We purchased a 3 pack Arlo essential spotlight, had to charge them all 6 times within the first week we had them and by the second week every camera started to fail entirely. A foggy evening left mist in the LED notification window as well. I would recommend paying more (cry once buy once) for the better cameras with removable batteries.

@@damiion666 because those absolutely work without issue . My father has 2 of 4 Arlo Essential units with solar panels that are currently offline with 0% charge. This happens every few weeks. I'll help him take them down, factory reset each unit and charge it over night. Then they'll be good for another few weeks (with the solar panels)

I recently purchased the Arlo Pro 4 XL bundle. I’ve been reading up on a ton of surveillance cameras including consumer level and commercial level. What I’m learning is that anything above 2k is not worth the cost unless you increase the lens size above 2.8mm which is paramount to high quality video surveillance. The other thing I read is that the wider the field of view, the lower the resolution for things like reading a license plate, etc.

True. I got Arlo Ultra and the 4K quality is not good. You won’t be able to read any license plate etc. it’s almost false advertising.

Does the Arlo Pro 4 xl record 24/7 ?

I have a couple of questions. How long does it take to fully charge the battery? Also, if you buy an extra battery can it be charged with supplied charging cord or do you have to buy a separate charger? Thanks

Steve -- LOVE your stuff. I have the Arlo Pro4 - 2 set up -- Front/Back of home - the Front camera doesn't stay in "color" in the evening. We have bright porch light, garage light and street light -- seems to be enough. When it sees motion - the spotlight comes on and it clearly records 2k in color. IS THERE A WAY TO KEEP THE LIVE STREAM IN COLOR? It works for the back camera (but maybe a bit more light?). And -- what do symbols on the left side display represent - (low light?)

Thanks Steve, very helpful. I have a follow-on request: in comparing the 3 cameras, it was really hard, to my untrained eye, to see a big difference (other than the lighting). But I suspect the situation might be different if I had to zoom in on something, whether day or night. The use case I’m thinking is if I have to identify a potential intruder, but they’re far away from the camera and you have to zoom in to get a proper ID. Can you maybe go back to the 6 cases (3 cameras each, day and night) and show how well they picked you up when you’re furthest away from the camera and had to zoom in to see your face? I’m betting the results would diverge markedly. If you have already done this in another video, would appreciate if you could point me towards it. Thanks! -Greg

I actually thought the essential had the best pic surprisingly. What I am really trying to find out though is how quick they pick up and then notify of motion. A few reviews I have seen is the live feed is extremely delayed, it doesn’t start recording until well after the motion has started. I am most interested in instant recording, quick notifications and low live feed lag

Does the Arlo pro 4 cameras work with the flood light and doorbell without a hub ?

Have two nest outdoor iq cameras one in front and one in back. Was gonna get the nest battery camera but given the reviews and complaints I decided not to. I just purchased the Arlo pro4 and would like to put it on my attached garage. One question…. Wanted to put it next to our motion lights, either above on the vinyl siding (not preferred) or next to it (wood trim) or underneath them. The only issue is the fact that the height is only 7 feet. Any suggestions?

I was confused with the Ultra 2 video being so poor, I'm almost changed my mind on which one to buy, but then you realized there interference from the other cameras, and re-recorded, thanks for taking the time. NO not buy if you want to use local storage. Arlo is terrible in forcing cloud subscriptions... I would not recommend.. they limit who can see the local recordings.. Customer service is terrible, try them out.. you decide... Buyer beware!! I regret this purchase. !!

Hi Steve just stumbled across your great video! I am grateful you did comparisons. I had just bought a Arlo package they had on sale at Visions for $329.00 Canadian lol The package came with 3 Essentials Cameras and the Arlo wire or wireless doorbell camera. I have only used one camera just to see how it looks and works. I gotta tell you It looked great at night in B&W and Color. I love the features! Next up is the doorbell and I'll see how that is. I didn't think the 2k or 4k Arlos were worth the money for a little extra pixels. I have owned the older Arlos that came with 4 cameras and the base station. The killer on those were the 4 batteries per camera was killing me $50.00 every 3 months if I was lucky. I'm going to see if the new cameras will work with the old base station. I hope so then mb I'll get a little more signal from my already lightning speed fiber package I got. In my opinion for the money you can't beat the Essentials! Let's not forget the cameras are really for your peace of mind. Even with footage of someone breaking when your not home. The police won't be able to figure out who the burglar was/is so really any camera is useless for the average home owner. I've experienced it first hand. I told the police I had video I even burned a disk for them of the guy; and it didn't even matter. He came right out and told me the odds of them catching the guy were slim to none ;but he thanked me for the video. He also said that the video is more for your insurance people Arrrg!

