Everything Wrong With Lightyear In 23 Minutes Or Less
Фильм және анимация
Lightyear is the movie that Andy saw back before Toy Story that made him want to get a Buzz Lightyear toy. And it's exactly as convoluted a set-up as it sounds. Which might be why it came and went with a whimper. Anyway, it's got sins, of course, so we counted 'em.
Thursday: Space sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Indeed, they could have dogged on star wars and star trek a LOT. You know I would have if I was in charge.
If they revealed that Lightyear was actually a remake of the movie Andy watched as a kid the toy was based on I would’ve like it a lot more. They could’ve added a post credits scene of an older Andy watching it in the cinema with his own family or something and he could say “That was great, but it could never top the original” or something like that. It would’ve made much sense because I find it difficult to buy that a young Andy got a Buzz toy based on THIS movie
@Knightrogue24.

He didn't. He got a buzz lightyear inspired from a TV show. Buzz lightyear defender of the universe. This movie is not a movie He watched; it could've been but maybe it's a movie that's a reboot to buzz lightyear defender of the universe. Reboots suck ass so much, they never get anything right. TV shows an cartoons yeah that makes sense. Bullshit reboot movies no. This is a movie in our world, a movie about the real buzz lightyear in Pixars world outside of earth, not a movie within a movie that doesn't make sense. I have a great suggestion response to this, in pixars world with the humans this takes place sometime during the domination death of supers after BNL is just starting, they send star command to space to explore further extraterrestrial uncharted planets to look to inhabit them, when they get stuck on the planet for 62 yrs since buzz fails 14 times the test to get the stable crystallic fusion formula. Buy n large has been busy consuming the world, even going as far to create make believe shows n video games off false tellings of star commands mission to space, they create a buzz lightyear show and convince Andy to want a buzz for his birthday. The show Andy watches is not what happened to buzz. Buzz went fast into the future, he met an alternate reality dark it consumed himself in that version of his world, the zurg suit, ship, robots and the turnip inspired engine room that was Shelby c forthrights personal citadel ship straight the ceo president of buy n large. The Co axiom ships have the main population on earth aboard them. The zurg ship became a slaughter house ship because buy n large is not a good corporate business it's evil. The ceo is zurg. The real emperor zurg. But that doesn't explain why there's a zurg toy in 1997 with a cape, it's because there's different versions of zurg. The zurg from buzz lightyear defender of the universe show cartoon is not the same design as the zurg in toy story 2, that zurg is from the spinoff game attack on zurg. The one from the show is rarely ever seen after the alternate opening of toy story 1 ever again. He did have a toy then, why wasn't it in the movie? You're asking a question that's irrelevant. Zurg from that show sold out, buzz from that show sold out, because of consumer meets deadline demand in marketing. Ofcourse if a show does well and success it gets bigger n merchandise Gets made, but when spinoffs happen merchandise can get a little shaky at times. Why the stock is still full with all the same buzz lightyears with utility belts because 95 buzz is common to meet demand than later additional strategies to the market crisis when there's little less availability stock of buzz lightyear and zurg toys in the market. The company buy n large and waka waka toys made these for children's entertainment purposes and for devilish greed and consummation. They lied about the real happenings of buzz and his team, they stirred up lies to fool children into believing he's a super hero when the guy could've died at any point in the events of those tests. That's what they do. They lie n manipulate. And that's where it leads to wall e. Evil buzz isn't the enemy it's buy n large he was trying to stop buy n large because star command wouldn't lift a finger to leave, they were on the same side both star command and buy n large. That's why evil buzz fled and went insane becoming zurg because he wanted to travel back in time to stop buy n large from dominating the supers, the real supers. The ones syndrome, Evelyn deavor and Winsted deavor planned out to eliminate since incredibles 1 and 2. They don't care if people's perception or if politicians declare restoration to the nation supers agency is restored or not, all they cared about was control and manipulate. Syndrome was going to be a world dominator and emperor if the incredibles hadn't succeeded in foiling his plan. But if buzz did travel back in time and stopped the company from arising wall e and the buzz show would've never happened. Everything would have altered n reality in Pixar would be different. Than we see it.

