Excel: How to add a 2nd Axis to a Chart - Reservoir Elevation-Area-Storage Capacity Curves

How can I add a second horizontal axis to an Excel chart? In this video we will build the elevation-area-storage capacity chart for the Kajaki reservoir, Afghanistan with the reservoir area in hectares shown on the secondary horizontal axis in reverse order. We will use data from a survey carried out in 1968 by the USGS. I will take you step-by-step through the processing of the original data to the final chart.
Chapters:
00:00 Introduction
00:44 Format data as Table
01:43 Create chart
02:17 Swapping data from x to y axis - Method 1
02:53 Swapping data from x to y axis - Method 2
03:25 Add Secondary Horizontal Axis
04:19 Format the Axis labels
04:50 Add Axis Titles
05:30 Add Chart Title & Line up gridlines
05:51 Move the chart & do final edits
07:23 Final remarks

Is there a way to add an indicator line across the chart saying this is top of reservoir or showing something like a max fill line?

Hi JS, yes, it is possible & quite simple to do. In my video on Reservoir Storage Monitoring (kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYZ91JedlNC9f7w.html), I include an update of the file used in this video which contains a dotted line showing the spillway. You can get it from: bit.ly/3Hbo6QX Have a look at the Chart sheet. It gets the spillway data from the Info sheet. All the best, Andreas

how can we find reservoir dimensions?I mean the height, width and length of a dam?

  • @GeosearchInternational

Normally this is something you should get from the dam design report. You can check the width/length of the dam from satellite images, but the height is more tricky. All the best, Andreas

@@GeosearchInternational I have gone through a formula "Dicken formula" which is utilized for check dams weir length based upon discharge of a catchment area at a particular point. But I am not sure whether it is practically executable or not because length as you say depends upon the location where dams need to be constructed.

@@GeosearchInternational I am asking about constructing a new dam at a particular site. How we can design it. Like its width and height and length. Is it based upon the active pressure or uplift pressure? If you find any helpful material, kindly share its link here so that I may be able to find solution to my problem. I have been searching for so many days on KZread as You know research papers take much time to read.

@comparingthelegends1046, unless you are a qualified dam engineer, you should not attempt to design any dams, even if it is just a "check dam". All dams retain water, and if you get the dimensions or the design wrong, there is a risk that the dam fails and suddenly a large volume of water rushes downstream which can endanger life and property. Another issue to consider is the large negative effect many dams have on the water balance of river basins, especially in arid areas. Have a look at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJWGk6ymY6vdk9Y.html All the best, Andreas
