Exchanging Mozart for Mario Brothers | Rob Landes | TEDxSaltLakeCity
After unsuccessfully auditioning for four orchestras, classically trained violinist Rob Landes started to lose hope in his dream of a musical career. A loop pedal and a community of supportive video gamers changed everything. In a paradigm-shifting TEDxSaltLakeCity performance, Landes demonstrates that dreams can come true with a little tweaking, that listening to your mother always pays off, and that classical musicians also know how to rock. Featuring covers of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. Take a classically-trained violinist who began studying at the age of 3, add two music performance degrees, include a loop pedal and a dash of humor, and you have Rob Landes. Rob Landes has become a sensation on both KZread and Bilibili (China’s
most popular short-video platform) for his combination of video game music, pop music, comedy, and costumes. With over 1.6 Million subscribers worldwide and 160 million views online, Rob has delighted diverse audiences with hundreds of musical covers. As to his live performances, Rob Landes has opened for T-Pain, Rachel Platten, and Jason DeRulo, while also having performed at New York Fashion Week, Carnegie Hall, the Sundance Film Festival, throughout Europe, Northern Africa, Southeast Asia, and now TEDxSaltLakeCity! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It’s funny how he mentions losing at auditions for professional orchestras. Rice University has a low output of musicians who win jobs. Let alone maintain those jobs with orchestras around the nation. I’m sure there are plenty of them who win jobs with 52wk orchestras, but that’s a slim chance than none. But most of them just return to their hometowns in hopes of becoming the next big thing, but yet, no one wants them when they comeback unless you can absolutely knock it out the ballpark. Unfortunately, he had to turn to this to where it’s still a failure.
I have watched Rob Landes since years so proud to see him here at ted talks.Keep up the good work RoB!!!!!

Wow that must have been difficult! Once u figure out the intervals of the strings of your own instrument, it can be hard to play those same pieces on an instrument with different string intervals. I play cello too and you just play it down a string and change one of the fingerings but it’s almost the same. Viola is even easier because you only go down a string and don’t have to change fingerings except shifting up on the A string. But I still haven’t gotten the hang of guitar. Nice work👍🏻🤗

That Hallelujah was amazing ❤️❤️
I never cared for the Violin, mostly cause I just never heard it anywhere and didn’t think much of it. But after witnessing what this guy can do I’m amazed by this instrument 🎻
As long as he did what his mother asked ("Hallelujah"), he got to play his game (AC DC)... It's sweet to see that some things never change.
I guess I have been watching a load of Rob's videos. This pop up on my recommendation and am glad it did. He killed it. 🔥
