Retro Mario references are awesome

You can't call the first one a retro Super Mario reference seeming as when the game was made that was the most resolute image of a goomba from Nintendo. At the time, Images of that quality were actually pretty cool. It is also further seen in the 2020 remake of Link's Awakening the Goombas are HD which goes to show Nintendo was not referencing anything 8 Bit and was including Mario with the best the tech had at the time

In super paper mario, a big chunk of the levels (or at least part of them) reference past mario levels (for instance, the first level is 1-1)

Don't forget Wart They were in Link's Awakening too

I honestly didn’t know Link’s Awakening features other Mario enemies. The only Mario enemy character that I saw while playing the game was Chain Chomp.
