CARTOON EVOLUTION #18
To celebrate their 70th Anniversary, I take a look at the history and evolution of SNOOPY, CHARLIE BROWN and the entire PEANUTS gang, vibrantly melancholy creations of cartoonist Charles M Schulz.
First published in American newspapers in 1950, spawning from an earlier strip - Li’l Folks, the Peanuts comic strip exploded into the world-wide spotlight in the middle-60s with tens of millions of readers, spawning a mass merchandising craze and an expansive multi-media franchise, consisting of over 50 specials, films and television series and numerous stage productions. In its wake, Peanuts has left an enormous impact on popular and social culture, with TV Guide calling the specials “the greatest TV cartoons of all time.”
I trace the entire history of Schulz’s strip and its translation into the cartoon medium - spotlighting changes made to narrative presentation and visual design over the last seven decades.
Good grief, it's a CARTOON EVOLUTION, Charlie Brown. Here's my look at PEANUTS through the years!

I once read a "Star Trek the Next Generation" novel (I don't remember the name of it.) that had some dialogue that went something like this: after having lost a minor battle, Riker says to his sergeant: "Winning isn't everything.". His sergeant replied, "But losing isn't anything. I heard that a twentieth century philosopher named Charlie Brown came up with that.". Riker said, "This Charlie Brown must have been a very wise person.". The sergeant said, "I suspect he was."

I always love how the Peanuts Movie’s animation style (and similar movies) stays accurate to the 2D animation style; it’s like instead of making a model and moving it, they take 2D drawings and translate them into 3D, including cheated angles, disproportionate parts, and smears, making the characters look accurate.

I've seen 'nate and the 'docks and liked them both. I've been into comics since a little kid, but never the superhero comic books. I do, and have always liked Tintin too, having first seen them run strip style in Highlights for Children in the mid '70s, then rediscovering them with a Nerd clique in the early 1980s. More than most others in my family, I think, I've always been into comics & animation. This spread to European and Asian offerings too. I always like the depth, even when I don't agree with what is being pushed Calvin & Hobbes are like this, and a beloved & missed strip. I respect Watterson's decision, and have no disrespect for it. Thank you all artists living & dead for your gifts-Tom.

I always felt the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show was vastly underrated and was taken from us before its time. Most of the stories were based on full week or even longer story arcs you'd only otherwise see in big comic strip collection books. I also loved those non-holiday specific specials that you just don't see anymore. The holiday ones are great and all, but I just love these animated versions of comic strip style stories. Garfield did take better to the Saturday Morning Cartoon medium, but only because that property didn't have the same creative control Peanuts did. I'd go as far to say that Mark Evainer was the one that really tapped the fat cat's potential.

Some tidbits & corrections: *A "friend" named Charlie Brown* As in, Schulz's alter-ego. *A sharply-dressed bald boy* Charlie Brown is not bald. Like Schulz himself, Charlie Brown is lightly blond with very thin hair. *Numerous boys with the name Charlie Brown* Technically, all iterations of Charlie Brown are the same character. *Short children with large round heads* Aka the "Round-Headed Kid"/"Blockhead" look. *He suggested calling it Charlie Brown & Friends* Hence why the comic strip later became _Peanuts ft. Good Old Charlie Brown_ years later & the '80s TV series was instead named _The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show_ and why a lot of the specials were themselves titled _[Insert Plot Thread Here], Charlie Brown_ rather than the _Peanuts_ brand name. *Lucy represented his own sarcastic & fussy side* She was also inspired by his first wife Joyce's nagging, particularly whenever Lucy's seen calling out Charlie Brown's faults, complete with video projector slides. *Linus, his spiritual side* He was also based on a philosophical friend with separation anxiety issues (thus, the term "security blanket" being based upon the one Linus carries). *Hence why Charlie Brown never recieved a valentine* Excluding rare exceptions in the TV specials/the '80s _The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show_ TV series/Internet webisodes, of course. *Tanked in his plight to attract the Little Red-Haired Girl* She was given the name Heather in _It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown_ (although Schulz's had since said afterward that this was non-canonical); She was also based on a co-worker from one of Schulz's first jobs (outside of drawing "that comic strip with Charlie Brown & friends in it") whom Schulz wanted to ask out, but never had the gumption to actually do so. *Kick a football out of Lucy's hands* Charlie Brown turning invisible thanks to Snoopy's accidental magic in _It's Magic, Charlie Brown_ as one singular exception. *Bill Melendez* Else known as the animated "voice" of Snoopy & Woodstock!

Another excellent job! Love the title on this one. The Christmas special's maybe tied with the Halloween one. Linus's speech always gets to me. But I love the partially psychedelic Snoopy vs. Red Baron sequence in the latter the most. Along with that, I always cherish the Snoopy/Red Baron book I got as a kid c. 1970, with each page in different colors. As far as the comic, there are a lot of longer-form stories from the '60s and '70s that I enjoy, but I'm really fond of the strips on the last year or so of the series where Re-Run is drawing "underground comics".

That one has a start that isn't anything like what we know to have become (Blondie was a flapper in the 1920s and Dagwood was the heir to a fortune) and I used to love the movies when I was a kid, not realizing the films were from the 1930s and 1940s.

Stray thoughts: I thought as a kid that the 90's Frosty special was a Peanuts ripoff until I saw who animated it. In 2012 Japanese studio Madhouse had been awarded rights to produce Peanuts animation but did not immediately state what for. English internet went "lol Peanuts anime" and promptly forgot about it. A Peanuts tumblr account in 2013 says it was simply for MetLife TV ads broadcast in Asia. Anyway, great video.

My favorite special? A Charlie Brown Christmas! It still holds up after all these years. I saw the original broadcast. In the film Kill Bill there's a character who's referred to as "Charlie Brown". He's a mild mannered owner of a restaurant that's been taken over by the 88's gang. The gang constantly tease and harass the poor gang. And why is he called Charlie Brown? He's wearing a kimono inspired by Charli Brown's classic yellow shirt with the jagged black stripe. I think that the musical score for A Charlie Brown Christmas is the best of them all. There's a CD by the same name that includes more great music by the composer.

I used to live in California, and was a frequent visitor to "Knott's Berry Farm". In 1983, a section of the theme park was opened, called "Camp Snoopy", which is a woodsy area featuring Charles Shultz creations. During Halloween, it is called "Camp Spooky", and there are shows for the young ones, as well as trick and treating.

My mom is a massive Peanuts fan, being born in the early 60’s she grew up with them and continued watching and reading them. As me and my brothers were born and grew up we’ve also grew to love the Gang and continue our own traditions of watching the holiday themed specials and the rest around what we think is the appropriate times. We are hoping to continue this tradition with one of my brother’s kids when he and his wife have them and also mine and my other brother’s kids (if we both ever get around to marriage first).
