    For future watchers: I stand by the content (and comedy) in this video, but not the format. This was an early entry in my learning to analyze media and express my critique, so I did it in a way that was, at the time, familiar and fun to me. I've since moved on to better/original/traditional video essay formats. I hope you like it anyway.

    1:02 To find potential magical girls? Since teleport wouldn't help you to find them... 8:09 It's literal. The witch came from Sayaka's SOUL gem (aka Grief Seed). This witch is Sayaka's distorted soul, so it wouldn't be weird if she unconsciously stored her memories there. Homura explained the feeling of being a witch in the Rebellion as "can't remember anything but regret and glimmers of light", so it's possibly Sayaka's memories are still there, but she's overwhelmed by hatred. 11:00 *cough* Social anxiety, low self-esteem, heart problems *cough* 11:03 It's still alive there, or probably that girl didn't make a contract/didn't become a witch/... (each timeline has minor differences) 12:09 Sayaka probably didn't make a contract in that timeline. Mami didn't die too early, so Kyoko couldn't intervene. 13:46 She's too emotional damaged to do that, so she's just crying and calling herself an idiot instead. Madoka still believed in hope, so she could still feel the pain. 14:34 Each timeline has its own (minor) differences, Sayaka's mentality in this timeline isn't an exception. Madoka wasn't her best friend? Mami was alive? Kyosuke played piano instead of violin? Hitomi cheated on Sayaka without giving her a chance? Or did she end up with an unhappy relationship with Kyosuke? No one knows. 16:15 Maybe they did have more than 1 Grief seed but ended up using all of it in the battle? Also, the last Grief seed was Sayaka's, so Madoka probably kept it really carefully. 16:30 In the sub version, she said "Homura-chan, you SAID you can go back in time, right?" 16:36 Homura didn't just exactly time (because it's technically impossible, the grandfather paradox), but went to a new timeline instead. This Madoka will still exist and destroy things in that timeline. 19:04 Considering Homura's time leaps made Madoka more powerful because it revolved around her, it could also boost Walpurgisnacht since the time leaps also revolved around it. So... 19:21 Madoka just became a magical girl, she wouldn't know how to control her tremendous magic right away. She probably took more than needed, ended up using all of her power in the first shot. 20:01 There's many of them hiding anywhere, looking for new magical girls. 22:52 What if some of them wished things like "End WW2" or "Someone invents a thing that can ______" or "Make ______ the president of ______". That would certainly leads to civilization. 25:20 Well... magic? Or some kind of futuristic device that allows you to display your memories? Or you're probably right, it's in her head. 27:31 Their bodies are like weapons now, and when your weapon got stuck and you couldn't use it anymore, and there was some giant bitch attacking , it's a real problem. 28:02 She just explained the reason earlier in despair. 28:10 Yes she is. She's the reason why this timeline existed (and this Madoka existed). 28:37 She could've done that, but she still has to become a magical girl. So if Incubators never came to Earth and there's a magical girl on Earth, wouldn't it be a paradox? What if she got erased from existence or the timeline divided into 2 other timelines (one with magical girl Madoka and one with a happy life). Would creating a different, happy timeline help this timeline? No. 29:46 Through every timeline and every universes. Which means infinity and beyond. 30:20 She took away their corrupted souls (aka witches), not took away their wishes. So that shouldn't affect anything... 30:40 Why wasn't he? Madoka wished to destroy witches before they were born, which means "take away those girls' corrupted souls and bear the despair for them. So of course Madoka's soul gem would be filled with despair from countless magical girls. 30:53 It's not though, since Madoka killed it and rewrote the universe seconds later. 31:58 The Goddess designed her own outfit in seconds. 31:30 It is. Seeing your will to live and rewind the time for 12 years erased herself from existence is much worse than dying. 31:53 She's giving Sayaka the chance to erase the wish and become human again, Sayaka refused and her last wish was to see Kyosuke's performance, so Madoka tagged along. Also they're spirits now, they can wear uniforms if they want to. 32:06 It sounds like an ancient traditional story of magical girls... probably like some kind of religion. 32:13 Kyoko used to look up at Mami as her senior in another timeline but they broke up after Kyoko changed. Kyubey could approach Sayaka for many ways, other than that time at the mall. 32:23 In another spinoff manga, Madoka took away Homura's time power (probably to make sure she wouldn't rewind time again) and replaced it with something like "memory power" and her bow. 32:40 Children can see many things adults can't (like animals). Madoka to Tatsuya is like an imaginary friend, not a sister (he drew Madoka in her magical girl form). Tatsuya will forget about her soon, as he grew up. 33:30 Madoka hugged Homura for the last time, then they're apart. Homura returned to the real world while Madoka went to the concept world. And she erased witches, not magical girls. Because witches are gone, the girls need another thing to fight, and that would be the wraiths. 34:00 You could say it's a happy ending for everyone (because Madoka bears everyone's despair) except Madoka and Homura. Madoka spent eternity fighting witches and bearing despair of the every other magical girl and being forgotten by every one except Homura, because she made a wish to save others. Homura made a wish to save Madoka, so she spent 12 years looping and seeing Madoka's deaths and after that, living in a world where she's the only one who remembered Madoka and isolating herself (and in the end betrayed Madoka to become a demon). (I just have too much free time...)

