Evolution, Culture and Truth

In this Tufts University video, Daniel C. Dennett, philosophy professor and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University, offers a unique perspective on the role of philosophy in the cognitive and behavioral sciences. Dennett is known for his research on the mind and consciousness, relating philosophy to the scientific study of the brain, evolution and artificial intelligence.

Horay for Dennet's courage in calling BS on postmodernism. Clearly truth is the ideal that science moves toward, and postmodernism is a rabbit trail on that road.

@leatherneck2044 Facts are not up for debate. The book is available free online. You can look it up yourself, and you can do a word search. The first usage of "race" refers to races of cabbages. Later it talks about races of horses. More info: Google "Race (biology)" Knowledge is available if you look for it. If you actively avoid it on purpose, and just parrot what you've been told, you won't find it. But again, this is not a matter of opinion. If I said something false, please point it out.

@leatherneck2044 I'm going to take a wild guess and say you didn't just notice this yourself and are instead just parroting this idea as so many do.. but in any case I may as well clear this up: The word "race" does not refer to the modern use of human "races", but varieties of organism. If you looked at the actual book instead of just the title, it uses the word "race" in reference to things such as races of domestic animals, races of horses, and races of cabbage. (and favoured = selected for)

YVW, I notice my dates wrong BTW, I must have been in a daze. Josiah was king of Judah in around 650 BC. Previously Israel, a Canaanite neighbour, had been defeated by the Assyrians. This made Judah capital of the Canaanite brotherhood. It was at this time when a monotheistic theocracy was set up, to consolidate rule and as a means to unite the Canaanites against Assyria. Josiah was killed by Egypt though and Judah was also overrun. Ironically, the OT was originally written to unite ppl .

By OT you mean oral tradition? =) Just kidding. I guess some parts of the OT were based on oral tradition though, the jews had a very good way of remembering things and handing down knowledge and scripture. As for the NT - I don't think when the books were written is all that important. What is important is how accurate the accounts were and how much the NT is wishful thinking - interpretation of Jesus's life. Important for a Christian I guess. I would like to read more on this.. thx 4 the tip.

@ritchloui That I can remotely agree with, indeed it would need further explaining. The religious motivated have many goals, but they become so ignorant of the implications involved, and this is clearly the product of inaccurate indoctrination in the ways of the world. It can be troublesome to hear grown people not able to figure out reasons to not hurt others. It certainly of the authoritarian complex in their religious dogma, 'god is good, what god wants is good'.

My bible says "dust of the ground" (Gen. 2:7). Jesus climbed up on the temple and could see all the nations of the world. Not actually possible, as we can't view two sides of a sphere without a reflective surface. Joshua 10 records the story of the sun stopping in the sky, which, if the earth were spherical and orbiting the sun, would cause all objects on the earth to shoot off of the planet due to inertia. Neither is stated overtly, but they are implied through numerous passages.

If the universe is made of God and if God is perfect and indivisible the why does God fight himself? Evil is ignorance, it is a man who cuts off his own hand for a meal. it is not realizing the whole. religion is the divider in which one set of people are made worthy and the rest are condemned. this is ignorance, the root of evil is religious division, what we generally call bigotry. it is the worship of lesser parts, like $ and men nailed to sticks. religion claims authority falsely.
