That's the difference between people and their boating style. I don't fish, I go fast offshore. And I'm sure glad if I'm a few mph faster than the guy running next to me - and if I can accelerate faster during a short run, I'm ecstatic.

ALL manufactures do similar things. It is what it is. Fact is that Mercury has won more independent speed and drag tests than any other - but they have also lost more MPG and noise tests than any other. This was set up by camp Rudy, and they won. See the independent tests if you want clean results. This is just showmanship.

@@bigkountry29 What does your little 40 hp outboard have to xo with any of this? I'm a Merc guy, but I also know what the downfalls of the Merc Opti-booms were. And if you think that a 250 Opti would smoke a 250 Etec, you are so wrong it's not even funny. The Etecs are very reliable compared to the Opti and they make great power. The current Evinrude outboards do not suffer from the lack of quality control Johnson and Evinrude outboards of the late 80's and 90's did. With the discontinuing of the Merc Optimax, Merc have finally stepped up their game and made some properly fast and hopefully reliable engines. I just switched from a 300XS to a 300R, and I have reduced my acceleration times as well as gained 1.7 mph in top speed. Had Merc not come out with these new V8 outboards, my Mate would now hsve an Etec on its back.

This is answering a 5 year old question and at this point Mercury has bought OMC "evinrude" and shut down the etec line. It's all about money. Fuel economy, maybe, even though direct injection has leveled the field considerably. But reliability? 2-strokes have a huge advantage, being very simple in design, requiring far less maintenance and having proven themselves over time. The (relative) misery that has taken place with 4-stroke dirt bikes since the 90's gives a good indicator of what to expect with outboards. Unfortunately. I'd like having a quiet, fuel-efficient 4T outboard, but sheer weight as well as cost and trouble of maintenance - not to mention expected service life - keeps me away from them in foreseeable future.

Thirsty, noisy, even smoky, but they just work and that's what really matters. I'm currently doing a complete rebuild on an '89 crossflow, instead of just buying a Verado. I've spent way too much time in tow and way too many $1000's on servicing what essentially is unnecessarily complicated, unproven (in marine applications) and fragile technology. That's just my experience. YMMV.

Lol. Just stop right there. Do you realize how silly that sounds? It very common knowledge that the Yamaha 4 strokes have absolutely terrible torque numbers - even Yamaha knows this. This is why Yamaha never uses that as a selling point.

My Yamaha 40hp four stroke with a power prop beats my buddy's 30hp Evinrude Etac with a standard prop. My boat weighs about 800 pounds and his boat with the Evinrude weighs 550. My Yamaha was faster out of the hole and has more speed. This video is BS as far as I'm concerned!!!