    Can you don't Thanks. Though there are some more. Sayaka’s a mermaid because remember the story of the mermaid. Kyoko sees no point in living anymore and kills the despaired witch, that’s why she kills herself. In a game, Kyoko dies if she knows Sayaka died. And they didn’t point out the symbolism in the drawings, that’s one big sin, because it’s important. Actually, I might complete your commentary later ^^’

    Oh yeah the rebellion plot is HARD to understand, because magical shenanigans makes for a horrible plot-device, who knew? So basically, here's the rules of Rebellion set by Madoka: 1. All Magical Girls who fell into despair (Became witches) were sent into the Magical Girl Valhalla, where they watched over Causality. 2. All Magical Girls who believed in hope were stripped off of their Magical Girl power and became normal girls that will continue on with their lives as if becoming a Magical Girl never happened. 3. This is all only happening in one dimension. So witches can still be made in a closed-off pocket dimensions. 4. Yes, rule number 2 contradicts rule number 1 because plot, that's a sin. So the plot is: 1. Kyubey wants to make Homura a witch by sending her to a pocket dimension that doesn't adhere to Madoka's rules. 2. The end has Homura basically taking Madoka back into the past using her power to split apart Madoka. That means Homura is taking back Madoka to the past where she supposedly doesn't exist and became a sort of manifested system in it because plot. 3. Hey, at least Kyubey got kicked in the dick several times, so it's fiiiiine.

    The opening was pretty much understandable, and I even liked it. And the ending I managed to understand after looking up some explanations. The part that makes me not want to do it is that very near the end (about when Madoka shows up to save the day), I realized that I had, like, no memory of the last forty-five minutes or so of the movie. It completely passed me by without my comprehending it. Maybe that's on the movie, or maybe that's on me. I dunno. Makes me nervous about covering it. Plus, after this business with the copyright strikes, I don't want to touch anime on this channel ever again. >.>

    I feel like you have many things wrong here, so let me slide in a few things. The plot of rebellion. After the events of eternal, the incubators grew increasingly curious as to why soul gems disappear when they can't be purified anymore. After homura explained the witch universe to them, they went about with an experiment. They waited until homura was at the edge of despair, just when her soul gem was ready to disappear, and kidnapped her. They placed her soul gem in a place where the law of cycles could not reach it, and waited for homura to build the witch labyrinth that she had explained in the epilogue of eternal. They made it so homura could bring people into her labyrinth, but the victims could not escape. Homura, unknowingly, created her own mitakihara city, one where she and her friends could continue to live happily in ignorant bliss. However, homura started to see through her own tricks and lies, and began to seek answers. Once she realised she was the source of the labyrinth itself, she also realised what the incubators were intending to do. The incubators, being the little bastards they are, intended to capture the law of cycles once she tried to set homura free. They were going to use her to make magical girls turn into witches so they could harvest more energy. Homura knew this, and knew that if madoka had gotten away, the incubators would have done the same experiment again and again and again, forcing madoka to venture into these traps to save the suffering girls until the incubators captured her. So, homura decided to take action to keep madoka safe. She had intended to die within her labyrinth at first in the hopes the incubators would find it pointless; but when it didn't work, homura became desperate. Her desperation caused her to tear madoka into two beings: the law of cycles (locked safely away), and madoka herself, who got to live a normal life with her loved ones. Homura became a demon (more of a goddess) that ruled over the universe that she took over. She forced the incubators to work to harvest curses as punishment for their sins, and kept close watch over madoka to keep her from enduring so much despair for others like she had once. TL;DR - homura takes over the universe and changes its laws to keep incubators from taking advantage of magical girls, while also keeping madoka safe from being used as a puppet.

