    One of the most underrated metro systems in Europe. The way it covers the metro area and connects to other forms of transit is amazing

    I live in Rotterdam and I'm proud of the metrosystem we have here. It's really useful as I travel to school with line B from de Tochten to Alexander and then I take the train to CS. The metro covers a quit big area (Den Haag, Spijkenisse, Cappelle aan den IJssel and Hoek van Holland and much more). I hope it get's more extensions in the near future. One that's probaly going to happen with the planned constructions of Feyenoord city, Havenstad mh4, Boszoom is a new metroline between Kralingse zoom and Zuidplein (a circle line). This one will be extended later on again to Charlois and Merwevierhavens. And evantually ending at Marconiplein or Schiedam Centrum. Other extensions I would love to see are a new brench to Ridderkerk, extending line D to Hellevoetsluis and a new brench to Krimpen aan den IJssel.

    @@HiMyNameIsShitBye. Uh yeah. In the Netherlands students can use a student public transport subscription which you can travel with throughout all of the Netherlands. It's free and only costs you money if you don't achieve your diploma within 10 years. In the Netherlands we have NS who runs our railway network. Normally the ov chipcard only works to travel by bus, metro and tram throughout the whole country but with this subscription you can also use the train.

    Excellent video. I hadn't seen anyone make a network progression yet on the Rotterdam metro network and it's awesome to see it grow like this. Some minor corrections and pieces of input on the video: -> The routing of line E in The Hague isn't correct. You drew it going to the Hollands Spoor station rather then the Central Station. -> For future videos: More consistency with whether or not to mention, and how to mention line names could be helpful. -> "RandstadRail" isn't a line name by the way. It is the project name of the construction of the corridor Rotterdam Metro line E and The Hague tram lines 3, 4 and 34 operate on, and the formula under which they operate. -> As you displayed correctly but written incorrectly: Only line A heads to Hoek van Holland. Line B was only extended as far as Vlaardingen West.

    "Metro" in Rotterdam is not a full-fledge metro, so calling this system a metro is exaggerated/lie. This system does not meet the criteria of a metro - it is in collision with roads and its range covers the metropolitan region, and not the city itself as a typical metro. The system is called metro only because of prestige, and should be called "agglomeration rail", NOT "metro".

  • @Direction-North

    @Direction-North

    Agglomeration rail isn't a term I have heard before. I just call it whatever the agency uses, 'Metro' is the (marketing?) word they use. I'd personally call it a "tram" or "light rail" myself.

    @@Direction-North Hi. Thank you for your answer. I'm glad you also see that this is not a full-fledged metro. I think "premetro" would be the appropriate term as well, or "metropolitan rail" - i forgot before about it. Of course, everyone would still call this system a "metro", but I mean to clarify the formal name itself.

    @@pieterwatson611 You can't call it a premetro that term means trams going through tunnels under the city center to later convert it in to a full metro. These vehicles are definitely not trams. Lightrail is probaly better suited. The reason it is called a metro system is because it once started out as a full metro system with metro vehicles using power from third rail. They never intended to create sections of the network as lightrail but due to costs they were forced to build the extension of the east west line to Ommoord as an lightrail (sneltram in dutch). To not confuse things even more they decided to not market this section as sneltram but metro. And it is still a metro because the vehicles switch power sources from overhead power to third rail. And the vehicles are metro's. Because of lots of incidents with the metro's at crossroads they decided to never make any extension of the metro as sneltram again. That's why between 1984 after the branch to Zevenkamp up to 2006 when RandstadRail was opened up every extension of the metro like the north south line to Spijkenisse in 1985, east west line to Marconiplein in 1986, a branch to Capelle aan den IJssel in 1994, the extension of the by then named Caland line (former east west line) to Hoogvliet to connect to the Erasmus line (former north south line) and on to Spijkenisse in 2002 and the last extension to Nesselande in 2005 were all build as full metro. Lightrail only gained popularity again when RandstadRail was opened up in 2006. They used a former railway line from NS between Den Haag, Rotterdam and Zoetermeer (Hofpleinlijn en Zoetermeerstads lijn) to convert in to lightrail so the metro's from Rotterdam and trams from Den Haag could use it. The reason this lightrail section was much more populaire then it's predecessor in 1983/1984 was because of the high speed these vehicles could reach, the connection to the metro system in Rotterdam and the tramsystem in Den Haag through the Netkous (name for the semi metro section in Den Haag), multiple extra stations that were build to move much more people around the lines and the amount of crossroads. Only the Hofplein line has a couple of crossroads. Because of the lightrail sections and full metro system in Rotterdam I believe the network has been split in to two systems. The full metro system from Cappelle aan den IJssel to Spijkenisse and the north of Rotterdam to Spijkenisse. And then the Lightrail network from Den Haag to Melangthon weg, Hoek van Holland to Schiedam Nieuwland and Capelse brug to Ommoord and Zevenkamp. Even tho these are two different systems it's up to this day still one network. And that's why it's a metro system.

    @@jusssie010 Premetro is the best name for this system. The system is served by light vehicles and has tunnels in the centre. They don't have to be trams, just light vehicles, and in Rotterdam they are. It cannot be called a metro, because it is a regional system (metro is municipal, not regional), and it is collision with roads. No metro is collision and it is written in the definition, e.g. of Eurostat. The system in Rotterdam does not meet the technical or non-technical requirements for a metro, and it is not. I don't care about your own interpretation. You're trying to call something something it's not. In summary, it's a pre-metro, OR commuter rail, it's NOT a METRO at all. Even the E line is not a metro, because the metro is not intercity.
