Steam will always be able to hold it's own in my opinion, big boy, daylight, flying Scotsman and tornado are all prime examples

People often forget this, but the big boy also had a freight train of its own so it pushed the weight of the stalled train plus hauling the cars it already had on itself up a hill!

Big boy sadly retired in 2014 but thanks to Union Pacific she went back on the rails in 2022

You got it all wrong, Big Boy was retired in 1959 and 2014 in process getting restored and then 2019 is when restored completely back on the rail

Up 4014 definately rolls, but sadly up 3985 got replaced by this big boy, but soon will be restored

Union pacific wanted to have a big boy in it’s ranks again and they knew the steam shop could do the job of restoring her even though many people thought it was impossible but yes will soon have all three locomotives together one day and the challengers restoration still continues

The train is badass

The transformation after all of these years is truly incredible to watch. Amazing to think UP is willing to not only do this but actively participates in many large scale events.

Big boy is honestly a really good engine, he is one of my favorites and he is the strongest… 10/10 for the big boy 4014

4014 carries on the Spirit of 4015 as an engine but once she has her tender back after it’s converted she’ll have the entire spirit of 4015 with her

Yeah….. 4005 was in an accident where it approached a set of points but derailed because the switch wasn’t set properly and 4005 crashed, killing the three crewmen onboard

it had a diesel helper but im not sure if the diesel was helping it, usually the diesel is only for braking and if the steam engine is ran too long

The diesel is only used for powering the car and if something goes wrong with 4014 as a backup locomotive otherwise it is usually just being pulled by 4014

They should rebuild the 4011 is the one of the big boy and 4014 only one of restored but 4011 get's scrapped they should rebuild again the 4011 is the old king

She no longer needs it, as she has her own PTC now. It is still usefull for dynamic braking, and to extend the water she has.
