Also, in 1987 Atari released the XEGS . It was a 65 XE computer re-designed as a semi-standalone game console. It is fully compatible with Atari's 8-bit line both games and computer hardware and software, but the keyboard can be removed and it can just be played with cartridges or even the built-in Missile Command game. I have one and it's probably my favorite 80s console.
@gevaliasvittne7150

Wasn´t the keyboard a separate,, a little pricey, accessory for the console ?. I was a little interested in this at the times because of its appearence (i had had a non-XL 800 before, but the steep price for getting a diskdrive was to tough for my teenage period🤔. I hated the cassette solution, and cartridges..,well i had a 2600 too, and EVEN MORE OF expensive cartridges wasn´t exactly what i yearned for). Commodore launched a similar low-budget console for use of C64 cartridges, approximately by the same time in western Europe. But considering it´s CONSOLES, but yet meant for cartridges to COMPUTERS, what happens if the game rom on the cartridge demands AN INTERACTION FROM THE KEYBOARD, in order to go on with the game ?..Without any keyboard, you´ll be sitting there as a moron then !. The way i sees it, this is not true consoles. It is computers, MASKED to be stylish consoles !.. 🤔

@@gevaliasvittne7150 the All-knowing Wikipedia says that there was a "Basic" set of the central XEGS console and a joystick (same one used on the 2600, but in that shade of gray that was really popular in the late 80s for some reason) and the "Deluxe Package" which included the keyboard and light gun. I acquired mine a few years ago, and everything was there, so I'm guessing the previous owner purchased the Deluxe Package. If it's powered on with the keyboard connected and no cartridge, it will boot to Atari BASIC, and can be used just like any other 8-bit computer in the line (I don't have a disk drive though). If powered on without the keyboard or a cartridge, it will default to the built-in Missile Command. If there's a cartridge, regardless of keyboard, it will load that game. I don't have it, but I've seen demos of a homebrew GUI for the 8-bit line and if anyone is thinking of any gift ideas for me for Christmas...

It was a better executed games console than the 5200 released five years earlier. Although the 5200 laid claim to sharing internal specs with the 400 and 800 computers, the library of cartridges for them were not adaptable, and it's said Atari designed the 5200 that way so that the home games division did not overtake from their computer division, but it also had several other problems including its joystick circuitry and, initially, the lack of ability to play the 2600 cartridge library which was rectified later on when they marketed a plug-in adapter that allowed you to play 2600 carts. Therefore, with the XEGS, you could play all the carts going back to the 400 and 800.
I never knew Atari Still makes consoles to this day. Great video 👍

I refuse to believe the Jaguar only sold 150,000 units. I've seen it and heard about it too much for it to have sold less than the Virtual Boy. It had to have sold at least 1 Million - 1.5 Million, but that's still not a lot.

So, the Atari Flashback did a lot better than the Jaguar
@jamesfrankiewicz5768
Жыл бұрын
The Jaguar was frequently defective and had a lot of returns. I had three friends who each got one on launch (the only three people I know who bought one while it was on the market), but had their console fail within a week. They then exchanged the failed unit for a replacement, then had the replacement fail within a week. After the second failure, all three decided to just return the Jaguar and get their money back. Based on that, I can believe 150k units may have been net sales figure, with significantly more having been manufactured.
@evlkenevl2721
Жыл бұрын
I remember the Jaguar being the one all the graphics snobs had or wanted. The sales figure mentioned does seem low for the reputation it had back then.
Atari also released a Video Pinball console model C-380 in 1977. It only played built-in games. Combat was released in 1977, not 1983. It was one of the original launch titles for the VCS and was included with many consoles.
@nowthatsjustducky

Yep. We went from a generic "Tennis/Hockey/Squash/Practice" Pong console; may have been a JC Penny or Radio Shack brand to the Video Pinball console (Pinball, Breakout, and Basketball) to the Sears Telegames 2600 with Target Fun (aka Air Sea Battle) as the pack in.

Playing "Combat" in your living room 1977 = Playing "Halo infinite" on Series X, on a 85" 8K screen, 2022 !...(besides, the "Combat" scenario is much more sensational !). Everything before that was only rectangles and squares/"console gen. 1". Different consoles had/had not colors. Or even, had/had not any sound at all...Damn,..i HATED my Pong console !. "Supersports" was the included game cartridge. But there was no sports. Only "moving squares and rectangles on the screen, with little gay-ish controllers". But in fact, "Submarine" was even worse, believe it or not !. I still owns the stuff. It probably works, but no one wants it i guess.. 🤥
I had an Atari 800XL console, tape drive and a couple of Wico Command Control joysticks. Man I loved that thing growing up in the 80’s.
Two things: Some of the games you showed while talking about the 5200 are the 2600 versions of said games. Also, where's the XEGS?