    I always wondered if Homura's parents or guardians ever noticed and reacted to her personality changes; with each timeline and remembering what happens, I would think that, to her parents when Homura wakes up in the reset timeline, would see her go from a timid girl to waking up completely different and thus treat her differently because of that. I feel like it could have been a great plotpoint that could have added more tension and would have been too important to look over.

    7:46 well, the reason sayaka's witch seems very mermaid-like is because of a few reasons. The original story of the little mermaid is very tragic. A mermaid fell in love with a human man, just like the Disney version. Only, in the original, the mermaid never got to be with the human, and turned into seafoam (whether from the seawitch or her loneliness changes from story to story.) It's also a metaphor for her "drowning in her dispair". And finally, mermaids, or what some people know as sirens, are beautiful sea creatures with the body of a woman, known for drawing in sailors to their death with beautiful music. In this, Octavia would be leading victims to their death with her hypnotic orchestra. The creators of this show did a wonderful job with making every detail of the show fit with the characters.

    I'd add a sin for Homura telling Kyubey all about the original universe. Why would she trust him at all if she still remembers the old universe? Kyubey had theories about the original universe, but literally had no way of knowing until Homura confirmed it. Sure, if she'd kept her mouth shut we wouldn't have a 3rd movie, but - *Spoilers* We wouldn't have Homura becoming the devil to fix a problem that had already been solved.

    Lavender Admittedly it was a dumb move telling Kyubey about the original world's Witch system and the Law of Cycles. Especially since Madoka's wish didn't change Kyubey at all, and his species would return to that system in a heartbeat if it was more efficient for energy gathering which it is, and worse yet if they could harness a godlike entity for even more energy production. However, Homura's solution was necessary. When Madokami came for Homura she was in visible physical for as opposed to invisible like usual, everyone observed her including Kyubey. And now that he knows the Law of Cycles is an observable thing his species would've figured out how to capture or manipulate her eventually. Ore over the current system had still left Sayaka dead along with any other Magical Girl that would've become a Witch. The solution to both make things better and make sure Madoka is safe from Kyubey? Become Akuma Homura, even if she had to play the part of the villain to do so and make a better world as well as end the Incubator threat once and for all. But as for the world she created, or rather her barrier, Homura knows it may be temporary, and acknowledges that, accepts it. At least by the time Madoka regains her power, the Incubators will still be no threat. Homura knows what she did wasn't exactly right and views herself as the villain for it. You can see this from the fact that her Familiars are throwing tomatoes at her and carrying out the act of suicide at the end of the movie. The Familiars are a manifestation from her mind, showing that she believes she deserves scorn and death. But she did what was necessary for the overall good.

    Sin 39: While Kyubey should have done more explaining, the girls, as you pointed out, are guilty of not asking ANY questions, and that's what's coming back to bite them. Some, like Mami, can't ask based on the recruitment timing, but others like Madoka, Sayaka, the girls from Kazumi Magica (especially Saki) CAN and SHOULD have been asking questions BECAUSE Kyubey wasn't telling them anything, but didn't because then there wouldn't have been a plot. Also, legal autonomy? Sure, their not old enough to make a decision like this, but what can they realistically do? Aside from just saying no and ignoring Kyubey, they can't really go to anyone aside from other candidates or Magical Girls for advice on what to do without seeming crazy or on drugs, or both!

