I bet band saw boxes would sell better at shows if you made them into letters. Like an A, D, O, double drawer B, Q, Etc. Etc. Ppl would but a letter if their last name started with that letter I bet.

It's an additional step, but for gluing on templates, I first put down a layer of continuous masking or painter's tape. Then you just put the adhesive on top of the tape and the template goes on the top. When you're done, you just peel up the tape and never have to deal with the paper directly adhered to the wood.

Great video!! Only thing I might add, is to place felt dots on the bottom of the drawers to get better spacing around the drawer. Also add some on the bottom of the box to keep them from scratching the furniture they are place on.

This is a good video filled with good advice. I would like to add one comment based on extensive experience with bandsawn boxes: It is far easier to sand the inside of the box before you glue the back on IF you are not covering those surfaces with cloth or flocking. Many thanks!

I bought your band saw box book about a year ago and made some pretty cool boxes for my two nieces and they were a big hit. I had one in the shape of an H for Hannah with Baltic birch cabinet grade plywood two 3/4" pieces glued together with Mahogany on the outsides two drawers. Shannon got one shaped like an S with three drawers made with 8 quarter white oak and Purple heart on the outsides. Green flocking made them look great. For the pulls I simply used a plug cutter on the cutoff waste of each glue up.

Really great video because you went in depth and explained the detail parts. I think the 1/8th inch round-over makes all the difference, but the flocking really sets them apart. Also, thanks for adding the bit at the end about selling at craft fairs and such. Good info for me down the road! Cheers!

We recently made our first bandsaw box, and watched your video of the 'Chicago' bandsaw box as a guide, so thanks! Ours was in the shape of a 'Q' to hold Q-tips, so we know what a major pain it is to cut out and sand these. Yours are very beautiful, and we love the mix of the different woods. So nice of Samuel L Jackson to make a cameo in your video too! 😉

Either blue tape on the face of the wood, before affixing pattern with 3m spray glue, or using Goo Gone after as an adhesive remover; I've found the blue tape pre-prep is the easiest.

    1. I have your Bandsaw Box book and I love it. 2. That happy little mistake that you covered up with the dowel insert looks terrific - the addition of a circular decoration within the circular design looks as though it was always meant to be that way. 3. That Pulp Fiction cut scene almost caused me to spit coffee at my screen from laughter.

Here's a tip for masking off the edges before painting the flocking adhesive. Instead of blue painters tape, use fine line tape. It's used in the sign and auto painting trades, is available at most sign suppliers and Amazon, comes in many widths from 1/16" on up, and the best part is it's flexible and slightly stretchy so it is very easy to follow curves. It will cut masking time to a fraction, and seal better than blue painters tape.

I agree 100% with the website move to Squarespace. I did webdev for 20+ years and it just makes sense. I've tried VM appliances that are prepatched quasi and still incremental patches are still required. Also cross site scripting security patches ever updating. I guess that's why we do woodworking ;) Great content & projects. Just built a home cloud using Raspberry Pi for music files & Solidworks, and image files. I mirror a 256gig thumb drive with an SSD to protect against data loss.

If you have a drill press with a big enough chuck, you can sand and polish the aluminium all the way from satin to a mirror finish. Doesn't take that long either, but you need to have good ventilation and wear a mask if you're doing a few of them. I learned how big a headache aluminium dust can give you the hard way. Surprisingly nasty stuff.

I hope there are projects for a very small bandsaw. My steers & sawtooth Crapsman won't even take a 4x4. It only opens to 3 in. I cannot afford a better one, unless I find a super bargain at a yard sale, like where most of my tools came from. I might be able to make a bandsaw box out of a 2x2. I did cut a Victorian chair out of a 2x2. It turned out better than I expected for my first band saw project. But it still needs sanding and finish. Right after I got that at a yard sale I had put new tires on it. The cost of bandsaw tires is ridiculous! Luckily I found out you can put vacuum cleaner belts on them. I need small projects for my small bandsaw, or a super bargain on a larger one. 😃

I'm usually pretty instinctively safe about doing things, but I've never cut a round piece in the band saw (cause it's never come up) and I'm about a thousand percent sure you probably just saved a lot of fingers by taking those few seconds to teach that simple safety tip! (and less face it, blood stains probably decrease the value of the piece)

I cover the wood surface with masking tape before gluing templates on. It makes removal a lot easier.
