Series Description: Welcome to the Complete Beginner Whittling Lessons Series! This series is intended for people who are completely new to whittling and looking for advice on how to get started. It starts with a series of four videos about what equipment and materials are needed for whittling and then there will be a series of projects that will teach the basics of whittling while completing specific projects.
Note that this series focuses on what I would call hobby whittling using dedicated whittling knives and wood that are specifically designed for whittling as a hobby. We will not focus on found wood carving, knives that are not specifically dedicated to whittling, spoon carving, bushcraft or other forms of whittling and woodcarving in this series.

I need a v-tool but I already went over budget on my new hobby. I thought I got all I needed. Now I’m finding way more stuff I need but everything is so expensive. But if I had a v tool. I think I probably wouldn’t have sliced my hand yesterday

I recently discovered your channel and have been going through your excellent vids. You have a very clear presentation style. I know you mention Pfeil at the end, but just wanted to highlight that recommendation. I have about 10 of their gouges and a few v-tools and they are my go-to kit. They are of an incredibly high quality and a pleasure to use. I guess I spoiled myself because they are the standard by which I judge other tools. The title of the vid doesn't suggest your recommendations would be limited to palm tools, and the Pfeils I use are all full size, but I find I don't mind them even on small carvings. The only palm size tool I use is a soft-V from Drake and it is superb. I bought my wife a Flexcut kit that included two knives and two palm tools and it was my experience with her palm tools that really put me off Flexcut. That blade flex you mention is not at all what I'm used to - probably because I don't experience it in Pfeil, or Drake. It makes me feel like I'm going to break it, and I just can't get comfortable with it, so I lose my focus on my carving. I know many seem to like them, but to each their own I guess.

Thanks for the positive feedback and the info on Pfiel. I would like to get some at some point, it sounds like they would perform well and similar to my preferences as well.

Just a production tip, I see your frustration with getting the tip of the tool in focus. By holding your hand at the base of the handle, you are forcing the focus down there instead of the tip. If you can just put the tip in between your fingers the focus will be at that point, and we will be able to see much clearer what you’re showing. Hope that helps! I love your videos!

Been enjoying your videos, was looking for simple projects for new club members. Love the 15 minute wood spirit! Have you tried Drakes narrow angle V tool around 30 degree, but it's actually a slight soft 'v' and works so much better than the other narrow angle 'V' tools I've used (Flexcut and Pfeil16?)? Love the quick shadow of the 30 degree tool.

Thanks, I've looked at it, but don't have the 30 degree one yet. Now I might have to try it!

What’s the difference between a soft v tool & a # 11 vernier? Thanks very much for all your beginner lessons!

Soft V is still a v shape overall, just with a rounded bottom instead of a sharp angle. The sides still point outward like a V. A #11 gouge or Veiner is shaped like a U where the sides curve to the point that they end pointing vertically, or near vertically.

What finish did u use for the complex spirit u did ? If u don’t mind me asking sir ❤also would Pfeil set b and c total of 12 tools cover most all rages for 6 inch character carving ? Thanks

  • @dywoodcarving

The finish on the complex spirit is a mix of boiled linseed oil with a small amount of burnt umber oil paint. I am not all that familiar with the pfiel sets, but assuming you are talking about the palm tool sets, I would likely think so. I don't actually use gouges much aside from a few vtools and mini gouges for texture, but the pfiel tools are a great set.

choosing carving tools is so confusing for a beginner like me and living outside US/europe makes it harder to get good quality ones. If im doing letter carving is it okay to stick to your recommendations for my first v tool? I have been practicing with straight letters for now using just some straight chisels but i really want to do curved letters next and i already made a mistake buying some cheap set of carving chisels which is so bad its practically useless.

I don't have a lot of experience with letter carving, but I do think the flexcut v-tool I mention in this video should work well. It is used by a lot of carvers for similar purposes.
