The sound of the racquet hitting the ball is SO satisfying. It feels so clean, almost as if every shot is right on the sweetspot

Right at the end just after Evonne breaks down about her father Kenny’s death you will notice a kindly caring hand caressing her head and that hand belongs to the most beautiful person in women’s tennis Martina and they have always been firm friends

A rare treat to see these two across the net. And people forget that Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova played doubles together in this tournament, getting to the final. Later that year, they would team up again at the Family Circle Cup. Cheers.

Evonne was always my favorite player because she was poetry in motion. A true lady & a great role model & champion. She's 6 months younger than my wife & I. And she had her first Child Kelly as we were having our Danielle. Thank for posting mon amie greetings from France 🇨🇵 Arnaud & Linda Montoya Bourbon Amaral 🌈🌎🙏💙🫶🤲🤗

Held at start of the season (moved to end/December 77-85, then back to January in 87, not held in 86, but held twice in 77). This was Martina's first grand slam final, she also made final of French right after this- losing to Chris in 3 sets. She defected at the US Open later this year.

Martina burst onto the scene using that Spaulding Speedshaft racquet. And Evonne was using her trusty, classic Dunlop Maxply Fort here. The one and only cat I ever owned I named “Evonne Goolagong Kelly” despite the fact I was a huge Evert fan. I still miss that kitty.

Finally some footage of the two champions playing each other and not of them playing Evert. Worth noting that Martina upset Margaret Court in the quarters here and Margaret returned the favor at Wimbledon later in the English summer. They each beat one another at the opponent's best major. I think Martina had the final 1975 major word versus Margaret in the QF at the US Open.

Kudos for your outstanding Grand Slam stats on the Court/Navratilova rivalry. They actually played doubles together in this tournament, getting to the finals. Later that spring, Billie Jean decided she didn't want to play singles at the Family Circle Cup, demanding that she only be allowed to play doubles with Martina. The Powers That Be would not allow her to do that, and so Court stepped in to team up with Navratilova for a second time (they lost to Goolagong/Wade in the SF). I I believe Court also beat Martina in mixed doubles at a major, but I can't remember where or when. Cheers.

Martina's game was like a diamond in the rough at this stage, hers almost prehistoric compared to Evonne's elegant shots and movement. It's a sight to watch Evonne during this time, but it's quite noticeable how Martina's game improved within the next few years. Coupled with Margaret Court, Goolagong and her pretty much bagged the Australian Opens during that time

When the title has "EXTENDED highlights" in it, it means that someone was too lazy to make highlights so they just chose a part of the match and published it.

Goolagong, King, Court, then later Navratilova and Mandlikova. I miss this kind of tennis. I wonder if Chris had never come in and started to dominate with the two-handed backhand, would today's game still resemble one with more one-handed backhands and serve and volley players? If not for Chris, there would be no Tracy Austin or Andrea Jaeger and practically no other modern player. Same on the men's side with Connors and Borg.

@@robertwebb3546 Not so, Robert... that is the Spalding open throated wood speedshaft that was quite popular at the time - Rosie Casals played that same frame. The first spalding metal frame that was used, to my knowledge, was the Spalding Smasher, Richard Gonzales' frame.

The Australian open was very much the poor relation of the grand slams back then and often attracted very weak fields (it didn't get a full 128 draw until 1988). Part of the reason was scheduling - it was held in December back then and many players didn't want to make the long journey for christmas. Another reason was money - Martina Navratilova said recently that she barely made enough here to cover her air fares.
