Also, you aren't going to accidentally buy GMO seeds, they usually just say that so they don't have to answer questions. If you're buying GMO you have to sign contracts and are buying in bulk. It's for big farmers. They cost too much to sell in tiny packets to consumers and they don't want them handed out to everyone.

Actually, about a month ago, it was announced government approval for the first GMO seed to be sold directly to consumers via retail markets. I believe it's a purple tomato variety. I caught the info on the end of a radio news broadcast, so I don't know more. I wonder if the seed packets will be labeled bioenginered?

@classicrocklover5615 you are correct, it's just called The Purple Tomato. I haven't seen it for sale yet but it has been marketed to consumers.

Botanical Interests' packet art is a very big deal. They go to great lengths to make sure it's accurately depicting the plants. And also, yes, Berlin seeds has to be ordered by phone, email, or fax.

I'd wager bird seed would be a great source. I tossed some chicken scratch into a garden bed so they'd till and poop the bed, and the germination rate on those seeds was pretty solid. Seemed like anything they didn't devour sprouted.

This was awesome to watch. Really interesting! I probably get about ten catalogs every year. Johnny's has always been my go-to for most of my orders. I've always used Totally Tomatoes for my tomatoes and peppers. I only use Park or Burpee's for a specific flower which grows well in my climate. While I'm very happy with Johnny's, I'll check out MIGardener. Sounds interesting. Also, I believe that Botanical Interests changed ownership a couple of years ago and they are doing a lot of videos under Epic Gardening. Kind of sounds like what's happening with MIGardener stuff. I've checked out the former but not the latter. Epic Gardening has some great videos. I received the Baker's Creek catalog in the in the mail a few weeks ago. First time I've ever seen it. Wow. It's like porn for gardeners. And I'm only half way through it.

Funny that many say Non-GMO because those seeds are only sold commercially; just like promotion for chicken without hormones which has been banned in the US since the 1950's

I came here to say this. I've been told by someone very knowledgeable about the whole industry that it's actually illegal for companies to sell GMO seeds to home gardeners. The farmers that grow GMO seeds have to sign contracts with hefty fines for violating the terms. None of them are going to risk it to sell to people who aren't supposed to have them. They can't even save seeds for themselves for their next crops and have to repurchase each year. I wish more people knew this.

  • @NotSquareToPrepare

They kinda have to because so many still believe they can buy GMO seeds. A person in a gardening group refused to buy from Walmart or any big box store because she assumed they were GMO. We need to keep educating people.

I'm disappointed that you skipped the seed companies from other parts of the world. Just because a company isn't in the US, doesn't mean they don't have interesting seeds or that the shipping is crazy expensive. I think Nikitovka Seeds from Ukraine does free shipping to anywhere in the world, and they have varieties that you don't see in American seed shops, especially tomatoes and cucumbers.

All seed consumers can buy are Non GMO. You have to be a large farm or corporation to get GMO seeds. So you can't accidentally buy GMO seeds.
