Exactly How I Get Perfect Recall With All Dogs

Recall off leash with your dog or puppy is one of the hardest things to achieve when training your dog but it is so important as a dog can find themselves in multiple difficult situations and without perfect recall your dog can end up getting hurt so you should always thrive to make sure you are achieving perfect recall and in this video you can see how it can be achieved.

The first collar didn't have enough sensitivity in its adjustments and (despite having done the prep-training) would make her too anxious to be helpful. From feeling frustrated viewing these videos with an unruly Labrador puppy, to 4 months later having a fairly well behaved dog (always working towards improving) it’s really interesting. Time, dedication & consistency are the main things that make this a success, put that time and effort in and you’ll start to reap the rewards. It’s just so easy to forget that collar some days and say it’ll be alright, then your dog doesn’t listen to you and you get frustrated, mostly likely breaking tradition/ routine and deviating from training. Long line recall training was also a game changer, thank you for these videos

You hit the nail on the head. Most positive only enthusiasts that I’ve met are so adversarial, yet it is the balanced handlers such as us who take an approach that is in the very best interests of our animals’ welfare. As you addressed, many dogs can be trained using positive only methods with great success. Yet, for many - especially those with dogs of working lineage or general high-drive - fair corrections are crucial to success. These are fair because the dog is conditioned to understand the corrections, of which are in proportion to the level of disobedience in that scenario. Otherwise, do the positive-only trainers suggest that a head-strong dog lives it’s entire life on long lines, surely this is more harmful to an animal’s welfare?

It's all about creating "loving leadership" at every stage home, outside of house etc that means perfect leave it and and perfect recall. If your dog doesn't walk properly the lead, doesn't respect you at home, doesn't get sufficient amount of exercise and doesn't have right boundaries don't expect great recall.

I really appreciate your videos. I wish we could come work with you. We are long time dog people, doing dog rescue and raising service and therapy dogs. We have a recent rescue our daughter fell in love with and we kept. He's come a long way in the four months we've had him, except one thing. He is VERY obsessive and aggressive with our livestock. It's gotten worse rather than better and he killed one of our sheep and seriously maimed another a few days ago. I am not familiar with how to use an E collar, though our local trainer told us to put it on him and just allow him to wear it for a couple weeks before beginning to work with him. I'm feeling sad that we may have to have him put down if we can't over come this serious issue. We live out in the country and our neighbors have cows. If he was to get into their field and chase the cows, it could be disastrous. I refer all our puppy clients to your puppy video series.

The key is to be able to read your dog's bodylanguage very well. And to aply it the moment the dog starts with the unwanted behaviour or even when he starts thinking about it imho. But if you are not sure what you are doing it could be a very bad tool for the dog and your relationship with it. You can easily inflict anxiety or crush his confidence. So be very sure you know what to do and when, before applying an e-collar. In my opinion you only need an e-collar if the dog has done the behaviour for so long you can't snap him out of it, or it goes from 0 to 100 in seconds. Otherwise a normal correctiong would do the trick.. So the question I would have is why do you think your dog would be perfect for e-coller training? What is it that makes you say that? Sorry for any misspelling, not my native language.

@@santos9979 I believe those e-collars come with substantial instructions, and actually one can research to get a better understanding before ordering one. I believe this dog trainer mentioned the word sensation and that’s what I don’t like. Sensations to a dog collar means a shock whether it’s mild or higher and I couldn’t do that to my dogs. I will never walk any of my dogs without a lead because by nature dogs are very unpredictable. I have six dogs with enough space on the property to roam, and yes, where they roam is completely fenced in. I understand most people can’t afford that, but even if one has like an acre you can always make sure the pets are safe, to a degree of course.

She is very energetic and uses a wheelchair due to an accident she suffered at a very young age. Even though you would think because of her disability she would be scared and slow, she is actually the one that wants to go at the front no matter what. When I walk with her alone she walks perfectly by my side. But when her sisters are around it gets absolutely impossible to control. She clearly starts competing with the others. And then we moved... To a more rural area... After some time we let him off the leash, making sure to always have high value snacks on us. First weeks were great. And then something changed. I can't tell what exactly it was. But he must have smelled something so fucking fantastic that he absolutely wouldn't come back. I chased him through the woods and fields in knee deep snow for about half an hour. And since that moment he seems to doesn't WANT to know the recall anymore. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times he ignores me with almost a smug grin. We want to buy a e collar ourselves and with that to completely learn the recall from scratch. Do you think there is any hope?

He has to earn that freedom off leash in the new location. Be sure your informal recall during every day means what you want it to. Like when I say C'mere, it just means come within eyesight of me, just need to see your face. But when I say Dog's name, Come in a high pitched voice, it's an emergency and they need to come directly to me - close enough to grab their collar, the truck is coming the first time you say the command. Only ever say it one time. To practice this I do not practice more than 3 times/day and ALWAYS have a high level treat - roast beef , filet mignon, liverwurst and make it last - like fine dining, you want them to savor it - three to five tiny pieces. This is because when you need to use the emergency recall, you won't actually have the high level treat, but because you've practiced every single time with them, the dog comes flying! Leslie Nelson 's Tails you win is how I teach it in my classes. Works like a charm, especially with a lot of countries outlawing shock/ecollars. The other thing you can do is either run away from the dog and/or fall down, start crying - something the dog doesn't expect so you become more interesting. Don't let them rehearse running off by not allowing them off leash until they're ready. Also, every single time you call them, the leash doesn't go on and you leave. Sometimes, you give them their high level treats and say, ok - go play! In fact, just get the dog rather than call them when it's time to leave. Otherwise it might become a game of keep away which can be very dangerous. Long lines if you need to follow through so the dog actually listens every time. Again, do not overuse that emergency recall.

