EVH 5150 Overdrive Review: A/B comparison with Friedman BE-OD. My overall thoughts.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was initially disappointed with the EVH 5150 Overdrive but then after giving it a second try, I had a new opinion on it. Check out the comparison with the Friedman BE-OD. For a long time nothing compared to that pedal. Then I tried out the 5150 Overdrive. These are my overall honest thoughts.

Some days I just hate my tone and I can’t get a tone I like no matter what I use. The next day, same rig, sounds great

Amazing video, just what I was looking for: how those pedals behave with another overdrive pushing them. Thanks so much !!

Thanks for the good review. I currently have the BE-OD Deluxe but like you I wanted to explore other OD pedals and the EVH came in mind. I found a used EVH OD pedal in excellent shape for $150 SHIPPED in Reverb. I went ahead and purchased it. Thanks again!

Thanks man. How long ago did you purchase it from Reverb? I’m wondering if you bought the one I listed. I quoted $150 for it too. Yeah I ended up selling it. Lol.

Great demo. I have both EVH 5150 and BE-OD DELUXE pedals. I find that it's easier to get a good tone out of BE but if you spend little time with MXR you can get great tones out of it as well. So in my opinion both are great pedals.

Good video. I too thought the Freidman sounded a little too compressed here compared to the EVH. I actually also have the EVH and I pretty much keep the same settings as you have here……mids pushed a little more. But I actually keep my guitar volume down and get a pretty nice mid gain thing and then crank the guitar volume back up for solos. I have yet to try this in a live/gig setting so I don’t know how well it will cut through a band mix 🤔

I own the EVH 5150 overdrive and run it through a Blackstar ID 30. Although it’s solid state, it allows you to use different tube voicings. I find a big difference in the character of the pedal depending on which tubes you run it through (FWIW).

As a set up I had a 5150 pedal, tc electronics hall of reverb and flashback with a seymour duncan power block *the small one through a 1x12 laney. Sounded freaking amazing.

Nice demo.. I like how the EVH sounded on your demo. I have both pedals, and l also have the be od deluxe, and for me, they both sound great. I agree with you to use the EVH pedal in a clean channel of an amp; l tried it on the effects loop and it didn't sound right.

The 44 Magnum is simply nothing more than a power amp. It really depends on what preamps in addition to either the 5150 or the BE-OD is running to and then how you set your EQ will determine whether it sounds good or not.

The trick with the BE-OD is not turning the presence too high, maybe keep it around 10 or 11 o’clock. Keep the treble semi low like almost at noon and the tightness up to like 1 o’clock. Then set the EQ on your amp to a really crystal clean channel setting the treble around 1, maybe 2 o’clock, the mids around noon and the bass around noon as well. I’ve gotten killer metal tones from that pedal. I know that can of bees sound you’re talking about. I can’t stand that tone. It reminds me of 90’s distortion pedals.

5150 is the best overdrive pedal I’ve ever owned, it all comes down to the three band EQ and range of gain from very light breakup to complete meatball overdrive

I always watch as many videos as I can before buying gear that catches my attention. I've seen plenty of vids on this pedal which is why I got it. I wasn't pleased at first but after giving it a second chance I ended up liking it. I sold it after a while because I went back to using a multi effects unit.

I love the Deluxe. I’ve had a chance to play with it quite a bit when I worked at Guitar Center. I know the recommended voltage for the Deluxe is 18V but would the pedal survive a show just running on 9V?

@@duaneraymond4252 thanks man. Some people like to push too much and then it ends up sounding noisy. I don’t even turn up the gain much on the overdrive pedal. I keep it slightly up enough to bring a little breakage but still sounding clean. The EVH and the BE-OD already has high gain and saturation. I use the overdrive pedal to push the lower mids on the distortion pedal.