I think it would've been cool if, at the start, they said something along the lines of: "In 1995, Andy got a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his 7th Birthday. A toy that was based off his favourite film. To show our love for the character, we have decided to reboot the franchise, restoring it to it's former glory. And for Andy...This goes out to you, space ranger." ...That said, this wouldn't BE restoring the franchise to it's "former glory"...

I agree with them lol. The one redeeming quality this movie had was that they didn't go for a cheezy "Buzz goes back in time and fixes everything" ending. I'm at least happy with what ending they chose for it, even if there were many problems throughout it.
@MrBattlecharge

Let's not forget that aside from Buzz and his friend, most of them weren't supposed to be Space Rangers, and they all weren't supposed to be citizens. They were still many light years away from home when Buzz detoured them and then marooned them, so they had to stay and make the best of it. Most of what the town was/is is set up around survival for getting back home, whereas home probably has more comforts and luxury qualities like entertainment, homes instead of apartments in the hab, etc. They likely weren't qualified or equipped for what was suddenly thrust upon them.

@@MegaZeta Lightyear has a PG rating, meaning kids aged 8 to 13 should watch with a parent. And it is never shown or mentioned that she dies, it is implied. If your kids saw that and knew she died, they probably learned about death and what was happening from elsewhere already. And similarly, if your 8 to 13 year old watched what happened on screen and was able to determine that Buzz was being stubborn instead of being focused on his mission (which is how it was being portrayed in the movie) then your children have some advanced thinking skills that somebody who is older with experience in reading between the lines might have. Also, they have recommended minimum ages for movies, doesn't mean that the youngest is the target audience. Most people who would be interested in this movie likely would need to have seen Toy Story first, and that movie is nearly 30 years old.

Super Carlin Brothers proposed that this is just the "origin story" movie, and that _Lightyear 2_ is the movie that _actually_ made Andy want a Buzz Lightyear toy, because literally none of the plot points Toy Buzz talks about are present in _this_ movie. Honestly, it's a far more plausible explanation. Personally though, the _true_ "movie that Andy saw" was the animated _Buzz Lightyear of Star Command._ This one is at best a "gritty live-action reboot" by in-universe Pixar.

Something that bothered me about the thing where we find out Buzz's old partner was actually happy so he can kinda let go of his guilt a little is that...she was only one person. And yeah, she had a decent life there and found love, but what about everyone else on that mission? People who probably already had loved ones and families back home? I get that it was meant to be a long trip, hence the hypersleep, but that that doesn't mean that people didn't leave a spouse or kids or anyone behind.

Yep. I just remember the commercial for Buzz Lightyear that we saw in the first Toy Story (the one with all the monster truck “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” energy) and there is no way this movie led to those toys. I buy it as a current-year remake of the better, more fun movie that got Andy excited for Buzz Lightyear in the first place, but not as the original.
The Whilelm scream is probably the only thing that makes sense in this movie, since it's actually supposed to be a movie made in 1993 or 1994. So the use of the Whilelm scream was probably very prominent in those years, since it's something that has been noticed and made fun of in the past 10-15 years (I guess).

I think the biggest problem with this movie was that Buzz the toy was already a twist on a trope. To have Buzz the human be _another_ twist on the _same_ trope doesn't quite fit right.
This bonus round and the outtakes getting so much mileage out of the Sox/white noise scene have been the highlights of my day so far. Brilliant
The series of gags with Sox making "white noise" killed me. You even used a Wilhelm Scream after saying "oh, that's so 40 years ago."
11:44 idk why but the tear launching got me 😂
EDITOR: How many audio outtakes do we have ideas for where Sox does some not-white noise? CINEMASINS: Yes.

So from what I heard of this movie's production, the movie's jarring faults is a result of Pixar somehow forgetting the buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon...and it shows!

