Autel reached out yesterday, and offered to help us understand the hand launch issue. I am sure it’s a first flight anomaly. I made a massive range test today and it was next to interference, no problems. Video up soon.

@@DadRandom I am very happy with the build quality of this drone. I didn't get the rugged bundle with the blue gpc case or whatever. I got the rugged bundle with the black padding inside the case and its a smaller sized case than that gpc blue on. Got an extra battery as well. Did all the updates, got the app going calibrated the remote and batteries are charged. Made an account with autel and before I take my first flight i am trying to get an insurance policy with state farm. I heard they will cover your drone expenses if something bad happens. They only cover the cost of a new drone not and additional property damages though. Im going to speak with my agent a get the details tomorrow. It would be nice to know im covered just incase

Thanks for sharing. Since this was the maiden flight, the gps almanac may not have had time to fully populate the data base from all the satellites overhead. That can take up to 15 minutes. I hear that you did the compass calibration, but if the compass and gps don't agree, you can get wild behavior. I have experienced this with similar results in a Yuneec Typhoon H. I'm glad it eventually stabilized and you had a good flight. It was fortunate that you had lots of open space around you!!

I think you hit it on the head... needed to wait to ensure you had better GPS signal before launching. I have the EVO 1, and normally I get GPS lock pretty quickly, but the last night it took more time than normal to get the lock. It stayed in ATTi mode for what seemed like forever, but it wasn’t really that long. Have fun, and yes, that extra flight time is AWESOME!!! But the cost of the batteries is DAMN... Get used to all the different flight modes, and the pause button on the controller. I also like the fact that you can fly without the phone connected, but don’t stray to far that way or you will be using the RTH and praying. When using your phone, that map is awesome because it will give you a nice red line to show the shortest way home. Don’t forget you can download the maps to the app before you go flying... just in case you are in an area without cell signal. And you don’t need to cell signal to fly! Well, enjoy, I know I am enjoying my SoCal weather for it, and always looking for interesting spots to investigate.

Dad, a suggestion, If you hand launch go into the app and launch under Boat Mode. When you hand launch the drone doesn't know what to do as you found out. Next time if that happens hit pause. It will just hover. Also sounds like you have allergies? Sniff?

AHHH! Nice job! It does seem a bit "clunky". Maybe the sensors were reacting to your hands? Man, I love the scenery! We have some beauty here in Florida, but I sure miss my Sonoran desert!

The real test is the gimbal response and the camera. There is a rock solid gimbal and camera picture. This drone can fly through a hurricane with its size. I need to gain confidence in the takeoffs and landings. The action this drone did when I first flew it was not good. An expensive drone cannot ever do this. If I was in a compact area, the drone would have smashed into something.

@@DadRandom Don't use boat mode that way... it is meant to get off the boat, and away from people or fishing rods, or anything on the boat. It lifts off, flies out, and then hovers. When on LAND don't use Boat mode because it will do exactly what it did. Others have flown in their yards near houses and the drone flies into a tree or something. It flies out fast to get away from the boat. You don't want a drone hovering on liftoff from a boat. It seldom ends well.

Like your video. Great picture! Maybe you should have done a firmware update first. Some guy In Sweden had the same problem and crashed it. Same toilet bowl problem

+Sean D i did the complete update. Crazy Patric is a friend of mine SWEDISH Guy 🤓 it has a little rondo with the change I geography and the update fully engaging in the drone MMU. It is all good now! I will discuss in a future video, the hand launch of this drone. I am in discussion with Autel. Excellent customer service😎👍🏻

Good for testing your flight in an open area. Autel and DJI don’t have dual IMUs/compasses on all of their drones. I would like to know if having that would prevent that.

