Wonderful performance. My favorite romantic work for brass quintet. I first performed this in 1969.

I had this on a Music Minus One record 50+ years ago when I was a senior in high school. My dad, who was a band director at another school, let me use an Eb alto horn to play along with the French Horn part. The 2nd movement was always my favorite; I always heard it as someone waking up to a beautiful spring morning and then suddenly realizing they had overslept and had to rush to get to work, then settling down at their desk for the day. The music we learn in our youth gets written deep in our brain and we never forget it. I was pleased, and not surprised, that there is this lovely recording on KZread that I found on the first try by just entering "Victor Ewald." I can still sing along with every note. I'm not sure what I was doing just now that brought this memory back. Thanks for the trip down the rabbit hole.. 💗

Haha, I remember the old Music Minus One records. I was a sr in 1974, so we aren't very far apart in age. Here's a great joke: what the no. 1 ranked recording of the Telemann Viola Concerto? Why, it's the Music Minus One recording!

Fun memory... Thanks for sharing. The original scores were written for equal instruments, all Saxhorns. From top to bottom they were 2 Bb cornets, Eb peck horn, Bb baritone, Eb bass tuba. It has been rescored for more modern instrumentation. I'd love to hear this piece played with equal Saxhorns.

I was first playing this in faculty quintet at my local university back in 1978 or so, but it still rings through as solid composition with an excellent performance here. You guys are so clean you practically sound British! :)

Gorgeous rendition! It may be more comfortable for the trombone part to be played on a euphonium, but it's not a trombone and the sound is different. I prefer the trombone for for this piece.

I love this piece. Apparently I played another version. My horn part was more involved--it covered more of the melody.

I'm a horn player, and I've sat in 3 different positions: where the hornist is in this video, the trombone seat, and the trumpet to the left. Myvkeast favorite spot was where the trumpet is, but that's where the group leader wanted me.
