Fun fact: SM64 was originally going to have flagpoles for level endings. But Nintendo decided to replace them with collectable stars since the game was going to be open world and not linear.

It was also due to hardware limitations. Thats why there are only a few open world stages and the game is kinda short.

We've had open world games with flagpoles, and still do, nintendo has had hardware limitations and couldn't handle that much memory space, that used to be a big problem back in the day, this comes to show how much nintendo really expanded their games and franchises.