So this video im assuming was before you did the update. I was reading comments below and noticed a month ago someone asked if you did the update and I believe you replied yes. I just purchased this drone about 2 days ago and I'm wondering if the one I get will need updated or if it will ship with the current update. Awesome landscape and dream place to fly. I could almost feel your nerves calming down as you continued to fly out over the beautiful landscape. Great video

Yes I really never had any issues after the initial flight and updates. I even received feedback from Autel. They said magnetic 🧲 interference.

He flew in boat mode. That is meant to do that, go up and fly away then hover. Boat mode fly away is there to keep the drone from hovering into sh*t on the boat, or people on the boat. It's not meant for hand take off, but many do run it that way, and many will suffer the drone in doing so.

5 mile flight today with no problems! No breakup of the 1080 signal. Pretty amazing.

Internet Gold Miner the Smart controller is all locked up in DJI red tape. I love it for flying the drone because it doesn’t require a bunch of extra setup.

@@DadRandom What setup would you have with a decent Ipad? If people would take the time to learn how to do things right we have less issues of drones crashing into homes or other incidents. But everyone has "gotta have it" right now no matter what just push the button and go. Learn nothing period.

+alfred cliff the evo 2 pro is newer technology and has a lot of cool features. The camera technology is superb. Battery life is also amazing. I would go Autel EVO2 Pro. I’ve flown both. Both are great and stable platforms.

You have to get used to Autel sticks. The inner dynamic of the sticks are far different from other brands. Once you get that worked out in muscle memory, it's easy to fly. Some say it's like flying non GPS drones... well, it's not, but it does take getting used to. So did the Anafi. People are used to DJI sticks, and then fly Autel... very different control sensitivity even at the same EXP curve settings.

I apologize for not having some light music to cover the dead audio spots. My audio recorder has a messed up setting I haven’t been able to diagnose that it’s screwing up my synchronization.

I had the same issue my 2nd day out but it went out over water and lost altitude, hit the water and sunk in 200ft of water.

No way I would have continued to this distance without doing a safety assessment of my bird. Recalibrate, compass IMU, whatever needs to be done. But definitely never continue a flight after an almost disaster like that. Would you get on a plane with a pilot that did it? Lol Good recovery though champ!

I bought an Ebay case, not any particular brand. They are $26-30 USD

Didn’t let it connect to all satellites in beginning just started and went. Helps to start and let it get all it can with gps before taking off. Talking about the EVO start up.

+nate pate always a best practice.

It might be the magnetic interferance plus the hand launch that cause the toilet bowl effect. The new firmware improves the algorithm dealing with magnetic interferance will eliminate the toilet bowl problem. Next time before hand launch, if possible, let it stand still for a while to search for satellite and initialize IMU data. It will work without still initialization, but initialization will always help.

I am with you, the only reason modern uav's toilet bowl is that they are looking for magnetic and gps postings for position sensing. I have a inspection business , going for 4 yrs , and don't launch by hand or near metal from cars or rear of 4x4 uses. And if not used for a while I allow for gps almanac to load, especially when it is new as the last time it had a full almanac was back in CHINA. I hope that this helps , check with Autel if it is capable of a hand launch from the back of a truck ( metal ) . Johnno Hennessy. ( Australia ).

Mr. Dad, have you experienced an issue in Ludacris mode where the drone yaws left suddenly and randomly. There are a few videos out there describing it. Hoping it's firmware, as the modularity, Flightdeck streamer, dlight time, versatility and specs have me leaning to purchase this one for my business. Btw Way to keep your cool on that cluster launch lol

+Jerry Grajewski I dont use Ludicrous mode, so I need to check that problem out. There is a ton of flying tests I have not done. I like the slower speeds and more spongy control. I try not to get jerky direction changes.

Put the drone on the ground. And let it take off automatically. It will set its Home Point so much better.

I’ve never seen anyone hand launch the Evo 2 yet until now. I wonder if launching on an unstable surface, like a hand launch, has something to do with the shaky start. Super sketchy! Glad you saved it.

