Evolution of most played Metallica songs [2023]

I tried my hand at data visualization, by following the great tutorial by Cary from Abacaba and Cube Roll. Code is pretty much copy pasted from his. I didn't change much things as visual design is definitely not my forte.
So big thanks to him for this tutorial!

This video shows the top 25 songs Metallica played the most live, displaying the day by day evolution. Note that there are 126 setlists up to 1993 that are missing.
All data were scrapped from Metallica's official website.
There will be quite a few more videos using these data following up. :)

That's actually 590 and 900 respectively with the shows with unknown setlists that are not included in the on screen count ^^ But indeed, I've prepared a moving count of the number of shows for a 3 year period, and they peaked at about 320 shows between 1991 and 1994

That’s was a great thing though because during the 80s they were obviously more focused on writing and recording new albums. The shows were a 2nd thought. Just compare their shows during the 80s. When The Black Album came around the material dropped in quality but their shows became so tight and well performed.

Great job! Here's a few things that I find interesting: 1) Whiplash was a staple until early 00s when it was almost completely forgotten. Why? 2) Blackened was played fewer times than The Unforgiven. How is it possible? 3) Ride the Lightning and Metallica each contains three of their most played songs. Who knew that RtL would age so well? 4) Fuel was the last new song to rise to the top. 5) King Nothing is the only Load song to be played after the promotional tour was over. 6) The Memory Remains has been played more times than two songs from Master of Puppets album. That's crazy! 7) Ride the Lightning made an astonishing comeback in late 00s and early 10s.

Yeah but it's also clear that getting an early lead helps a lot, As evidenced by Seek and Destroy taking so long to be overtaken, And then Creeping Death taking so long to be overtaken by MoP, And probably the earlier songs' headstart that keeps Enter Sandman from being top of this list. I can understand the logic of older songs getting a headstart but if you look at other bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth, their 15 most played songs would contain almost nothing from their 1st 3 albums or so. So I still think that the main reason for it is the band gauging which songs get the crowd pumped the most. However, let's see what the next video has to offer, as Poutrel is teasing!

Even though they didn't write blitzkrieg and Am I Evil, they definitely put those songs on the map
This kinda shows that if you rearrange it a bit (or even if you don't rearrange it like at all) plus throw in a couple of newer (post-2000) most popular songs that physically couln't make it to the top, you'll get an average Metallica setlist