Great video. Pitfall and Donkey Kong Jr weren't on the Atari Flashback 2004 console though. In fact, even the ones that did appear were not the original Atari versions. It was running 20 NES ports that were made to run on NES-on-a-chip hardware (a cost saving business decision). Of course, Atari fans were appalled about that but they exist as officially produced NES ports of Atari games. That's a pretty strange thing and not many Nintendo fans seem to know about it.
You missed a fun fact. Nolan Bushnell also founded Chuck E. Cheese’s, which was a pizzaria and an arcade for all ages, in 1977.

Pong wasn't intended for release at all, it was just going to be Al Alcorn's learning project. They put it into a bar where it proved so popular that it kept malfunctioning due to the quarter receiver overflowing. That's when Bushnell and Dabney decided to release it further.

The first Atari cartridge game was originally called the Atari Video Computer System. The designation 2600 was only used from 1982 to distinguish it from the new 5200 model but most people called the original machine the "VCS" for many years after. The first Atari VCS had six switches, not four as in the graphic, and originally had a very heavy metal shield to prevent EM interference from the machine. It was then redesigned with a much lighter shielding and slightly sharper corners. "Heavy Sixers" are collectors' items and quite valuable. It was only several years later that the "four switcher" was released with two of the original lever switches being replaced by smaller switches on the back of the unit. The Atari Junior, a redesigned 2600, was not mentioned, nor were the preloaded Atari Juniors that were released in the 1990s to make a few dollars more on the ageing system. During this time, Juniors varied in the number of games in the console ROM -- up to 128 games in some versions -- and could also play 2600 cartridges. All the demonstration games shown for the 5200 were actually the 2600 versions. The Atari name has been bought and sold several times over the years and is not the same entity it was originally. In reality, only the name survives, save for the occasional releases of emulated games on superficially similar hardware.

I got an Atari 2600 for Christmas in like 1987 so I wonder if that was probably the junior? It was a pretty small, sleek consul, not the big old wood grain thing from the 70s, but it did not have any onboard games. It still took normal cartridges
@andymanaus1077
7 ай бұрын
@@luke5100 Yes, that sounds like the Junior. Initially they had no built-in games and were redesigned to reduce manufacturing costs. The preloaded versions came out in the 1990s as memory got cheap enough to dump a bunch of games into an onboard ROM chip.
The flashback models were made by a company called AtGames!
The "5200" games shown at 8:41 (Ms. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and H.E.R.O.) are NOT 5200 versions of these games. Instead, they are the 2600 versions. Also, the Atari Flashbacks are NOT made by Atari. They are made by a completely different company by the name of AtGames.

It wasn’t ET being bad that killed Atari; it was that Atari grossly overestimated the sales, manufacturing more games than there existed VCS systems. Atop of that, the entire market was just full of garbage games (mostly made by third parties, NOT Atari) that consumers had no idea if they would be any good. Been watchin since 1k subs
Atari please don't angry on Nintendo, they gave you the redemption to rise from the video game crash of 1983, if Nintendo never exist, no redemption, no awesome console like Atari VCS

Too bad Atari is still mad and will I hope it can hack Nintendo to no longer exist
Consistency at its best!
One slight complaint...when you talked about the 8 bit computers and game console, ie. The 400, 800 & 5200 and mentioned games released for those platforms, most of the video clips were from the 4 bit 2600/VCS and not the 8 bit platforms.

@Charles Gene Carter All those machines are actually 8bit & use the same microprocessor (6502). I can understand why the layman might think the 2600 is 4bit. The difference is in the amounts of RAM 🐏, as well as the power 🔋 of the graphics hardware & sound chips 🍟 . The 2600 had a mere 128 bytes of RAM the later computers & consoles had significantly more

@@cryptocsguy9282 OK, fair enough...I wasn't being accurate in my description of the 2600 and I have enough memory of the machine's architecture to concur with your clarification as I owned and used both and continue to have examples of both in my collection today. Knowing this doesn't negate my point that many of the video clips were from the VCS/2600 platform and not the 400/800 software releases.
I’m suprized you only have 419k subs!
Imagine if Atari do a remake of the 5200, 7800 and Atari lynx game consoles

Awesome. My first console was the handheld Lynx. I will definately be interested if Atary made an upgraded one.
Thank you, Flatlife
Amazing Video!
