My first and favorite hostel experience was in Australia when a couple in another bed stopped having really loud sex because they realized they both had a mutual love of a German football team (I think it was Bayern Munich). Neither of them were from Germany. They continued talking about the football team for hours; their discussed scores or particular games, the players, everything. I hope it worked out for them, they were literally perfect for each other. It was super weird overhearing it all whilst trying to get to sleep, but it was still hilarious haha

Hi Mari! Great video...we stayed in NZ for 6 weeks in 2018 and used YHA all over both islands. The one in Wellington was super nice, like a nice hotel. We stayed in a twin ensuite and it was full of amenities. The YHA hostels in NZ are better than anyplace on earth! We also joined YHA for $25/year to receive the 10% discount every time we booked a room. Oh, and there was a school group on our floor, but I put on my best teacher (retired now) voice and the kids went straight to their rooms. 😆

I stayed in several different hostels several times, but It was for school trips and voluntary organization, usually for 2-3 days. And, well, it was nice and all, there are enough room and beds for everyone (usually 3-4 people in one room, of same gender, of course), plus shared bathroom/shower (though only room for one, so it's taking turns). Yeah, there were some noisy people here and there, but nothing really to spoil my experience. As for free time, sometimes parties, sometimes malls and shopping. In short, it was nice, nothing really too fancy or too sleepy.

So far in Thailand, I spent the first few weeks in shared dorm hostels which worked out well in Bangkok, for only $6 a night. As a solo traveler, I met so many people from all over the world in such a short span of time. It's a great way to meet other travelers and find new friends to do things with. Now that I am on Koh Samui Island, I have been splurging a bit and staying in a private room by the beach for $15 a night. After living in a car for almost three years, I am really enjoying a private room, real bed, my own bathroom, refrigerator and my own AC that I can set however I like. It's totally worth the extra money to be right next to the beach and to have a place where I can just leave all my stuff set up when I head out on adventures for the day. I wash my laundry by hand in the sink, and that works much better in a private room too. In a dorm setting, you have to do a little planning about what you can leave out and what you have to lock up. I prefer the top bunk because it easier to leave out clothes, or have them drying without people trying to sit on your bed all the time. You have to think about the times you are coming into or out of the room and limits on sounds and the space you have. So, it takes a bit more effort to stay in them. But the dorm style hostels are nice and work well, especially when you're in transit to new areas or destinations and just need a quick place to crash for the night, or want to socialize a bit. I've seen people from age 18 to 70 staying in dorm rooms, but I've heard some places have age restrictions. Haven't seen any of those yet, though. Cheers!

New Zealand has the best hostels and the nicest people. I especially like the smaller places with independent travelers. The big bus tour groups tend to congregate together. Research online and then book direct. Get a Countdown grocery card for deals on food to cook yourself. Intercity or Skip buses (budget arm of Intercity) are a good deal. Mari is the ultimate NZ expert! Thanks.

Hi Mari, Thanks for sharing your interesting and informative video. I have never stayed in a hostel, but I have visited a couple of them. A friend of mine was actually staying in one here in Melbourne some years ago. Believe it or not, he was actually from Christchurch as well, which is quite a coincidence. That locker is similar to the locker I had at work years ago when living in Sydney. I have often wondered if first arriving in the dark late at night with no lights on and everyone sleeping, how do you find your bed? I suppose, I could always poke around and the bed where no one said "ouch", I guess that would be mine!!! Okay, you have sold me on the hostel private room, when can I come??? LOL. Love the idea of keeping all your needed things in a bag. I will definitely keep that suggestion in mind when travelling in the future. Actually, before you ever came to a hostel, you should have contacted me and I could have sent you a link to this video...er...just thinking, I would have probably needed to rent a time machine to actually do that successfully!!! Anyway, wishing you all the best. Robert.

I will be travelling solo and I need to be on a budget. So if I can hostel, I really want to hostel. But I have challenges. 1) I'm 6'2" and about 240 lbs. Frankly those beds look too small and maybe even too weak. 2) I'm 57, I use a CPAP and on long busy days I need a cane. 3) I like live music in bars and pubs so have been known to stay out late. I think everyone involved would be a *_LOT_* happier, if I had a private room. How can I be assured to have access to a private room?

  • @mari.johnson

Hi! I can understand your concerns. If you want a private room, just make sure to book one when you make your reservation. Sometimes they have shared bathrooms (usually cheaper) and sometimes they have them in the rooms. The hostel website should give you all of that information. Happy travels!!

Are there any age limits for staying at a hostel?

Most youth hostels do have some restrictions on how old you have to be to check in: it’s mostly in the range of 16-40 years old in most but not all youth hostels. Other standard hostels don’t have an age limit and if they do they tend to be quite lenient on these restrictions
