Examining Heifers with the new Arrowquip Chute
Calving is in full effect, but we take this day to vaccinate our heifers against Brucellosis. We got to use the new Arrowquip chute!
Welcome to Sonne Farms! On this channel we showcase numerous jobs a Corn/Soybean/Beef producing operation takes on each day. Hop in the cab or sorting alley with Cole, Brian, and Jeff, to see how life really is for the people that help feed the US and the rest of the world. In addition to Corn, Soy, and Cattle, Sonne Farms puts up grass and alfalfa and sells pure bred Black Angus Bulls in South Dakota.

Trying to catch up on your old videos,was always nervous round cattle,now can work along side you....from the comfort of my armchair!Thank you.
love the Arrowquip chute , (we would call it a cattle crush )as for Brucellosis the cattle are tested every year by a vet and if one has it , it has to culled , I let our cattle out on spring grass yesterday and they loved it , but still feeding silage as well pics on my page
Your dad is hilarious! My dad passed away years ago. I miss him everyday.
I enjoy your videos so much. I always get a good giggle from both of you. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.

The arrowquipe chute looked like it worked really well . I think the more you use it more efficient it is. Im sure the young lady who demonstrated you the arrowquipe at NFMS was also a contributing factor to test it on your farm 😊
I just discovered I really like the sound of cows walking through snowy mud!
I have been eyeing one of those chutes for a couple years now. They look sweet!

I love your channel
I would find a local sawmill and buy some lumber and slabs, on the sides, to build some calf shelters... Fill the shelters with hay or straw ... Use a water sealer on everything before it’s built, especially the cut ends, to make the shelters last longer.. use tin over the tops... I would make a few for the just the calfs as well as a few for the moms... the better shelter they have the better they will be... Sawmills usually have mismatched boards too... build in lift supports for the forks or put in two eye bolts to use a chain to move them.. screw a pallet to 4x4’s on the under side of the shed?
Man that sloppiness! Vodka dad, trust him 😂

Cole, I am new to your channel, currently subscribing to 8 farming videos, incl yours. Just want to say how much I enjoy your videos. They are well done, I learn a lot. While our extended family is not new to farming, several uncles owning various farms, I was raised in the city. Worked in the aerospace industry for 40 years. We recently built our new retirement home on 300 acres we own with our son and his family. Our son farms. Check out Little Fork Ranch in Greenwood, British Columbia, website and Instagram. We bought 8 angus cows and now waiting for our first 6 heifers to calf this spring. Hence one of the reason I enjoy your videos so much. Keep up the great work you are doing. You and others are doing a great service explaining farming to the vast majority of us who, in essence, have taken farming for granted. You and your family are in our prayers, Wishing you the best. W

Welcome to South Dakota where it goes and snows then rains then does it again.
Tip I’ve used to draft a calf onto another cow. Take 20cc penicillin and put down left nostril, 20 down right, 20 down her mouth. Then put 20cc on the back of the calf. It’s worked every time for me. Beats the hell out of skinning the dead one or fighting them for weeks.

Sonne Farms I know, sounds like I’m trying to get you to kill a cow. At least that’s what I thought until I saw someone do it and then tried it
Amazing how these calves can be born out in the weather. Seems like they're always my healthiest beef calves when they're born outside. Can you do a video on the shoot that you have on the farm compared to the new cattle chute. And all the new upgrades. We're still using Farm Gates drives me nuts but it gets the job done. Thanks for the video have a great evening

Do you have a feedlot as well as a cow/calf operation? Also how many head do you guys run?
There is still brucellosis in elk and buffalo herds in Wyoming and Montana. So you have to vaccinate. We also bleed every year to check to see if our cattle are infected
@SonneFarms
4 жыл бұрын
Yea I am sure with wild animals it can be an issue, by "bleed" do you mean collect samples to test?

hi jeff!
I like the *sound* of "Rum & Dew" but not sure how it would taste?
So we are not the only ones that use equipment as temperary fencing
The Arnold voice🤣
If I win the tractor I will bring it back to the farm I want to see you guys succeed more than a couple bucks
what mixes with Dew is Canadian Mist
you guys go out & buy that new chute or are they letting you demo it for some exposure thru your channel? with the amount of cattle you guys run I'd think you'd be using a silencer...
What do your replacements weigh?
Brucellosis used to be a big deal with the bison in Yellowstone NP. I think it's still there.
@SC-sf8xt
4 жыл бұрын
Same in wood buffalo park in northern alberta . Not so much in the herds but they say it can last in the soil for decades
Mix the dew and peppermint schnapps and you’ll get a drink that tastes like tooth paste, good if you like drinking toothpaste.
How bout Creme de Menthe and Mt Dew,? At least they are both green!!! LOL
what was the number of heifers ready to breed next season and how many were not big enough - are you just going to wait on them and look at their birth dates/months or are they being sold on

There were about 6 out of over 70 that didn't measure up. We cut their tags out so we can differentiate.

Good idea!
Nothing wears ya down like walking/running all day in mud, make sure ye have a cooshy job next day.
About 12 corral panels coulda saved all that time moving equipment to make a fence 🤣 or get some rebar and snow fence works just as good and cheaper
Cow VS. Heifers??? Difference just if they have had a calf before vs 1st time? Or no?
@SonneFarms
4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much!
Use WD 40 on cow and calf. Spray calf down really well, spray up cows nose while in calving pen. 8 out of 10 works. Spray well, don’t hold back...
You going to rent or buy arrowquip chute
