One isn't better than the other. They have different styles. The thing here is, this time, the judges didn't give Plushenko the score he deserved... judging on what he did on his performance they had to give him not less than 5.9. This was kind of a steal. Even Yagudin' s face at the end said it all. He thought Plushenko would be first.

А вообще прикольно. Столько лет прошло после этих программ, а их до сих пор пересматривают и отстаивают свою точку зрения за "своего" фигуриста. Мне тоже больше нравится Ягудин, но это не умаляет достоинств Евгения. Ведь действительно, когда они выступали, то всем другим фигуристам приходилось бороться только за 3-е место. И хорошо, что Алексей ушел к Тарасовой. Останься они вдвоем у Мишина, не было бы такой яркой борьбы.

согласна, что тот факт, что Ягудин ушел, сделал борьбу более зрелищной. А теперь почему то все хотят видеть девочек - фигуристок в одном штабе, не понимая что им там тесно. Ну не странно ли?

Assolutamente perfetto, grande pattinatore.

Yagudin is great, but Plushy is Picasso on ice (as his coach said). I was a fan of Yagudin at that time, now revisiting, I'm falling in love with Plushy's style. Surprised that professionals, like Dick, couldn't see the innovation... I guess, Plushy was way ahead of his time. Now, I see Hanyu is the next great artist on ice. And US skating school is still practicing jumps and hasn't gotten to the figure skating yet. Maybe that is the reason they can't appreciate the beauty of the genius work...

Да, Плющенко настолько опередил время, что и сейчас, спустя 25 лет, как он вышел из юниоров, никто к нему не приблизился. Разве что Ханю, но его Монблан - это все равно не Эверест Плющенко

Honestly I like them both, but this time I have to say I don't understand the score they gave Plushenko. It's like they wanted Yagudin to win so they lowered a bit the score on him. And it's not fair since what he did on the ice deserved not less than 5.9. Again, I love them both as performers. I'm just thinking plushenko's score wasn't fair... Even yagudin thought he would be second. His face after Plushenko's performance says it all.

Plushenko has been doing this straight line footwork at the Cup of Russia 1997, when he was just 15 years old. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHdmtNV-Z7TWo6w.html (starting 2:16 ). It was light and airy and elegant. Plushenko did not pick it up from anybody.

The US commentaters always biased to Plushenko because he is fully trained by Russian coach under Russian system. They praise Yugudin because he was trained by a Canadian coach under Western system. Some politics is involved there.

Plushenko is a great skater but Yagudin just had the whole package in the 2002 olympic season. Both his short and long programs were all time masterpieces and Yagudin's long program was so well chreographed that program-wise, it was the judges' favorite throughout the entire olympic season. Tough luck for Plushenko but I think his program lost rather than his skating. You need the best program to compete with a great one like The Man in the Iron Mask and unfortunately, Plushenko's program was not that great.

Прошло достаточно времени и по факту: Плющенко - величайший фигурист в истории, один такой; Ягудин - очень хороший фигурист, но только один из тех, кто соревновался с Плющенко.

Леша лучший, потому что искренний и лучезарный, мощный, настоящий мужчина. Очень артестичен! Когда катается ,всю душу выкладывает и выкатывает! А Плющенко жилы рвет- работает на результат! Поэтому впечатление разное! От катания Лёши душа радуется, спасибо ему!!!!

Dick Button's commentary makes this impossible to watch to be honest...like just because you skated with wooden arms doesn't mean everyone should. Plushy arm movements are one of my favourite parts of his skating! They are NOT flailing, they are deliberate and posed to his fingertips. It's not the best program ever, but I've seen waaaaay worse.

This was my favorite Plush program and I was always more of a fan of Yagudin. I was stunned when he lost this. Dick Button was just jealous of all these modern skaters who were allowed to move their arms in various expressive ways and not forced to keep them in a praying mantis position.

отличный комментарий от Дика Баттона. Программа ужасная. За такое нельзя давать первое место. Его и не дали. На олимпиаде будет другая программа. Но и она не будет идти ни в какое сравнение с ягудинской. Трудно кататься сердцем, если его просто нет

Как бы не силён был Плющенко технически, в артистизме он всегда уступал Ягудину, как ни старался и в оценках это видно.

Ничего подобного!! Вы значение слова артистизм не знаете!!!В артистизме Плющенко НИКОМУ ,НИКОГДА, НЕ УСТУПАЛ!! Ему до сих пор в артистизме нет равных и не будет!! У Плющенко артистизм свой!! Ему его никто не ставил !! Он сам артист от природы. А Ягудину весь "артистизм" всегда Тарасова с Морозовым ставили!!!Всегда ему показывали и разжевовали что, где ,как .Как лицо состроить , как руки поставить. Он сам в интервью тех лет и более ранних всегда говорил ,что даже не понимал что и зачем делал на льду. Что ему всё всегда Тарасова всё ставит и объясняет.И что в этом своего??? Он всегда был просто дурачок в руках талантливого тренера-кукловода Тарасовой и не более!! Да она сделала из него чемпиона,но сам он был изначально абсолютной ПУСТЫШКОЙ. И ничего кроме техники у него не было.Его все летающей табуреткой еще тогда называли. Посмотрите его выступление 97,98 годов до Тарасовой. В нем артистизма ни грамма НЕТУ!!! И посмотрите выступления Плющенко тех же годов . Плющенко уже в конце 90х в возрасте 15,16 лет был артистом. У Плющенко талант от природы, СВОЙ. А у Ягудина нет.

