The sound of the racquet hitting the ball is SO satisfying. It feels so clean, almost as if every shot is right on the sweetspot
Right at the end just after Evonne breaks down about her father Kenny’s death you will notice a kindly caring hand caressing her head and that hand belongs to the most beautiful person in women’s tennis Martina and they have always been firm friends
What a player Goolagong was. What an unbelievable talent. So fluid, so good at opening the court. Really amazing.
Evonne really knew how to move the ball around the court. Great touch and elegant shot production. Those slice approaches are sublime.
Thank you Australian Open can you please post the full match! Please post more Evonne Goolagong Australian Open finals!
Thank you so much for uploading this treasure. "Our Martina from Czechoslovakia" against the most elegant tennis player in history, Evonne Goolagong. Did you notice how Martina caressed the emotional Evonne at the end? So many beautiful images in one short clip...

Over the recent death of her Father Kenny Goolagong
Wow, what a treat. Thank you for posting! The 1974 final between Evert and Goolagong would be amazing to see also, if you happen to have it.

A rare treat to see these two across the net. And people forget that Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova played doubles together in this tournament, getting to the final. Later that year, they would team up again at the Family Circle Cup. Cheers.

And now Margaret Court Smith is a devout Christian who speaks badly of gays and lesbians. Could she and Martina Navratilova be more opposite?
Evonne was always my favorite player because she was poetry in motion. A true lady & a great role model & champion. She's 6 months younger than my wife & I. And she had her first Child Kelly as we were having our Danielle. Thank for posting mon amie greetings from France 🇨🇵 Arnaud & Linda Montoya Bourbon Amaral 🌈🌎🙏💙🫶🤲🤗
Need to bring back some of these dresses!
Love the picture quality!
What gorgeous strokes from Goolagong…and was there some kerchief “thing” happening in ‘75? Finally, Martina’s dress is lovely.

I think the kerchiefs were for the heat.
Wow Martina eventually improved so much from this particular level
Held at start of the season (moved to end/December 77-85, then back to January in 87, not held in 86, but held twice in 77). This was Martina's first grand slam final, she also made final of French right after this- losing to Chris in 3 sets. She defected at the US Open later this year.
The 70's crowd really like their bucket hats.
Martina's outfit here, Smashing!

70s style for sure. Looks like she's ready to work a shift at Hot Dog on a Stick right afterwards. Love it!

I do like these older outfits they wore. I wonder if Martina, Chris and Tracy kept them? Some were one of a kind by Ted Tindling (did I spell his name right?)
does anyone have the 74 final with evonne against chris evert?
Thank you. This is a treat😊❤🎉
Evonne’s compliment for Mr edwards calling him a father figure so soon after losing her father - Martina is all tough on the outside and all heart on the inside . Love both wonderful Ladies , Martina and Evonne .

6 months later she fired his ass as he actually had the hide to forbid evonne from marrying roger Cawley. When he talked her mom into letting evonne move to Sydney with him ,he also talked the mom into signing over guardianship to him . I'd love to know if he stole any of her money
Incredible. Have you complete match ?

Parasite!
Evonne was a very special talent. Incredible volleyer.
Martina burst onto the scene using that Spaulding Speedshaft racquet. And Evonne was using her trusty, classic Dunlop Maxply Fort here. The one and only cat I ever owned I named “Evonne Goolagong Kelly” despite the fact I was a huge Evert fan. I still miss that kitty.
Finally some footage of the two champions playing each other and not of them playing Evert. Worth noting that Martina upset Margaret Court in the quarters here and Margaret returned the favor at Wimbledon later in the English summer. They each beat one another at the opponent's best major. I think Martina had the final 1975 major word versus Margaret in the QF at the US Open.

oh yeah, sometimes on KZread it almost feels like '70s (and to some degree also first half of '80s) women tennis was all about somebody playing Evert.

Kudos for your outstanding Grand Slam stats on the Court/Navratilova rivalry. They actually played doubles together in this tournament, getting to the finals. Later that spring, Billie Jean decided she didn't want to play singles at the Family Circle Cup, demanding that she only be allowed to play doubles with Martina. The Powers That Be would not allow her to do that, and so Court stepped in to team up with Navratilova for a second time (they lost to Goolagong/Wade in the SF). I I believe Court also beat Martina in mixed doubles at a major, but I can't remember where or when. Cheers.
Evonne, what a tennis tallent. Loved watching her play.

Miss Goolagong is so elegant
Nice tan Martina had!
Martina was HOT back in the day.
Martina's game was like a diamond in the rough at this stage, hers almost prehistoric compared to Evonne's elegant shots and movement. It's a sight to watch Evonne during this time, but it's quite noticeable how Martina's game improved within the next few years. Coupled with Margaret Court, Goolagong and her pretty much bagged the Australian Opens during that time
When the title has "EXTENDED highlights" in it, it means that someone was too lazy to make highlights so they just chose a part of the match and published it.
At times the camera seems so far away!
Goolagong, King, Court, then later Navratilova and Mandlikova. I miss this kind of tennis. I wonder if Chris had never come in and started to dominate with the two-handed backhand, would today's game still resemble one with more one-handed backhands and serve and volley players? If not for Chris, there would be no Tracy Austin or Andrea Jaeger and practically no other modern player. Same on the men's side with Connors and Borg.
Thank you, beautiful... Ah, wood and natural gut - oh, that sound and the variety in play from these two mega-athletes... Gorgeous

@frankcarbo6622 Navratilova’s racquet is a metal Spalding frame.
@frankcarbo6622

@@robertwebb3546 Not so, Robert... that is the Spalding open throated wood speedshaft that was quite popular at the time - Rosie Casals played that same frame. The first spalding metal frame that was used, to my knowledge, was the Spalding Smasher, Richard Gonzales' frame.
The Australian open was very much the poor relation of the grand slams back then and often attracted very weak fields (it didn't get a full 128 draw until 1988). Part of the reason was scheduling - it was held in December back then and many players didn't want to make the long journey for christmas. Another reason was money - Martina Navratilova said recently that she barely made enough here to cover her air fares.
Did Martina come straight from her other job at Hot Dog on a Stick?
I wonder if any of these women saved these tennis outfits. I think they are great!
They were hitting the ball with decent pace, I feel like women's game actually got slower in the 80s
Sponsored by Marlboro lol that’s funny to see… we call em cowboy killers in the US
I like how they are dressed as airline hostesses
Stuffed animal for second place?
