After a lot of research, modeling, animation and editing work this video is finally here! I want to transform this type of video into a real format, it will be tiring, but at the same time it will be really interesting.
For the future of the channel I have quite a few ideas in mind and some support wouldn't hurt, so I leave you my Patreon page. For subscribers there are 3 types of subscriptions that you can make, each with various benefits!

I remind you that this video doesn't want to be a "Before the dinosaurs were much cooler". Absolutely not, this video was made to show the progress paleontology has made over the years. I probably missed some details, but please understand that all this work was done by one person. That said, thanks for the support!

I remember seeing that in the 80s. I think it might be better to say when that was definitive, as the 70s and 80s was a revolutionary time for paleontology, when dinosaurs were first being thought of as more an 'in between' for reptiles and birds then purely reptilian.

This video didn't use the JP T-rex's roar either.
For those who don't know, they were originally designed with 3 claws on each hand because a more complete skeleton wasn't discovered yet. So, they had to estimate based off other dinosaurs like the Allosaurus, which had 3 claws.

@catpoke9557
Жыл бұрын
@@Dragonstorm62190 Probably not, actually. Large ground based predators need camouflage, in general, to catch their prey. Dinosaurs are also able to see in full color, which makes it even more important for something that HUNTS dinosaurs to not have bright colors, unlike modern birds. Birds strike from above so camo isn't as important. They also usually hunt animals with limited color vision. Basically, bright colors are viable on small fast animals that can fly or hide under brush. It's not viable for large predators. Though herbivores of all sizes can be bright. Herbivores just need to be fast enough or strong enough to escape a predator. Camo is optional

I love how you can see the animal gets progressively more intimidating with time as its reconstructions became more accurate. I know a lot of people say modern reconstructions aren't scary but I honestly think the opposite is true for T. rex. I am sure some animals do get less scary with time, but T. rex went from a big lizard to a nightmare fueled terror bird.

Thank you for not using the JP T. rex in the 90s section lol. Jurassic Park did revolutionize Dinosaurs for a ton of people. But it still wasn't paleoart. This was a nice watch, seeing the way our perception of these animals changes throughout the years will never get old to me. Especially because it likely won't ever stop. I might have problems with the way dinosaurs are handled in pop culture. But i have deep respect for early paleoart. And speaking of. Well, like i said. Jurassic Park was accurate for its time, and revolutionized dinosaurs for a lot of people which i happened more now a days in dinosaur movies. Who are you speaking for exactly? I dont recal rex really having any distinct look before the movies came out, which quickly became THE look of the animal and the fact that most people today can recognize and likely name it speaks volumes to how iconic this look really is.
@genus.species3362
Жыл бұрын
Again, i'm not criticizing the jurassic park design. But it was not the definitive portrayal of the animal. You can even see pictures of other 90s depictions behind the 90s T. rex model. Which itself isn't the JP rex. Yes, it was iconic. But it wasn't the only or most up to date T. rex at the time.

@@genus.species3362 But it kinda was. Sure there were others versions. But none were nearly as popular and even these other versions nearly always drew inspiration from the Jurassic Park version. It always looked like an animal! Even the first one! What the hell makes the others less like an animal to you? They all look equally realistic. People like you are so pretentious and condescending! What does an animal have to have in order to resemble an animal? An animal can have exposed teeth, and animal can have a dragging tail, and animal can be lean with a big head, and an animal can have osteoderms. The only thing close to not being realistically animal-like is the shrink-wrapping on the 90s Rex, but that is easily fixable. Just remove the bone protrusions and it's realistic!
Took T rex 100 years to get its lips back after 1920s version lmao. Ironically the one thing that original derpier design got more right than nearly everything after it.

We actually added feathers to T. rex for a good reason. Basically we discovered that coelurosaurs were feathered animals, and at the time, every coelurosaur we were finding with integument had feathers. This changed after a bit of course with us discovering nothing but scales on tyrannosaurids. But at the time, it seemed feathers were universal for coelurosaurs. So our best bet, given that we were just guessing with T. rex, was to make it at least partially feathered.

You should do one for other dinosaurs if you haven’t already. I think seeing something like this for Spinosaurus and Velociraptor would be interesting.
It has been over 100 years since it was first discovered and the evolution from the 1st to the newest design, it has finally given us the conclusion on why it is called the Tyrant lizard King
The feathering patterns are one of the things that will take more time to fully understand. Gigantism cause the body to produce excess heat, requiring less insulation. This can be seen in elephants with their hair.

As a kid never thought about it, but in hindsight, how did they think, the tripod version would ever work? It had to bend over very far, just to eat. For starters. JP was an eye opener in that regard. But still own tripod style models from the 80's, nostalgia I guess. But nice that every update over the years tries to get a better picture of this magnificent animal.
I honesty think the latest reconstruction looks the most imposing.
That's my favorite dinosaur of all.

Wonderful video. I love your reconstructings. One little thing is that the 90s T rex is probably a little bit too skinny around the lower jaw. Gregory S. Paul's two running Tyrannosaurs do have proper jaw muscles.
With each decade it gets bigger, scarier, and mightier, that why we love T-Rex so much.

Absolutely beautiful work!
It's incredible to see how much perception have changed - In the early days of Paleontology, prehistoric animals were seen as antediluvian monsters, almost sort of a novelty with a retro touch. Nowadays, they're reconstructed much like true living animals. Even more impressive would be doing the same kind of video with some Dromaeosaurid, in nowadays' most up-to-date reconstructions they truly almost look like toothed birds with claws sticking out the wings and a longer tail. But yet, almost birds.
Here is a comparison of the most complete and sure estimates of three theropod dinosaurs and an unsure estimate of a larger Spinosaurus: Tyrannosaurus rex (FHMN PR 2081 - Sue) Length - 12.39 meters Height (hip) - 3.8 meters Total height - 4.32 metrs Weight - 10 tonnes Giganotosaurus carolinii (Mucpv-Ch1- holotype) Length- 12.57 meters Height (hip) - 3.5 meters Total height - 3.76 meters Weight - 7.8 tonnes Spinosaurus aegyptiacus (IPHG 1912 VIII IK - holotype) Length - 9.43 meters Height (hip) - 1.85 meters Total height - 2.74 meters Weight - 3.7 tonnes Spinosaurinae indet. As seen in the the earlier postures of T.rex, they were originally envisioned in the tripod posture, which is the standard posture of Godzilla (Gojira).
This is pretty good. But I have to point something out. The T. rex in the original 1925 version of The Lost World had a longer head that looked like a rounded triangle then one you had. That one should be in 1925 with the first one being 1900-1920. Other then that, this is a good list.
Imagine if all of these versions of the T. rex all met eachother
Rex from WDRA were really ahead of it's time
The 1990 Rex is very Greg Paul-esque!
What came up that made us ditch the feathered concept for the T rex? especially since it seems more and more likely that raptors definitely had feathers? Was something new found or realized?