+TAG Drone Photography I have both. They are both amazing. The MP2 needs to have the Smart Controller to compete in my mind. Without the Smart controller, the EVO 2 is a better drone platform. Max distance, Max altitude, no stupid pre flight bull crap checks.

+TAG Drone Photography to be quite honest, They are both really solid drones. It gets down to application and user preferences. I love Both platforms. The M2 is only better with the Smart Controller.

I am both drones and I have to say I’m absolutely in love with my Evo 2 right now. Probably the biggest game changer for me is the 36 37 minute flight time. Like dad here Being so used to my Mavic pro my instinct was to bring the drone home after about 18 minutes only to realize I basically have enough time to do a whole Nother flight. One battery is basically worth to two batteries

The EVO is very loud compared to other drones especially the Anafi! Not sure about that toilet bowl effect though...#scary

+Third Eye View I didn’t think the EVO 2 was loud at all. Thought it was deep and throaty sounding, I prefer that to the wing high pitches. The Parrot Anafi was the quietest drone because the props are so small and thin.

I have both mavic 2 and Evo 2 And I would say the Evo 2 Is noticeably quieter. I’ve also had many bystanders commented Just out of the blue how quiet the drone is

Only if there is no more issues with the arms folding during windy flight, or cracking of the fuselage. I like the Mavic 2 with the sky controller combo. I live the evo 2 camera. 👍🏻

One drone will not remain in the fleet. Like a Sith Lord, there can be only one Alpha. I will Probably move ahead-sell the Mavic 2 and buy the Air for the purpose of video production. If the Evo 2 continues to improve. I am Up in the air 😂😂😂

Hey do you know why it started doing that toilet bowl thing? This scares me from buying it because if this was in front of my house or near a building it would have hit it. did you do something wrong or did the drone just randomly do this?

I flew it tonight. No toilet bowl. We speculate that the lack of satellites could have been an issue? Three problems have been identified and fixed. Gimbal studder, horizon tilt and the toilet bowl only happened once. It seems like on the first flight. Crazy Patric had this happen too. I have the updated firmware. But I have total confidence that this will not happen again. It was rock solid today on a 5 mile flight.

@@DadRandom Thanks for letting me know the only thing is for me if i flew it in front of my house it would only have to take one time for it to crash and it seemed like you were holding it in your hand for a pretty long time. is there anyway you can check the flight logs to see if it was connected?

+Wayne John Hinrichsen why not? It’s a 1500 dollar drone. It should work right out of the box. My opinion. My Mavics all hand launch. No problems. I need to learn the dynamics Of this new bird, you are probably correct though with your first statement.

@@DadRandom - thanks for the reply. Upon hand launching, it did a small circle on its own. Do you think that was too orientate itself to setup a home point maybe? Do you think boat - mode was the issue? I love the Evo II, and want too get one soon. 😀 BTW, what does boat - launch assist with? Did it perform well and hand launch well in subsequent attempts?

Wayne John Hinrichsen love your name by the way! And you have nothing to worry about, I believe I bought a production model without the early update. The drone was tested in China, and the MMU needed to be recalibrated to North America. We are full go ahead for hand launches when appropriate. Today I ground launched because i was near magnetic interference, as a precaution. What an amazing flight!

I’m not sure the sound characteristics are accurately being represented here the thing about the Evo is that I think the bigger blades spin a bit slower and so the sound tends to be a bit lower and bassier Then other dronesWhich makes it sound a bit quieter I’ve had many people just coming out of the blue how quiet my Evo is

How did you enabled precision mode?

