Wow, I wonder that anyone in recording drums can be soo Dumb that He/she doesn't know the Polarity pattern of Hyper cardioid or Cardioid microphone. By the way, Put whatever microphone on toms you want, In the end, You need to do Extensive Editing to make them sound more present and Precise, both, in terms of frequency and Amplitude, So the best thing is recording the best possible sound of toms with whatever microphone you have and then edit the Bleed out of tom tracks. (Generally, when toms are played, cymbals and sometime Hi-Hat are silent, So, editing gives life to toms by minimizing phase and Combfiltering issues.)
