It facinates me to see our Australian native birds being bred and loved in the USA and all over the world. I have had Aussie birds all my life and my father bred Budgie Mutations on a commercial scale back in 1955. Love and regards to you all or Y'all I believe!

Hello Mate, People in the southern states say Y'all ... It's not something that's said on the west coast where we are. We don't have any accent in Oregon (she said tongue-in-cheek, smile). In 1955 my grandfather was raising Budgies over here too. I was nine and had an aviary in Calif. we'd started the year before when I was 8. I've always loved birds of all kinds, but Bourke's are my favorites. I should note that in the USA it is against the law to raise native birds. Can't trap or keep anything native to the USA. So, our hookbills are domestically bred, but originally imported.

@@LuanWessels Wow, what a beautiful big flock you have! I specialize in Bourke's, with a few Splendids. Have have had many other varieties over my lifetime (I'm old). Your birds sound impressive. I've always wanted Galah's, also called Rose-breasted parrots over here. I think they are why I first loved Rosy Bourkes so much. At age 20 I saw a Galah hen, hand fed, that I really wanted, but she was too expensive for me to buy. If I had she might even still be alive and with me for a few more years. ;-)

I had a normal hand raised and feed . got him when he was about 4 months old. Brighteyes taught me a great bit about how intelligent and talkative they are. He would start conversations and follow mine . I was like this should be looked into by scientist more. He passed but he is still with me im my heart and that is one thing at 65yo still makes me cry when I think of it. Our first conversation. I have dentures and he seen them come out and I showed them to him in my mouth after I put them back in. as I drew him closer to my mouth with him on my finger I heard him say " NO EAT ME!" I pulled him back looked into his eye and said you talk? and he replied "YEA!" it begin a long 11 year friendship I miss. im listening to them talk about what yer doin and I heard one say my not you lol. they are so precious. Ae you in Nebraska area? that's where brighteyes came from . Got him in Ogden Utah.

We are in Oregon. Sorry you lost Brighteyes ... I recommend another Bourke or two. They are intuitive, loving and sweet. Best of luck.

When putting nest box’s up do you take two or three bars out of the cage?

It's three or four that we take out, depending on the size of the nest box opening.

Hello. Our Bourke's nest box holes are about two inches across, but size isn't very important. They could be bigger. Bourkes can use either a Budgie-sized box, or a larger Cockatiel-sized nest box.
