Mark should have done two things: 1. Making sure that when you meet up at parties, everyone is exited to see YOU, much more so than MIL so she understands that no one cares about her wishes or thoughts. 2. He should ignore his mom until she acknowledges his wife. Stand next to MIL and talk with wife as if MIL isn't there. In general, make it VERY clear to his mom that his wife comes first.

It is the husband's fault. He kept allowing his mother around his wife, who proceeded to predictably harass and degrade his wife, over and over.. Set boundaries is only step 1. Step 2 is to enforce by any means necessary, even if that results in permanent no contact. His attempts were always half-assed. People like MIL exist because others fail to set and maintain boundaries. He basically just issued empty threats to her. Why would she take it seriously? It's not anyone's job to raise an adult woman right; but it is the husband's job to protect his wife from his family and not let this carry on. A decent partner would have uninvited her from the wedding after MIL called his wife fat.

@@clay5291there’s a huge difference between having and raising a child, and being in a relationship, energy wise. Being in a relationship doesn’t require you to be exclusively responsible for keeping someone alive for a few years solid, I’ve never had a relationship that required me to wake up multiple times in the night for months on end. And when I’ve been struggling, with health or just mentally, I’ve been able to take time to myself when in a relationship. You can’t do that with a child, you can’t take a break from being a parent. I don’t want kids, because I’ve never had a maternal urge. Kids are cool, but I don’t desperately want one, and I don’t want to have a kid if I’m anything less than 100% invested because it’s not fair to the kid. I also have health issues, so even adopting it would be difficult to take care of a kid the way they deserve. Not everyone wants kids, and realistically the best thing to do is be accepting of that, rather than encouraging people who shouldn’t be parents to be parents because “wanting kids is natural” or whatever

This is so stupid?? Ppl get married because they want to be with the love of their life forever and not just be "boyfriend girlfriend". Having kids is a choice and in marriage it is not mandatory, people only say this question "why marry if you are not having kids" is because everybody is seen being married for kids and when they see a marriage where the couple has different opinions on having kids they freak out.

If you can’t comprehend love, it still Makes a lot of sense if you consider the legal aspects. If your partner is injured, some country’s hospitals won’t consider you as family and so won’t let you into their room to see them without families consent. If you are seriously, seriously injured, your family gets legal power over medical decisions instead of your partner, even if you’ve been in a relationship for decades. If one of you dies, family could contest the will if you aren’t married. I’ve seen stories where someone’s life partner has died, and their estranged family had claimed their pets and property from under them. But also, what does marriage have to do with making kids? You don’t need to be married to have kids, you don’t lose any legal rights if you aren’t married?
