Exactly How I Got My First Book Published // Gillian Perkins

I completely forgot to mention how much I earn from book sales! (Oops!) My book sells for $14.99 on Amazon. For every sale, I earn about $6.00, the publishers get about $4.00, and Amazon gets about $5.00.
(And just in case you're wondering, $6.00 per sale is actually a lot more than many authors get from traditional publishing deals.)
There's also an ebook version of my book, which sells for $7.00. I get about $3.50 for each ebook sale.
Free checklist for successfully marketing your first book: www.gillianper...
Here's the video about how I wrote my first book in 30 days: • How I Wrote a Book in ...
In this video I cover exactly how I got my first book published at age 21. This is the process that I'd recommend to any new author who wants to get published.
What's better, self-publishing or traditional publishing? They each have their pros and cons, but self-publishing gives you a lot more creative opportunities, allows you to directly control the success of your book, and generally is more profitable for the author.
Wondering how to get self-published? I used a service called Create Space (www.createspac...), an Amazon partner company. They publish books "print on demand" style, which is a MUCH more affordable way to get published.

Thank you for this video! It was really encouraging! I remember when I first looked into being a writer in college, and it was exactly like that - you aren't a "real" writer if you aren't published by the publishing houses and to get published by them was extraordinarily difficult. But now, it seems like a brave new world for writers, especially considering writing books and magazine articles (and other published print) is not the only way to make a living as a writer anymore.

The book I have wanted to write all my life is done, having started with some short stories and poetry. I like the process you describe, but what are the copyright safeguards? What is to prevent whoever gets your book from putting their name on it? That's my biggest worry.

Gillian, may I just give you one suggestion? Yes, you are right: it doesn't cost you any money to self-publish your book except buying the proof copies, but I think you missed out the other caveat which is the essential job of making a good book-cover which can cost at least $10.00 to buy the licence for an image. As you know, people do judge a book by its cover and a good book-cover is half the marketing.

Gillian, great video! I just finished writing a book about my life story! I have been told for years that I should write a book because of what I went through in my life. There is a publisher that read ten pages and asked me to send them a manuscript which I did yesterday. I would love to self publish it. After a few people started reading it they said it was such an amazing read that I need to be careful who I send this too. The only reason I would consider a Publisher is because of the ability they have to promote the book. If you wrote a book that you believed could sell a million copies would you still self-publish?

All I know is that if I'm writing it, it definitely won't be a children's book since for some reason, whatever I try, I always end up including some... Sensitive topics (like abuse) and then also violence.

Is there a difference between using CreateSpace and directly create an account on Amazon Kindle? Which one is better for first time author? 2. Can you elaborate more on upfront marketing? I am writing for the english audiences (I am from Asia) so am wondering how to go about this. 3. If I plan to not reveal my face and much info about myself as part of the "brand" (fiction that fits the mysterious theme), is that.. good from the marketing POV? Really appreciate your input on these. Thank you and have a good day.

When you talk about no costs up front, does that mean that you did all edits and cover design by yourself? I know that those can have a huge impact on the cost of self-publishing (reaching into a couple thousand dollars) so I guess my question is: how polished and ready-to-go was your book before you started Createspace, and did they charge you for edits and cover design, or did you already have those ready to go?

They are selling it for 22.99 sometimes you can find it even with a different price, More expensive. I have been fighting with the publisher about the price, they don't do anything to lower it, so I'm getting complaints with readers about the price, it's a children's book. • @livertine504
    @livertine5045 жыл бұрын

I mean it's definitely a good way but on the other hand you still need to spend quite a lot of money before putting your book on a platform to actually sell it. I mean you at least need two other individuals you need to pay them for to take a closer look at your book: A reader (lector/ editorial report - I don't know how it is called in English) and a proofreading - because especially if it is your first book it can't be perfect in every way without letting others with knowledge take a closer professional look at it. I don't know how it is within the US or England etc. but in Austria / Germany this costs around 500$ each and then you also need to have a eye catching cover. If you're really good at Art you can do it on your own or pay someones work you can use which also would be around 200-300$ - You definitely need some money on the side to afford this step in your life.

May 26, 2018---Thanks for the info/video. Found myself reading a lot of stories on a prepper/survivalist website about 5-6 years ago and made a negative comment on one of them. I said anyone notice how in these stories EVERYONE is either prepared for end of the world OR they some how find a cache of weapons, food, etc. which enables them to survive AND no good guy/woman ever seems to die? Got a lot of feedback on that one, with everyone saying, hey, these people put a lot of time & effort into their stories and if you think you can do better, go for it. I did. I put a different spin/perspective from the book One Second After by William Forstchen. It's about a truck driver in his late 50's finding himself in Portland, Oregon when the emp hits, among other things. The story is based on what I know, can do and actually own/have with me either at home or while on the road. Had it on that website for about 2 years before someone complained and the entire story was yanked due to foul language and vividly describing rape, murder, torture, etc. I found this kind of funny because this was a prepper/survivalist website and if something like this actually happened, what do they think would happen? At the time I had either 42K or 45K hits on it and because of my story, was suspended from the website for a week. Was offered other websites by the readers and found one I really liked. Was right up front about my story, saying this was NOT a story for kids to read. The last time I worked/submitted a chapter was in March 2016, with slightly over 20K in views. Haven't finished the story other than working on 2 chapters. On the same web site, the site owner came up with the idea of people being changed or as my main character calls it, being affected. Earth goes thru a solar dust cloud and then is hit with a solar flare from the sun, with some of those on airplanes being affected. Think of the tv series Hero's. I came up with 5 different people with 4 of them having different abilities. The 5th character is the wife of a man who was affected and how she's had to deal with this. Found myself writing more on one characters ability which as of April 2018, has had just over 11K in views. I'm still writing chapters on the main character, but have also started another story about a college age kid (I'm 65) who, along with his brother, were affected. This guy has the ability to disappear into or come out of any shadow. And if you're wondering, several of the authors on that website have had their books published (Amazon) though I think most of them are e-books.

I'm currently writing a book. it's complete with the exception of some minor things. I was signed by Tate Publishing and something happened. Now I was accepted by another publisher but it cost a lot. Give me some suggestions. It's 88000 words

You should not have to pay anybody to publish your book traditionally. Run!