See now that is funny, because Alexei is known for his passion and his great foot work being with his music. My favorite is Alexei but I give credit where credit is due and both Alexei and Plush are great skaters. I loved how they pushed each other to perfection and we will never see another skater rival either of them. It's the end of the Golden era of men's figure skating.

@@user-zb6or2ln5n умничка, как технично поставили трояна на место. Я тоже считаю, что оба эти фигуриста талантливы, но Евгений признан лидером мирового фигурного катания ! И признан профессионалами! У него почти в 2 раза больше побед чем у Ягудина, сколько раз он приносил побед и наград для России! Оскорблять это удел ущербных и обиженных, не лучше ли посмотреть правде в глаза, конечно у каждого из них свои поклонники, но эти ребята(Женя и Лёша) замечательные люди и патриоты своей Родины! Дорогие друзья, давайте будем уважать их за этот титанический труд, за то, что уже на протяжении многих лет мы не перестаём восхищаться их мастерством, красотой и мужественностью!!! Well deserved Alexei!! But it was close. Both did a great job. I really miss these two competing against each other, it was exciting and fun to watch. I wish they would compete in another sport now. What do guys with beaten up bones play? Golf? I would watch them.

ah, boo hiss about those flailing arm comments :-P I'm aware that's the biggest [if only] criticism his skating gets, but to me, that's part of his style.

"Flailing" means undisciplined, which was never Plushenko. His artistry was unquestionable, just like the jealousy of many other skaters, predictable as snow in Russian winters. After 2 decades of brilliant skating, most of his so-called "rivals" are forgotten while Plushenko skates cheerfully on in shows around the world--having just premiered new work in China a couple of days ago.

Damn, Dick was bitchy that night! Loved this program, wished Plushy had skated it again. I was an Alexei fan back then but was shocked when he won this, I figured Plushenko had it wrapped up.

Whenever they competed against each other (unless one fell down) I was always on pins and needles waiting for the results. Both are so exceptional but Alexei is my favorite. Dick is bitchy all the time and is critical of not only every skater (except Michaelle Kwan who he loved) but critical of these two as well. I never liked him, even when he praises.

Yags was not at his best at GP, but still the judges appreciated his artistry and technique more than Plushy. Go Alexei!

I agree. He is a total package and is the best!!!

This program is wretched. I love how Dick tries to be polite and contain his dislike at first, saying "well, umm, it was kind of interesting", but then explodes with joy when the far superior Yagudin beat out this trash from Plushenko.

@thequadlegend The way this Gran Prix Final was developed, forcing the skaters to do 1 Short Program and 2 Long Programs over the course of 1 or 2 days is pretty demanding. It also threw a wrench into the results as some skaters who opted to just quickly threw a 2nd Long Program together without spending time and effort to develop good choreography end up losing, which was what happened here with Plushenko. Had Plushenko opted for to resurrect an older program that was properly choregraphed...

I've never cared for Plushenko, I've always preferred Alexei's style cause Alexei was more of an artist he had everything the jumps and the artistry, he FELT the music and the story he was trying to tell. Flapping your arms around like a bird is not artistry and that's all Plushenko does.

+Megan Woodard . This program was bad, so they changed it to SLC. He skated the Carmen program. And that is funny what you said. Plushenko has the most 6.0s for his presentation. If you don't know: "At the age of 16, Plushenko became the youngest male skater to ever receive a perfect score of 6.0. He received a total of seventy five 6.0's before the new Code of Points judging system was introduced.Under the Code of Points system, he has set 13 world record scores (5 in the short program, 4 in free skating, and 4 in the combined total)." The art is very subjective ,you know. And it seems the judges appreciated the artistic side of him, too. Yagudin doesn't come close to him. Probably he has max 20 60s. And this is not because he retired in 2002. He was almost 3 years older than Plushenko.

+Zoltánné .Varga Well he didn't get those 6's here nor in the 02 Olympics. Alexei broke the record of the most 6's in a performance in the 02 World Championships. I'm sorry but Plushi is over rated in my book.

The point that 19 years old yuzuru hanyu got higher scores in components than 31 years old plushenko speaks a lot how artistic plushenko was ... (I am not underestimating yuzuru do not get it wrong) plushenko has never had a good interpretation or choreography he knows it, we know it and whole professional figure skating community knows it ... of course he was getting good scores (points), since there was nobody even a bit close to him with the technical scores for about 5-6 years ... and he was getting 6.0 s since again nobody was better than him those few years, but when there was yagudin plushenko has never got 6.0 as a second score he just could not since he was way way way behind than yagudin ... as dick button says he was trying to imitate alexeys strait line footwork but it was obvious in comparison how better yagudin was He is one of the most (if not the most) appreciated figure skaters in the history so he does not need to be appreciated for the things he does not have ( like artistry )

@@mariamrusishvili1724 Your statement that Plushenko never got a 6.0 on the second mark when competing against Yagudin is simply not true. Off the top of my head, the Europeans the year before (2001) come to mind. Plushenko got 2 perfect scores for presentation (and one for technical) in the long program to beat Yagudin at Europeans for the 2nd year in a row. In fact, Plushenko beat Yagudin four times that year in 2001: worlds, GPF, europeans, and russian nationals. And scored plenty high in presentation while doing so. You clearly don't care for Plushenko's style and have a right to your preference, but many many love his presentation and artistry (including plenty of judges).

For all his jumping ability I think he is boring to watch as he has no program ever....He flails the arms around but not with the music...He doesn't feel or skate with the music
