Evolution, Culture and Truth
In this Tufts University video, Daniel C. Dennett, philosophy professor and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University, offers a unique perspective on the role of philosophy in the cognitive and behavioral sciences. Dennett is known for his research on the mind and consciousness, relating philosophy to the scientific study of the brain, evolution and artificial intelligence.

Wonderful lecture. Of all Professor Dennett's videos on KZread, this is my favorite so far.

Prof Dennett never disappoints... What a speaker and thinker!
Talk starts at 7:24
Horay for Dennet's courage in calling BS on postmodernism. Clearly truth is the ideal that science moves toward, and postmodernism is a rabbit trail on that road.
Thank you Professor Daniel Dennett; " The Truth Can hurt ", information is power.
Part of this brought to mind the concept of soul theft. All around I found it informative, even revelatory. Some things here should be part of commencement addresses.
This lecture ages so well.
Skip to 7:07 to avoid the long introductions and move right to Dennett's lecture.
It's an official channel providing good lectures for free... let them have their pomp. It was not so long ago that you would have had to be in one of the gilded circles just to have an opportunity to see something like this.
For those of you who want to skip the intro speeches, jump to 7:09. Enjoy.
@ritchloui That all is very well understood, and too the point of ad nauseam. Germs are a new faculty that was not understood then and now we are learning an incredible amount about the part of biology and the consequences. Please understand, I believe both are very important to know and understand.
@ritchloui Ok. Transmogrified? Are you saying the US founding character has become negatively modified?
great video thanks
where did your accounts go? your buddy steven is removing channels as well?
starts at 7 minutes 25 seconds. add #t=7m25s to the end of the url
What theory of creation do creatards say is true???
I noticed you did not come back to the video
The funny thing is that in another talk about consciousness, Dan Dennett points out the similarity, and shows a picture of himself next to Darwin.
If you took two soda cans, shook them up, placed them on a table, cracked them open and watched them fizz, you would not conclude that the sodas were arguing. You and I are more than mere chemical reactions my friend.

Congratulations. That's one of the dumbest things I've read in quite some time.
@leatherneck2044 Facts are not up for debate. The book is available free online. You can look it up yourself, and you can do a word search. The first usage of "race" refers to races of cabbages. Later it talks about races of horses. More info: Google "Race (biology)" Knowledge is available if you look for it. If you actively avoid it on purpose, and just parrot what you've been told, you won't find it. But again, this is not a matter of opinion. If I said something false, please point it out.
Thank you.
@leatherneck2044 I'm going to take a wild guess and say you didn't just notice this yourself and are instead just parroting this idea as so many do.. but in any case I may as well clear this up: The word "race" does not refer to the modern use of human "races", but varieties of organism. If you looked at the actual book instead of just the title, it uses the word "race" in reference to things such as races of domestic animals, races of horses, and races of cabbage. (and favoured = selected for)
Great quote. It is a really odd thing that literalism alway trumps the idea that creation is far grander and complex than a bunch of farmers, sheep herds and fishermen 2000 years ago could have conceived.
Dennett begins at 7:00.
Plato, Aristotle,Descartes, Leibniz.Kant,Russell,Whitehead, and Dennett.Dennett? Do you mean Dummett>? Searle and Grayling are what I think of as living philosophers, not an apologist for Darwinism.
@transHugo Where's the one mistake on wiki about the species problem?
@artemis12061966 as per Chomsky: religion is just one method of indoctrination...another is politics, society, and the norm...who knows how many others there may be out there influencing every decision we make and what we do. we have only begun to break down this barrier and we have really only found very few indoctrinators, there may be many more yet unknown layers of indoctrinations, every time we deconstruct one another shows itself to be present
thats you saying "i'm not that smart... too much long words and intelligent" but you put it in a disguise mostly for yourself and i understand that, and why you have the need to do so. it's hard to admit to yourself, that you've wasted a good portion of your life worshiping something that doesn't exist. you'll get there eventually sweety /hug
YVW, I notice my dates wrong BTW, I must have been in a daze. Josiah was king of Judah in around 650 BC. Previously Israel, a Canaanite neighbour, had been defeated by the Assyrians. This made Judah capital of the Canaanite brotherhood. It was at this time when a monotheistic theocracy was set up, to consolidate rule and as a means to unite the Canaanites against Assyria. Josiah was killed by Egypt though and Judah was also overrun. Ironically, the OT was originally written to unite ppl .
Speech starts at 7:05.
@ritchloui That I all agree with, but what does that have to do with the subject of my remark? I was responding to your idea that the mass murder of Native Americans was being ignored, please did I misunderstand? I am sorry if I made a mistake.
@Imaginefree69 I'm sorry but I believe the correct spelling is 'humour'.
dennett begins at 7:24
@transHugo Why are you asking questions when you ignore questions? Do you believe in the same theory of evolution as Parsivalhorse? if there is only one theory of evolution then why can't you answer this question? Where is my one mistake at wiki on the species problem?
@transHugo Where's my one mistake at wiki on the species problem? Why do you reject the theory of evolution that parsivalhorse believes in?
starts 07:24
AGREED!!! ^^
@Imaginefree69 Relax, it was just a joke. I live in the USA =). Life is better if you have a sense of humo(u)r. Having said that, jokes are often misunderstood online in text communication so I do apologize if you took offense!
why arent we invisible?
A fully conscious person can CHOOSE among the memes and decide which ones are beneficial , to me they are not a problem so much AND this is why i am against the indoctrination of children into religions ....
I have to ask, are you guys really arguing, or is this some bizarre internet meme? I have to say its a very strange conversation if you're actually arguing.
How did I lose? be specific
Evolution and truth have very little in common.
WOW. I wish I had said that.
@slovakmath Or we can question everything ......
@artemis12061966 and i can come up with literally at least 10 more layers to that onion of other influences with which we have yet to shed, right now without even having to sit and think about it very hard. from your response i assume you think there are no rational influences beyond that of society, religion, and norm...you seriously cant think of anymore influences than those 3?
One's every perception, thought, decision and action is a product of the degree and quality to which one accepts and conveys the underlying law of nature. Google it (i.e., the underlying law of nature). New information about the underlying law of nature has been made available online very recently.
the title alone should at least intrigue you. It does me ;)
You are asking the "pre"(sic) bono question-why do fish fly ,boks spring and peacocks fan their tails.Easy, . So Dennett can express his memes. He doesn't believe in skyhooks but he can accept, indeed expound, bootstraps.Oh, he's read about edges in a maths book. Why don't he go over the edge and lift himself up by his laces?
7:24
“These mysteries about how we evolved should not distract us from the indisputable fact that we did evolve.” ― Jerry A. Coyne, Why Evolution Is True
@artemis12061966 existentialism is curious but its beside teh point. what i am saying is you need to be a little more skeptical of your original claim that a "fully conscious person can CHOOSE among the memes and decide which ones are beneficial". that claim may sound cute to a person who is first beginning to learn about critical thinking...but a real critical thinker will never make a claim that they have the capacity to pretend they have a magical power to ignore all influences
Postmodernism is, in terms of dribbling stupidity, the secular analog of creationism.
skip the intro 7:10
@MaxBullshit we are going into the future while looking in the rear view mirror xD
Your buddy max needs your help
WildCatsKitten1 I think it's cute how they declare that they want to argue against evolution, then proceed to argue against spontaneous generation instead. They declare themselves to be greater experts than the experts, then immediately demonstrate that they don't even grasp the basic definitions involved.