I also Never call my dogs to me to do something they don't like - a toe nail trim, a bath, etc. When we practice obedience, if the dog anticipates and starts coming before I call them, I don't say anything, don't sigh, etc. We just go back to the location we started from and maybe go half the distance or go back and reward the wait, etc. Coming to you should be the best possible thing EVER! If you come home and the dog just ate your couch, if you call them to come to you, you have to praise them for coming.

My question is is there a behavioural or other reason that he won't play tug of war with me? 😅 I know he's only young but they have been playing tug of war together for 2 weeks constantly so he knows how to do it! We have a great relationship, he chews toys when I hold them for him but as soon as I put a little pressure against it he lets go. I'm vocally encouraging playfulness, so he shouldn't think I'm asking him to drop (which he does do brilliantly). Any thoughts? Thanks! ☺️

Can I ask why you SLOWLY dial up the levels when the dog ignores you when fully trained on the e-collar? Other trainers like Ivan Balanbanov or Jamie Penrith don’t dial up slowly because they say it builds resistance to higher levels, i.e. the dog thinks it can push through one more, one more, one more… So their preference is to jump to a much higher level straight away which the dog will want to avoid in future, and strengthen the response to the original command (voice or whistle). Why do you suggest slowly dialling up? Thank you!

  • @sophies5961

By building slowly (1-5 at a time per ignore of the command) to find the lowest level at which they respond. Higher distraction will have higher levels required. My dog is usually around a 15 out of 100 but sometimes (like in a store or if another dog wants to play) higher levels are needed. The ecollar isn't a punchishment. It doesn't need to be very high for them to understand

My understanding regarding dialing up is during the learning phase when you're finding out what levels your dog responds to under certain situations. After you find their levels (working and corrective), you can gauge where to jump to thereafter.

I really feel sorry for the people who say that they couldn't use shock(even tho it's more a stimulation/sensation) does that also mean that they don't use any correction like leash or verbal inflection, you could also say that is a shock to the dog... there is sooo much misinformation from the purely positive peeps out there... I watched a guy trying to lure his dog with food from 50 paces when the dog was in the middle of continuously snaping at other dogs(it was def too ruff an the other dogs were blatantly not enjoying it and trying to avoid him but he kept at it. You could see the anxiety in his eyes an how all over the place the poor dog was)... how is that dog ever going to learn that that isn't OK behaviour?🤷‍♂️ it beggars belief.. the poor dog just needed direction, an would def appreciated it.lol it would be an amazing dog to work if the owner had the skills... once the dog done it to my puppy I asked him "are you not thinking of correcting that behaviour?" ... he went into some rambling rant about cruelty an some other nonsense, he made about as much sense as the local alcoholic on pay day.. he looked baffled when I asked him "does that not sound counter intuitive, but not in clever way" ...its the dog I feel sorry for... and I spose the guy aswell coz he'll never experience the sort of relationship with his dog that people who understand this, blatantly obvious, intuitive method of training.😢

These “how to” videos always make things look easy…. When they aren’t in practise. My opinion and experience.

@Firenze009 ecollars can be a very great tool for dogs who need a little more direction than basic lead pressure (and off leash training) but I do wish they were more regulated and harder to get because they very much can be used incorrectly and even full on abusive in the wrong hands. But they don't need to be illegal

@@ellise02 I just feel like tools like these, and same goes for prong collars etc., are abused a lot by people who don't want to put the effort into properly training their dog. They have a dog they can't control, they find it annoying and opt for the easy way out and on top of that might not be aware how to use these tools properIy. I don't neccessarily have anything against a mild sensation that a dog might feel, but to enforce wanted behaviour through actual pain and fear is just wrong imho. It's just my 2 cents. I feel like there are better ways to go about it :)

@@sophies5961 Yeah i get what you mean :) but for those exact reasons i myself am totally fine with them being illegal over here. I have a very excitable golden retriever who was an insane puller. Through lots of hours of training, every single walk, I managed to teach him that pulling is not accepted. He now walks pretty nicely on a loose leash, although it's still a work in progress. It for sure takes a lot of dedication, but I'm happy I managed to do it with just his normal leash and harnass. It feels more fair to him too, he's just a happy and energetic pupper :)

This was the least informative video I have ever seen from you guys. "Want perfect recall? Buy an e-collar." Doesn't say how to train with it, didn't even give a link to the product in the description. I like Fenrir and they're usually very informative in their videos and offer realistic and humane suggestions for canine behavior modifications but this one struck out.