    One more argument, then I'm done. At the end, Madoka's wish can be interpretted as a happy ending, but the whole point of the ending was to show that happy endings can happen, and that they can change their own fate. Even then, Madoka sacrificed her existance to save these girls, making it a semi-sweet ending. Even then, you can only call a partially happy ending, the whole basis for Rebellion's ending is that Madoka's wish was something that she only did because she had to, and as a result, gave up her freedom to (At least for the Homura Supporters) save the girls, making it a sad ending.

    Fun fact: Kyubey is not an entity. It is a hivemind called *_The Incubator_* who is also an alien. Kyubey is the cute nickname the alien gave itself to keep young girls from getting put off. It can not teleport. It can, however, have two or more of its bodies in a single area at a time and, say, appear to teleport by hiding one and revealing another. That is why it walks.

    You know, Walpurgisnacht makes a lot more sense if she also becomes stronger with each time reset along with Madoka. The first time around, Madoka beats it alone in a suicidal attack. Second time, it's stronger but Madoka is also stronger, with Homura's help can kill it but griefs out. Third timeline, both Madoka and Walpurgisnacht are stronger, Homura is more actively involve and both of their soul gems are corrupted to the brink. Fourth, Walpurgisnacht is so powerful that Homura is being curbstomped. Same with the fifth, despite Homura using more firepower. She made it worse, by making the big threat even stronger each time, making it so that ONLY Madoka can stop it.

    The thing with magical girl telepathy is that Kyubey relays the girls' thoughts with his own abilities. Think of it like using a walkie-talkie to talk to someone too fast away to talk to normally, with Kyubey functioning as the walkie-talkie. Magical girls themselves don't have true telepathy. Kyubey likely refused to relay Homura's information to the other girls so he could better manipulate them into contracts. This would be perfectly in-character for him, especially considering the opposition between him and Homura.

  • @ZoeMalDoran

    And/or Homura trying to send her thoughts via Kyubey gives the demon space ferret info that she doesn't want him to have. The only time (that I know of) where we see Homura use telepathy is in the "Homura's Revenge" manga - the one that starts with her grabbing Madoka at the end of the previous timeline (implied to be almost exactly the same as the anime) and pulls her back in time with her before she can make the contract... and unfortunately Kyubey was also touching Madoka at the last moment, so all three of them retained their memories of their previous timeline, meaning Kyubey already knows a lot of what Homura is usually trying to hide from him. We see Homura and Madoka have a telepathic conversation about how to try to salvage the "first" meeting with Mami... and I think another brief one just before Mami fights Charlotte (when Mami's tied Homura up again and blown off her warning).

    I believe the reason why Madoka soul gem is that big is because of the fact that as a godess she has to carry a large amount of magic that she uses to take the burden and despair of every magical girl that existed in the past, present and future an she must destroy every witch that ever existed too. Mami also stated that her job meant endless and continuous battles, to which it requires an immense lot of magic, i think that's why her soul gem is that big.

    Minors can't sign legally binding contracts, they have no reason to suspect that the cute alien is manipulating them, and power outlets aren't alive ;) But for the sake of argument, let's assume that everything you said is right. Kyubey's been doing this for thousands upon thousands of years, and it's pretty clear he's had this argument with other magical girls in the past. The fact that he still claims that he isn't tricking them means one of two things: either he's lying (which he says he doesn't do), or he's so monumentally stupid that he doesn't understand basic pattern recognition after a hundred thousand years on the job - in which case, why should we believe anything he says? A creature unable to pick up on how children are individuals with their own thoughts and personalities, and how they are largely bad at asking complicated questions re: complex binding agreements with far-reaching consequences, is not cut out to reverse entropy.