Hi Steven
By OT you mean oral tradition? =) Just kidding. I guess some parts of the OT were based on oral tradition though, the jews had a very good way of remembering things and handing down knowledge and scripture. As for the NT - I don't think when the books were written is all that important. What is important is how accurate the accounts were and how much the NT is wishful thinking - interpretation of Jesus's life. Important for a Christian I guess. I would like to read more on this.. thx 4 the tip.
@IcemanOpenFly What is the exact moment when a child becomes an adult? If you can't tell me, you are admitting that children never grow up. Oh shit, in your case that's true. Okay you got me that time. I'll try another analogy...
@thechessstick how about the talking snake and the lady turned into salt? did they found it also? how about heaven? I bet they do! :D

I couldn't agree more, but you know Dan does a hell of a lot more than try to gently persuade nitwits that god isn't real.
@TurboRonin - I think you are all wet - who wants spelling jokes? You have an aqueous humor
Its not. "Arrogant" is just something theists with no more arguments tend to trot out when you have the gall to vehemently disagree with them.
where did you go lawnmower? all your channels are disappearing
@transtlantic You still keep failing to show a mistake at wiki on the species problem. You don't know what theory of evolution you believe in and you cant define species. You lose!
@ritchloui That I can remotely agree with, indeed it would need further explaining. The religious motivated have many goals, but they become so ignorant of the implications involved, and this is clearly the product of inaccurate indoctrination in the ways of the world. It can be troublesome to hear grown people not able to figure out reasons to not hurt others. It certainly of the authoritarian complex in their religious dogma, 'god is good, what god wants is good'.
My bible says "dust of the ground" (Gen. 2:7). Jesus climbed up on the temple and could see all the nations of the world. Not actually possible, as we can't view two sides of a sphere without a reflective surface. Joshua 10 records the story of the sun stopping in the sky, which, if the earth were spherical and orbiting the sun, would cause all objects on the earth to shoot off of the planet due to inertia. Neither is stated overtly, but they are implied through numerous passages.
@JungleJargon Yes they do, and its been proven. Can all you do is lie?
The essence of all beings is Consciousness. Consciousness is Brahman. Everything is Brahman.

It seems an article of faith that consciousness is the essence of all beings. Perhaps it is equally plausible that it is not. If we include the consciousness of viruses and other possible parasitic elements we might be at truth, but what is the point of it?
are you that scared to reply in a reasonable way?
@transtlantic If you want to see someone with a big problem, ask a creatard to define "kind". hehehehe
lamarck is one of the founders of evolution if you didnt know that o.O jeez brush up on your hystory
calm down steven
@transHUGO wheres my one mistake at wiki on the species problem? hahahahahahaha
If the universe is made of God and if God is perfect and indivisible the why does God fight himself? Evil is ignorance, it is a man who cuts off his own hand for a meal. it is not realizing the whole. religion is the divider in which one set of people are made worthy and the rest are condemned. this is ignorance, the root of evil is religious division, what we generally call bigotry. it is the worship of lesser parts, like $ and men nailed to sticks. religion claims authority falsely.
Creationism is real.... created within ignorant religiously inclined minds

@transHugo You are not doing very well here, You say there is only one theory of evolution and yet you fail to say you believe in the same theory of evolution as parisvalhorse. You keep failing to show me my one mistake on wiki about the species problem? where is it. hahahahahahahahaha
You are absolutely correct, GOD created something call a universe and the universe formed earth and then formed CELLs and the cells EVOLVED over many million/billion years into something else and that something else EVOLVED into what we now call Homo sapiens sapiens! Thanks to Jesus who sold you the idea of religion and faith! Really appreciated!!!

@transHugo Why do you keep failing to show the quote of where they define species in that paper? hahahahahahahahaha Do you believe in the same theory of evolution as parsivalhorse? Where's my one mistake at wiki on the species problem? hahahahahahahaha
