Hey Haku, first off thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I’m just getting into drawing with the purpose of eventually tattooing and I haven’t had a good intro to Japanese art that wasn’t just a straight Japanese history lesson. I like these a lot. Maybe for the third you can talk on the different elements used in the line work and the overall composition of a piece.

Your 2 videos are very informative. I liked them both alot. I hope you continue the series and go into: Seasons, what animals go with each season, what plants to use. Same with elements such as earth, water and air, what creatures are more suitable. Known pairings, masks origins and meanings, mythological creatures and lastly, known heroes/characters and their stories.

Great vid! Helped me refine the composition and style of my leg sleeve I've been working on a bit more. I'd love to see you talk about the placement of subject matter, pairing the centerpiece with appropriate enviromental/seasonal Gakubori designs, and the different types of wind bar patterns since I've seen a mix of wavy, straight, and curved styles of wind bars.

These comments are really good! I like that he gave the term for the background and the edges. All the symbolism behind the background elements and like secondary subjects are tied into zen philosophy and nature. Constant change is and impermanence of life. That being said, the meanings are very lose and kinda felt but not grasped so I personally have a hard time letting go of the need to have a concrete definition and meaning. The tiger reps courage and the dragon, depending on its color has a few different meanings but they are never thought of a monsters. If you pair the dragon with the tiger, that has its own meaning. Tiger becomes the feminine energy and represents the house hold and the dragon is the masculine and reps the emperor. The balance and mutual respect between the two needs to be balance to live in peace… something that I’ve never known to exist being from the west

Could you continue this series please?! It’s awesome! Maybe what the motifs mean. And more history maybe. Like how the dragon consist of the head of a mule body of a snake antlers from a deer and talons from an eagle etc etc.. also could you show some examples how a tattoo is continued? Like how to build on with background ? I’ve been tattooing realism for 13 years but started getting in to traditional Japanese now. Tired of tattoos that don’t stand time :D

you should make a video explaining the stories behind the mythical creatures and how they connect. for example, koi fish turning into dragon. in addition their seasons too like how koi fish are always displayed with sakura and not other plants because of its seasons. i think this would be very helpful for a culturally accurate piece as i am looking to get my first sleeve and having it be an irezumi piece that could tell a personal and cultural story. if you have the time to talk i would love to converse about this if you aren’t planning to make a video on this topic.

It’d be great to hear about what your experiences of tattoos in Japan are like compared to in Australia. Eg do you see a mix of styles like we see here in Aus? Or is Japanese style the most popular style over there? Are there many Japanese people over there with vintage western style tattoos? What do Japanese people you have spoken to think of westerners getting Japanese style tattoos ? what are things you noticed in Japan regarding tattoos that are different than here. Do people show them as much as people do here ? are they as common as here ? Just answering those questions is another vid :)