    Everything Wrong with Everything Wrong with Video ;) You can't add 20 sins (+1 sin) Why'd the narrator swap 5 minutes in? (+1 sin) It's stated in episode 2 that Kyubey is the one facilitating the telepathy, not Mami or any of the other Magical Girls. It wouldn't be in Kyubey's best interest to allow Homura telepathy, thus she doesn't get any. (+1 sin) Magic residue was a thing Mami used to track Gertrude. (+1 sin) Homura's a time traveller, that's why she knows when the things happen. (+1 sin) Madoka finished off Walpurgisnacht after Mami weakened it in the original timeline. (+3 sins, one for each mention) Homura can just tell Madoka about the time travel. (+1 sin) You can't add 95 sins (+1 sin) When did the source material say that Madoka turned into a witch immediately after defeating Walpurgisnacht? (+1 sin) Some Magical Girls survive to adulthood. Not many, but some. (+1 sin) "One day, entropy is gonna kill the universe. Let's fix that by ripping holes in reality! Brilliant!" Lol (-1 sin) "Zug Zug make contract with ferret. Zug Zug have new clothes and magic powers. Hey, look, fire! Is that a meteor?" Lol (-1 sin) How would you even take "You're the only Magical Girl left" to mean "left in the world" when Madoka clearly means "left among the ones I know about" / "from Mitakihara who would fight Walpurgisnacht"? (+1 sin) "Yeah. Madoka is 14. She shouldn not be allowed to make this call." Lol (-1 sin) You say "pretty much a happy ending," but Kyubey is still systematically preying on, tricking, and killing pubescent girls. Even without turning into a witch, most of them suffer and die before reaching adulthood. The threat from the witches has been replaced with a different foe whom seems to be causing the same sort of effect. This is also not helped by her ending leaving Homura without the one person she wished to save, which would eventually lead to Homura tearing down Madoka's world. (+1 sin) Tally: 11 sins Sentence: Demon Ferrots

    To answer a question if the Runes are popping up in the real world. Yes they actually are lol. Also the names are from multiple folklore but most german. Also technically it's not really the real world either but a witch's domain where all concepts of reality are totally changed. =3 Not defending the series totally but there is some level of detail it means you to understand. Also Kyoko's sacrifice was because she used her soul gem as a weapon and was the reason they beat Sayaka's witch form to begin with. As no one does understands how strong homura is. Due to this level of unknown knowledge they assume the worst and take it upon themselves to do something about it. The other magical girls are busy. You can find out what they doing by reading the other 10+ manga to do with the series. Ya you can assume Homura just goes and kills all the witches we never see because she would know about all of them. She wanted to kill charlotte too but Mami got in the way of that one. Homura uses the grief seeds to kill other witches. So there is no telling if she can even save enough for the end. Also that griefseed in particular is one they don't want to have because it is most likely Sayaka's.

    In sin 289: Madoka's soul gem is big because of all the karmic power she has because of homura's time traveling, she has all the hope for the girls in her gem, as well of all the despair, so its that big because of 1. Homuras time travel and 2. All the hope she created and gathered, plus the soul gem is as big as the influence of the wish has in reality, since madoka rewrote the universe her soul gem is gigantic

  • @Tintenseher

    @Tintenseher

    All of that is stated within the show. The point is that every other Soul Gem is the same size. Homura's isn't any bigger than Kyoko's, Mami's, or Sayaka's, despite her clearly being the most powerful magical girl among them. The Soul Gems that Madoka cleanses throughout time (the viking girl, the teddy bear girl, etc.) are the same. Even Madoka's is the same in every single timeline until the final one, despite her potential growing with each loop. It doesn't make sense!

    5:30 Kuybey kinda half-lies a lot. It is possible to turn a witch back into a magical girl if you do it via a wish (if not literally then via rewriting time), but Magical girls who's wishes have already been granted would find it impossible. So depending on the context, it is possible, but only if you have a worthy girl around who's willing to wish it to be so

    Talking about Kyubey's plan: The most energy that gets released for collection triggers around the point when a Magical Girl becomes a Witch. That transformation is apparently the most energy-rich. So having the girls become Witches is VERY beneficial for them, not only as a thing for the girls to fight and waste their magic on, but as the point of MOST energy they can get. There's a reason the Incubators wanted to bring back the old system in Rebellion y'know. ;)

    There needs to be another sin for Greef seeds not being explained, at the end of episode 2 Mami uses a greef seed then tosses it to Homura saying "it should still be good for one more use" Why couldn't Madoka and Homura split that greef seed at the end?