Hi there, I just purchased 3 of these camers. I love the idea of not using the hub. My question is...how will i be able to record 🤔 recordings without the hub? I'm already subscribed to one their plans.

I've had Arlo cameras since the original design with the 4 batteries going back to 2013 or so. Now have the Arlo Pro that I upgraded to in 2017 and now looking to add either a Pro 3 to my hub or go full boat with the Arlo Ultra 2...haven't decided which is the best route as the current set of 4 Pro's have skins with 2 extra battery with charger.

We just bought it used from my neighbor, he subscribed monthly so he cant offer any info on the size we should buy. I owned and still use arlo pro 2 camera system for a while. I wanted to upgrade last year but the subscription cost just annoys me. I ended up getting a wired system by Lorex. Dealing with the wires and setup are not fun but once the cameras are in place, the experience is far superior to the wireless cameras. far better resolution and checking out a live feed on the cameras doesn’t take 20 seconds to load. The best part is that I got an 8 camera system for around $400. I still use my Arlos indoors since I already had the system. Great for keeping an eye on my dog while I’m working.

Arlo has turned out to be garbage. Arlo recently notified me that my Pro will no longer be supported and I must buy their subscription 😮. The reason I bought an Arlo in the first place was their free support and storage. I even considered upgrading to a newer version for better video quality but with this new notice I feel like they stole my money 😂. Enjoy my money because never again Arlo 😂.

Found this in looking around. Its important to know who you are giving your money to. I was looking into Lorex as a possible option just to enterain the idea of maybe just going wired. Not no more lol. Why did Best Buy stop selling Lorex cameras? Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe's dropped Lorex (Dahua) products after IPVM and TechCrunch reached out to the retailers about them selling products from a manufacturer deemed a threat to US national security as well as being sanctioned for human rights abuses.Oct 25, 2021

Great video, was really helpful! Are you able to record 24/7? We are looking at getting the Ultra 2 for our small family-run retail shop. Is the video feed live, or does it take a few seconds to load normally.... like Canary cameras do etc? Also, I was a bit confused about the wifi. So do the ultra 2 not need wifi ? As our wifi is a bit slow in areas of our shop.

You can record 24/7 but only to the cloud and that's an extra monthly fee. You can watch live videos but there is about a 5-10 second delay. As for Wifi, you can connect the Essential and Pro 4 directly to your WiFi router, you don't need the Arlo base station. The Ultra 2 can only connect to the base and not directly to wifi. The base does have to be plugged into your home network to get an internet connection. Hope that clarifies what i said in the video. :)

My house is about 4000sqft and i have 6 arlo cameras connected thru one base station. Some of my cameras have a very low signal. Is there anyway for me to boost the signal on the base station?

Will the activity zone work with the newer Arlos powered by battery. The older Arlos work only if the camera is hooked to a 110 power supply.

I have a 4 cam Arlo 3 with floodlight and doorbell. So I have the arlo 3 base station. If I add in the 4 can it be used with that base or only on its own? Has the battery life gotten any better? I had the original arlo cameras and the battery life was horrible.

I have been using cheaper cameras like Blink and Wyze. I tried Eufy but found it wasn’t as good as the cheaper and the door bell camera only lasted about a week. Retuned them. I just bought the Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight 3 camera bundle. I had high hopes but after an afternoon of changing settings it isn’t any better then the other two and Wyze outdoor cam works better. None of them sees a person most of the time but loves vehicles even when you set it not to see the road. I’ll be sending this bundle back to the store. I’ll stick with the Wyze over all I’ve tested. The cheaper Wyze doorbell works better for me then the others including a Ring. I’m not into saving videos but want to keep it until I’m ready. I enjoy your videos. Thanks.

