Example Phonics Lessons for K, 1st, & 2nd
Reading lesson plans can sometimes give you the gist of what a lesson will look like... but actually SEEING 👀 someone teach the lesson?! That's super helpful! In this Facebook Live video, I provide a sample lesson of not one, not two, but THREE phonics lessons!
⭐ Kindergarten - sample phonics lesson about teaching/reviewing letters, high frequency words, picture sort, and an independent game
⭐ 1st grade - sample phonics lesson about teaching the consonant digraph "ch," blending activity, high frequency words, dictation, and a decodable text
⭐ 2nd grade - sample phonics lesson about teaching contractions, high frequency words, phonological awareness with syllables, and contraction construction

Love your lessons. Do you have suggestions for 3rd graders that need some additional reading support?
@learningattheprimarypond
2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Really, you can utilize any of the same tips/suggested resources as you'd use for 2nd grade students for the 3rd graders who may be struggling (because likely they are at a 2nd grade level anyways then!)
Hi, great learning!!!

Letter names, but this was 60 years ago- old school!
If, I remember we did both
I love the information that you present. Question? Do you ever do these lessons for preschool and toddlers?
@learningattheprimarypond

Hey! Normally, these would wait until closer to K4/K5. However, reading with kids and exposing them to letters and sounds at a younger age can be great!
I love
Please add timestamps to your videos. Great video, thank you

Do you recommend similar methods with adult students? Are there books for teaching adults phonics? Or books to use to teach English language from scratch?

Hi Henriette! What an awesome question. This might be a good blog to read through: learningattheprimarypond.com/blog/best-practices-in-phonics-instruction-for-kindergarten-first-second-grade/ Even with adults, I think following a system is key! Also, a diagnostic assessment like this free one (www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Free-Phonics-Diagnostic-Assessment-7565061) could be helpful in quickly determining strengths/areas of growth!
I teach 2nd grade but I have students that still do not know all letters and letter sounds. What would you suggest; Should I focus on your 2nd grade lessons, 1st grade or Kinder?
@learningattheprimarypond
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tiffany! Knowing all letters/letter sounds is definitely the basis for other phonics instruction. For whole group, I'd still do 2nd grade lessons so that students are exposed to grade level material. But for small group instruction, I'd definitely match your students' needs and use K or 1st grade lessons!

Amazing
This is great! I heard from another SOR YT that letters don't make sounds, rather they spell/represent sounds. Any thoughts on this idea? TFS

Good question! I think it depends if you're talking about oral or visual. For instance, if you're just saying "b" makes the sound /b/ versus students actually seeing it on paper, then you could say "represent."