  • @ZoeMalDoran

    @ZoeMalDoran

    Жыл бұрын

    Very late response, but in the series it is suggested, if not outright stated, that Grief Seeds can only absorb a certain amount of impurity before they "become dangerous" and "a Witch could hatch from it". Fully recharging Homura's magic/cleansing her Soul Gem from the brink of exploding into a Grief Seed after the Walpurgisnacht battle in timeline 3 sucked up way more 'impurity' than the little restoration Mami needed after destroying Gertrud. More to the point, Madoka probably thought she needed Homura to be at full power/zero grief for the "Go back and make sure I don't get tricked by Kyubey again" mission. Splitting Oktavia/Sayaka's Grief Seed might have saved them both or it might not have, and if Madoka had indeed figured it made more sense to save Homura than save herself, of course she'd save Homura first

  • @own492
    @own4925 жыл бұрын

    29:22 - She's rewriting the laws and as such Mami and Kyoko should be alive. The scene is them coming back to life since the reason they would die doesn't make sense anymore. The reason Sayaka is not there is that in every timeline she is either not a magical girl, dies in battle, or turns into Oktavia. Since Madoka's wish would make Oktavia impossible, she is instead taken by Madoka. 33:23 - Homura's wish was based on the fact that Madoka died. Since Madoka technically no longer exists, her wish no longer exists and, as such, needs to change. This is explained a bit more in Rebellion where the Incubators mention how she is an anomaly as her existence came out of nowhere and, as such, chose her to try and bait Godoka.

    i can explain the ending: so the law of the universe is that positive energy and negative energy must cancel out. (net of 0) this means that if magical girls can't turn into witches, the negative energy needs another way of existing. also, cut scene in the anime series: homura can fly! with wings made of negative energy (hint for rebellion)

    I have a theory as to why Tatsuya remembered but no one else besides Homura and it isnt perfect but it is something. Its that Tatsuya has some form magic inside of him from being around Madoka because her Karmic destiny or some shit was so high it rubbed off on him and he gained some minor powers from it

    You're counting Kyubey's sins as movie sins... That's like saying when the Joker kills someone in batman that means the film is worse than if the Joker didn't kill that guy. Yeah, Kyubey is evil, but it doesn't care what you think about it, you're just an insane alien monkey thing, full of cognitive biases. Kyubey is doing exactly the right thing to further his goals and doesn't care weather or not that's "evil".

    The sin on Walpurgis Nacht' name is undeserved. They don't know the names of individual witches. Walpurgis Nacht is also not the same if the witch, it's a moniker given by the magical girls for this particular witch. In Homura's literature you can see Walpurgis Nacht has been around since the 1640s, or something around that time. Another sin you name is Kyoko taking a 180' in personality. But this switch is explained better later on. Kyoko froze her heart because she believed her selflessness caused all the trouble. After reconciling with Sayaka she was reminded of why she became a magical girl in the first place, and she reminded her of the knightly characters in the stories she loved as a kid. At 12:10 Where is everyone else? In a timeline without interference, kyoko doesn't come to Matikahara, and Sayaka always becomes a witch, or doesn't become a magical girl at all. She has no surviving timelines.

    Madoka would know that Homura traveled back in time in the 3rd timeline because, in the 3rd timeline, Homura explained to everyone that Kyubey was tricking all of them and told them about what happened in the 2nd timeline, which is likely when Homura told everyone that she was a time traveler. I also thought that the timeline, in general, made a lot of sense: Homura travels back in time to the same date until the timeline when she learns that magical girls become witches. That's the timeline when Madoka asks Homura to go back in time to before Madoka makes a contract with Kyubey, so that would be at least a week earlier. Every other timeline after that she would have to travel back at least to the date before or when Madoka made a contract with Kyubey.

    if kyubey explained everything to potential magical girls before making the contract with them, no one in their right mind would become a magical girl. that's why he goes with the excuse of "you never asked." and homura knew to come at that exact moment during the oktavia battle because, you know, she's been through hundreds of timelines doing the exact same thing. homura can also only start a new timeline if she or madoka dies. just saying.

    Homura remembers Madoka because she already controls time. Because Madoka never existed, it only seems right that Homura should have a different design, since she couldn't have wished to save Madoka. She would also have to count for Madoka in Mikitakihara at the very least, which is probably why she has the bow and arrow. It makes sense that she doesn't control time anymore, but since she DID when Madoka rewrote the universe, she remembers her. Tatsuya doesn't remember Madoka completely.
