    Chevrolet fixed the Steering / column lock for 2001 C5 Automatic. Only applicable if you have a 1997-2000 (amy transmission) or 2001-2004 manual transmission. If you have a 2001-2004 you don't need to worry about the column lock issues, chevy replaced the ELC in 2001 for automatics.

    97-00 are the years to avoid because of the EBCM module issues. The HP difference between 97-00 was minimal and mostly due to the LS6 intake manifold. I'd also avoid 2004 cars that came with the magnetic shocks due to the fact that they tend to leak, are very expensive and cannot be deleted electronically like the 03 once can.

    “A” for effort and great editing and commentary…but you missed the mark on quite a few things. Keep up the good work and growing your knowledge on the C5. I love seeing younger guys and gals getting into the C5 game. But want to help clear some things up for viewers willing to read this TLDR response…. The EBCM cannot be repaired on the pre ‘01 models is true. However, failure rate is not nearly as significant as this video or comments below are indicating. Used EBCMs are easily sourced (not cheap but easy to find). You can also upgrade to ‘01 plus but it’s not a simple swap. The column lock is easily addressed with an “LMC5” which wires into the passenger kick panel fuse box in 10 minutes. The steering locks when people don’t drive their cars or trickle charge when not in use and allow the parasitic draw from electronics to deplete the battery and engage the VAT. The LMC5 will override the locking mechanism even with a low battery. $50. The harmonic balancer issue is also overblown. But it does occur due to the OEM Delco balancer being two piece bonded rubber. Easily remedied with a powerbond or AFI one piece for a few hundred $. If you can’t work on your own cars don’t buy one that’s 20 plus years old. The leaky battery issue was due to early production side post batteries prone to leak. Those leak prone batteries are no longer in production and the previous owners had them replaced 20 years ago with more dependable side post batteries. 90% of the electronic gremlins impacting a C5 are caused by corroded grounds. Keep the grounds clean and use dialectic grease. The difference from the Z06 to the coupe or FRC is not just 50hp. The Z06 has a different transmission (M12), thinner lightweight windshield (‘02 up), #243 heads, different salt filled valve springs, titanium exhaust and improved suspension. Also lightweight wheels and larger tires that are not run craps from the factory.

Which I built two motors for myself and then had a speed shop build one for me. My brothers also have C5s as well as Vipers and classic muscle cars. So we wrench on our own stuff. @@gotmylkany advice for someone looking to buy a c6 with low mileage? Things i should look out for before purchasing or should i pay someone to come out for an inspection of the car before i go through with buying?

  • @gotmylk

    @gotmylk

    6 ай бұрын

    @@mass9213 I'm not as familiar with the C6 as I am the C5 but if you are new to either model it's ALWAYS in your best interest to have someone familiar with these model Corvettes assist you with the inspection. The C6 is more like a C5.5 than it is a redesigned model. My reccomendations as a hobbyist and C5 enthusiast is to drive both models before making a purchase. C5 is a much sexier car in my opinion, the LS1 and LS6 are more reliable than LS2, the C5 has more passenger hip and head room (I'm tall and big) otherwise I would have owned at least 1 C6 and not 3 C5s. The C6 is smaller inside and out, a bit more nimble, makes more power than the LS1 and LS6 (torque being the big advantage LS2 over LS6), but the LS2 ('05 to '07 C6) is a motor I would steer clear of, especially if performance modifications are a likely path for you. Which I personally always mod my sports cars and hot rods... would only opt for a C6 from 2008 to 2013 with an LS3. The LS3 is a fantastic engine and by far better than the LS1 & LS6 for power and just as reliable. But the LS3 powered C6's demand a higher premium and rightfully so.

    The 01 thru 06 vettes had the LS6 intake manifold was the biggest difference in power. Also, a lot of people don’t know that most vettes made after 01 had LS6 blocks aswell. An easy way to check is to look at the top front of the passenger side of the block. If you don’t have a bullseye cast mark, you’ve got an LS6 block. The weak differential case and free float design of the drivetrain are a weak point which can cause wheel hop and grenade the diff. I’ve got an HCI 01 with the T56 putting out around 450WHP. Very fun cars to drive

    I've not read all the comments, but w/regard to the harmonic balancer the cost is likely to be twice your estimate to replace. Clutch slave cylinder failure or any issue with the torque tube requires yanking the diff and tranny, so a cost of $2k is more realistic. At least if it's done by a skilled Corvette shop... Nice looking coupe, by the way. Also, look into the LMC5 module for the column lock issue.

    Look up LCM5 to fix the column lock. you don't have to take the column/ignition apart to fix this if it occurs. The bump in HP for the 01's and up is from the LS3 manifold (not the exhaust) that became standard equip on the LS1's in Late 01-04 on the standard models.

    The oil use issues can simply be fixed for $10 by buying a new PCV valve. Everyone that hates on the 97-2000 are just ignorant. All of the FEW cons aren't a big deal there are TONS of salvage C5's to get whatever parts you need at extremely reasonable prices, and you will pay max a few grand even if you encounter ALL of the problems. And being that it's a 20+ year old car almost all of the issues have already been fixed by previous owners.

    Cool video, and you are on the right path. 97-00 are the years you want to avoid because of the ABS module that cant be fixed. The convertible is actually 1 pound heavier than that stock C5. The best year to get is an 03 or 04, they worked out all the kinks in those years, but 03 wins because the fuel pump isn't in the fuel tank like it is in the 04. They have bypass options for the steering wheel that will address those issues. Also agree with the comments below, Manual transmission is the way to go in these cars. One last thing, your car is sweet. I have a black convertible, and will be blacking everything out like you did on yours (vettelights). Maybe do a video on the LEDs you put in the headlights.

Maybe 5-10 years and the +01ABS Control Unit will also be ""Unfixable"". Beside that ABS Module is always Fixable, for all Corvette Years. We only talk about the Control Unit, wich is not the Module. I personally think the soft lines of the C5 give it a sleek design that has only gotten better with age, and at 405hp at 3,100 pounds even 20 years later this car is still in the mix with the performance of modern sports cars because they're all heavier now. I see you got SLP loudmouths as well but only with CAI, how loud is it just at IDLE (warm, not cold start)? I have SLP loudmouths, CAM & heads, LT headers and CAI…let me tell you how OBNOXIOUSLY loud it is at idle alone and at WOT I compared to your clip, it is def much louder with CAM/heads and LT headers, and I even have high flow cats, without CATS it should be illegal with my set up, just trust me.

The real Hassle is limiting your options to only 2001+ and not getting near as good of a car because your options become so limited. Unless you live in like FL TX or CA where the inventory is high, going for 2001+ is very hard to find the right price and right car without over paying. And 90% of the time you will pay more for that 2001+ model then you would on all the extra MINOR expenses that come with the older models, and that's if you were unlucky enough to get those problems in the first place, and that the previous owners haven't fixed them already.