Felix Rimfrost just fly it normal. It’s a solid drone. Get the feel for the controls. The controls are snappy, and the drone flys smooth. Remember, the sensors will keep the drone from hitting anything. This drone is SKYDIO 2 with a 5 mile range!😎👍🏻

+Rob Weaver it has to do with the MMU and electromagnetic interference. Seems like people who buy directly from China have early model EVO 2 drones, i believe it takes a first flight for the drone to complete the firmware update to sink in. China and the Western US have different climactic interferences. Like Acclimation of sorts. Autel reached out to me to discuss the hand launch so I can correctly teach it. Bam! We are off and running with this amazing product. 🤓👌🏻

How many satellites did display show before you took off? My guess is you did not not yet have GPS lock on 7+ satellites before you hand launched and since you were also covering up the bottom vision sensors while hand launching - they were useless for establishing stable position lock. Next time, ensure you have GPS lock BEFORE hand launching.

You May be right, i cannot tell you. I held the drone for a good amount of time, but that doesn’t mean I had enough satellites. I think software needs to prevent takeoff if this is the case. It did settle down and fly solid. I was working hard to control the drones acceleration at one point. It literally took off in its own direction when I said that bad word 😜 i immediately went up stick and left to counter the move. Then I hit auto land which calmed it down. I flew the drone back to me and it stabilized when the sensors found the ground. It has amazing sensors. You saw that with the premature second hand launch. It quickly recovered. I really love this drone. It will be a good one!

+Fishing and flying with Tolley yes, the firmware was immediately upgraded and I never had an issue. I had a Chinese unit, and it may have needed a IMU calibration. Very early model.

Ha ha ..😅guess it was looking for a boat. Don't throw it like the Anafi. Let it slowly lift. 8K is overkill we are just getting full home 4K systems.

I really don’t think that was an issue I watch the launch a few times now and I don’t feel like he put really any kind of abnormal force to toss.

It's a nice drone, but it's too big. The Mavic Pro series is big enough, IMO. That model is $1800, right?

+Tom Skerke 8k was not a reason I bought this. It’s the 30 plus minutes of loiter time and the excellent hefty drone frame. I want my full frame drone to be durable and able to do big complex long flights that require a lot of patience. This drone is quiet in the air and has well balanced 4k video that performs well in low light.

It's a little shocking when these drones decide not to cooperate. It's thankfully a rare experience with both DJI and Autel drones. Not sure why you're reluctant to film in 4k. Many people watch KZread videos on there 4k TV these days. It can look spectacular, especially with the beautiful scenery you film.

@@DadRandom I hear you. I can definitely see the difference in 4k on a 4k screen. You have to create proxies when editing 4k. Then it becomes no different than editing 2.7 or 1080. Keep in mind KZread's algorithms favor 4k uploads.

If you take off in hand mode, the sensors underneath need to PHOTO the take off point for accurate RTH and precision landing are turned off, I almost choked when I saw you do it... there is BOAT as you used but that needs setting up and is completely different, it takes into account a hand launch but you loose all of your home positioning, I really cant understand why you would choose that when the normal take off and landing is so good, precision to a few inches... You have to cover all the bottom sensors, what did you think was going to happen, I have the EVO 1 and all of these things and more are applicable to the 2... not impressed and gives a really bad example of the EVOs capabilities when it is way above the DJI stuff.

Waiting for my mavic Air 2 upgrading from the original mavic pro. never found it cost-effective to upgrade from the mavic pro to the mavic 2 pro just not worth it.. But the pneumatic Air 2 does even better things than the Evo 2 and the mavic 2 pro at half the price. AND IT HAS A 6.2 MI RANGE!! I do think that the AUTEL EVO 2 OVERALL IS THE KING OF DRONES. FOR THAT PRICE POINT.. I LOVE THAT IT HAS NO GEOFENCE AND STOP YOU FROM DOING ANYTING!!!! WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS IT IS WHEN YOUR DRONE DOESN'T TAKE OFF AND YOU HAVE TO GET SOME TYPE OF CLEARANCE.. WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO WORK!! UNBELIEVABLE DJI.. MIND YOUR FREAKING BUSINESS!!! FAA DOES IT MAKE YOU PUT GEOFENCES ON.. WE ARE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN!!