Steve - I am considering an Arlo system, either Essential or Pro 4 (I don't need 4K). Couple of questions. I have read multiple horror stories of if the camera loses it's connection to either the router or the hub, it does not reconnect - you have to physically remove power from the camera and restart it - this is a non started for me if it's true - since some of my cameras will be very high mounted. I did read one post on the Arlo forum saying a firmware update fixed it, but there was a user that said they had three identical cameras, and after the update - one would automatically reconnect, but the other 2 did not. Also - it seems to be true that in order to do Activity Zones or the 3 second skip back, the unit must have AC power. Where I'm mounting mine won't have AC - I plan to add Solar. And posts say it has to be AC.

What can you show /tell me about these cameras and a wifi extender?

Nice comparisons. As an FYI, your night views clearly show that your 4PRO camera has major issues. In the comparison, look at the black cover over the table or the darkened upstairs windows. There is a major noise/grain issue with that camera. Could be a one-off problem or a design defect. Take a look.

I have a question. How many cameras can I have together. I now have the blink camera and I can do up to 10. Does the arlo work better because it doesn’t need a hub? And because it doesn’t need a hub how fast does my internet need to be? Thanks 🙏

The biggest drawback to the Arlo cameras that use the XL batteries is that you can’t buy a separate charger. They can only be charged in the camera housing with Arlo’s (very) proprietary charging cable. My batteries run out in about a week, and I’ve had to use one of the cameras exclusively for charging batteries.

Mine out front run out in about 2 weeks, because of the motion it is constantly picking up. We have kids, cars, neighborhood kids, and a ton of motion comes from the garden flag out front. Cameras out back last a lot longer. But yes when they’re no longer supported it does suck. I’m looking at upgrading, not sure if I want ultra or pro 4

In my experience it’s much easier to run em’ with solar power. They stay charged, indefinitely.

So while watching your video you say that I could hook up my Pro 4 cameras to my old base station? I was talking to Arlo tech support and I asked that question and they said no. But I still don't understand about the firmware update and the $149 fee they want to charge

Great review! Wow, talk about complicated! I own an Arlo system and just bought two extra cameras and just learned I do not get any free storage for these new cameras. A total waste of money! I was just about to buy a new system for my kids for Christmas and now realize it would be a huge mistake. Saved me $900! Thanks again!

I can't officially answer for a Mac but, i just tested this on my PC. I was able to bring up a live view but it didn't have the little 4K icon next to the Live icon in the top left corner like i see in the app. So i'm going to say No, the live stream on their web portal does not stream in 4K.

Hi. Steve. I just purchased the Arlo Essential. I have 3 Arlo Pro cameras My question is: one of my camera pro is far from the home hub and always has a very weak wi-fi signal. I setup the essential and the signal is still weak but I added it to my home hub station. If I setup the essential alone without connecting to the home hub give me a better connection. Can you recommend something to extent the signal?

I presently have Eufy S40 cameras covering my home and to date I'm quite happy with these cameras. I'm in the midst of starting a new home build and thinking what cameras I should install that don't require cloud service and would like wired to power so I'm not worrying about charging these cameras when I'm away for an extended period. I've looked but cannot find any reviews on your youtube channel comparing non battery type cameras. Any thoughts?

I had the Arlo ultra 4k, I must say they are good the long rang at night it not that good, I switch to Eufy 2k even if they are 2K the spotlight are amazing night distant and color plus all local recording. Eufy is a go for me can't wait for the solo s40

Really appreciate your videos-great information. Where I live, the temperatures can range occasionally from -15F in the winter to +100F in the summer. If possible, in future videos, could you please include minimum and maximum outdoor weather temperatures in which the Arlo would work? I’d appreciate it.

@@SteveDOES I would be interested in something similar. I am in Minnesota where in the winter, with wind chill temps, it can get down to -60 degrees F. In the summer we could sometimes even see a high in the low 100s but usually common to see mid 80s for average.

Same temps here. That’s what concerned me. It’s says -4 and we reach -15 easy here. Even the feels like reaches that even when the temps are at just 1 or something like that. If it made my snowblower act up I wonder what it’ll do to this.

I never thought about a gutter mount for camera and solar panel. Is this something arlo sells or a 3rd party mount?

“Question” when there is no motion do these camera still record video. 24/7 record that can be played back so if motion doesn’t pick nothing up you can go back and look at footage. If so how many days can you go back and look at full day recordings ? Wanting to buy this system the 4K ultra cams. This is a big deal for me to have all day recordings so I can go back and look at. Plz reply thanks !

It hold the video 30 days but if need it longer save it to your phone or to a usb flash drive I have videos save on my phone for a year now
