Everything Wrong With The Phantom of the Opera in 17 Minutes or Less

Фильм және анимация

The Phantom of the Opera is certainly a movie. And there is "singing" at times. The plot is pretty darn confusing. I guess people love the original stage show and music so much they don't care. But we care! We count sins, dammit!
Next week: '90s comedy sins & recent action-ish sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

According to French history and the Phantom of the Opera book, the underground of the opera house is actually a flooded dungeon/torture chamber from one of the wars France was involved in. The idea was the music of the operahouse would mask the sounds of screaming prisoners and no one would suspect the operahouse of having a dungeon in the first place.

Part of it was simply a large cistern during construction with side areas for storing the building materials. Large projects like that still took several years to complete at the time. Once they no longer served a purpose and were abandoned, they were used as munitions storage occasionally by the French military when times of quiet stockpiling became necessary.

Exactly. Especially when the black and white effect (which in of itself is genius, since it portrays the future and not the past) transitions to color (even though the story takes place in the past and not the future) is genius and very eye-catching. It's one of my favorite parts of the movie.

You're asking if the mask is attached to the phantoms hair and why it always looks so good.... it's a wig, dude. The phantom wears a wig through most of the movie. I can actually tell you why the masquerade is held in the lobby: it’s a French theatre they were made for socialising, so much so that a lot of patrons only showed up before to be seen mingling in the lobby and then left before the performance... so the lobby is actually the best place to hold any sort of festivities as it’s literally made for that

@@Kindiah I mean - it's a gothic story. Yeah he was abusive, he was also, you know, a mass murderer, a scammer, and a blackmailer - which is the real ugliness that repels Christine, the real death that pursuits him, the real tragedy he is redeemed from by his final act of actual true selfless love... But it is all romantic as well - at the very least in that more original sense lol It was never meant to be realistic in any way, or like, a template for relationships, that's for sure.

Phantom of the Opera was my favorite movie when I was a kid. I must have watched it dozens of times. In 2011, as a teenager, I watched the proshot anniversary at Royal Albert Hall and I was so shook. I couldn’t believe how much better it was, and how much more raw and emotional the story was. Now it’s really hard for me to go back and watch the movie because it just doesn’t live up. But I’ll always have nostalgia for it, and I still basically have the entire script memorized

I can't believe they missed the biggest sin of them all. The guy who is portraying Christine's father, the picture that she lights a candle for, is Ramin Karimloo. AKA one of the greatest Phantoms of all time. He's in a role where he doesn't even have a line, but Gerard Butler, the guy with no practically no training is given the singing role. Even if you had dubbed Gerard Butler with Karimloo, that would have been amazing and blurred realities, as the voice of the Phantom is a phantom but is also Christine's father. Given that Christine believes her father is the phantom, what a way to manipulate her to sing to her using her father's voice and the fact that the Phantom is a skilled ventriloquist and illusionist. Don't get me wrong, it's creepy, but a big part of Christine's psychology is that she is vulnerable because of the loss of her father, and she already believes it could be her father. In fact, start out with Karimloo singing all the Phantom's lines, then as the story progresses and Christine catches on to the Phantom's psyche more and more, the singing becomes a blend of Karimloo and Butler. But every time the Phantom speaks instead of sings, it's Butler's voice, and by the end it is only Butler's voice, except for the tough notes which are Karimloos, almost like Christine is seeing through the illusion

This movie was the first Phantom production I ever saw and it made me fall in love with the music. Years later, I watched the 25th anniversary stage production livestream in the cinema, where the entire cast and orchestra is absolutely killing it. Now I can't watch this movie without cringing (I don't blame the cast, they're all great actors who did their best) but it still has a special place in my heart because it introduced me to the show.

I really love the observation he made pointing out that the film version of Christine does NOT have an operatic voice compared to Carlotta. In the stage performance of Phantom, at least when Sarah Brightman was playing Christine, she had presence and the volume an operatic soprano should have (making it more reasonable that they should choose to give her the role when Carlotta walks out). Also the amount of time, money, renown, advertisement, costume creating (being made to fit Carlotta), they ABSOLUTELY would have gone after her and tried everything to get her back rather than just "yeah, ok, random stage extra/chorus member your voice is fine and you're pretty." Not to mention, did they really not have an understudy/standby already lined up for Carlotta's role? But then again, that's more a problem with Lloyd Weber's libretto for it, or maybe the book its based on that I've never read. But still...

As a Character, the musical of course makes her 2D. Perfect but naiive orphan who just blinks her pretty eyes and waffles around in the opera house. I've no doubt that the book gives her at least something else to think/say/do.

But the play establishes that he was an adult when Mdm. Giry met him.

The reason Raoul and the police don't rush the stage during Point of No Return is they didn't plan for the Phantom to physically be on stage with Christine once he is they are effectively in a hostage situation. They don't want to risk hurting or getting Christine hurt trying to shoot him. So they spend the bulk of the scene trying to figure out what to do. But for Raoul as Patrick Wilson himself said in an interviewm that scene is also the moment when he realises the Phantom and Christine are also in love and it's heartbreaking for him. He's never seen their chemistry in person.

Actually it's reasonably common for repertory houses like the Paris Opera to stage different operas almost every day of the week. Usually though its due to stage crew working tirelessly through the night to strike down and store sets - and the lake underneath the opera house was historically used for barges to come through from the River Seine and take the previous evenings set into storage elsewhere in the city (probably near the docks).
