i think its like that because sonic never had any water levels or any water to run around in, because in places like metal harbor he dies instantly when he jumps in the water, so it isnt properly animated. oh and i thought it was funny too

Sonic's actually smart, he's not panicking or freaking out. That would make him drown faster, instead he minimizes the chances of fast drowning and he looks around if there's an exit or some bubbles

Personally, I believe that Colors had the creepiest drowning animation. Sonic LITERALLY starts struggling for air, up until his lungs give out and he loses his last breath.