13:30 Jeremy, I’m gonna answer for Th3Birdman here, Buzz needs the crystal to put in the main ship which he calls “the turnip” so he could finish his mission, something he has been so obsessed with the entire film. Pay attention.
As cute and as marketable as Sox is, not even he could save this movie.
Honestly what bugs me most about this movie is nothing happens, like there's stuff happening on screen but it feels like none of it matters to the overarching plot and I kind of feel like a part of the reason I felt like that during the movie is cuz I already knew time travel was involved before watching it

20:51 “what if I miss?” Did she forget she has a teleportation device stuck to her back that instantly brings her back to her own ship inside the larger ship? Also Sox has a fire extinguisher built in which we saw him use earlier, and I’m pretty sure everyone remembers that one scene from Wall-e
This is all why I choose to believe the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie was the movie Andy saw instead.

Besides being lightyears better then this one (he, he, he) it is also more believable that a very lighthearted cartoon with a space ranger fighting an evil robotlike emperor would have been a movie Andy could have watched and fell in love with Buzz Lightyear^^
You forgot the unforgivable sin of ret-conning that Zurg was Buzz's father in Toy Story by using a cheap joke about it when Zurg gets out of the suit -"Dad?"
Also forgetting to mention that Toy Story does a Star Wars bit in one of the movies where Zurg reveals he's Buzz's father. Guess Pixar forgot about that when making this movie
“F you Pixar and F you too Andy!!!!!” Lmfao😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
How did Andy watch this and not go to war over his Buzz Lightyear toy not having a Sox to go with it?

Who he defeats with a button press, a BUILT IN FEATURE OF THE SHIP!!! Ohh yeah then the film fucks the previous films for good measure. Typical Pixar, have exploded and imploded again a bit like Buzz Lightyears alternative Timeline. And like the alternative timeline, it was absolutely contrived and stupid. 😸 Personally I would have liked to see Buzz murder himself/his alternative future dad BY HAND. Yknow like he did with the bugs.

I know Disney would have never allowed it. But imagine this had been made with the creative mindset and restraints of the 80s. Afterall, to us this is computer graphics, to Andy, this would've been live action. I think using that mindset could've made this movie fantastic.

If it was the 80s, this would have been a rated R movie and afte rthe movie came out it spun of a kid TV show and toys for kids cause, that made sense for some reason in the 80s.

@@AlphasnowbordergirlI don’t care what this movie says at the beginning. This movie spawned the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon show, and THAT is where the toy line and Andy’s awareness came from. This film is supposed to be a hard hitting live action sci-fi thriller in Andy’s world, not something a parent would take their kid to see.
Perfect explanation for the movie. Thank you, Cinema Sins. You made my day.

Bro I would've been bummed out if she didn't give me the toy I liked.
Among a lot of other things, one of my issues with this movie was the moral. They do a big song and dance about how Buzz needs to learn to rely on others and trust in his team. Then they pair him up with what are literally the most inept group of people on the planet.
This is one of those times where the sins given nearly 100% align with how I felt about this movie. A lot of Toy Story nostalgia pandering, contrived coincidences, and a bunch of things that were meant to make you "feel" something, but weren't really given the setup to work. But at least Sox was great. He steals the show just fine. The only sin I could debate is the animation quality from Pixar being not up to speed for the supposed time it was 'released' in universe, as it could be said it was a live action movie in universe..... course you would have to then explain why Evan Buzz looks so realistic compared to the doll looking characters from Toy Story one..... huh, maybe this sin is more layered than I thought.

They shot themselves in the foot adding that scene back in man. That 2 second scene is why sadly it will never get a sequel 😔.

i always thought the buttons and the symplistic equations and stuff was a stylelized choice. like they Could make it realistic and have the formula for the hyperspeed crystal be extremely complex but they chose to represent it with 3 colors.
Buzz light year is canonically his own father now
The granddaughter should know the invisibility doesn't last as she states she used to play with it all the time with her Grandma.

17:33 Im sorry, but I didnt hear a word you said because I was too busy watching the robot counter
14:48 Wait until you read Army Regulations
3:18, I’ll defend this one because in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command’s Christmas special when Buzz doesn’t believe Santa Claus is actually Santa Claus and sarcastically calls him the “real Santa Claus” Santa says “you’re mocking me aren’t you”.
they had a lot of fun editing this one all over the place, had my attention through the whole thing and that barely happens.
