Despite this version of the movie sometimes being called a ripoff or a waste, Roald Dahl's wife has confirmed that this is closer to the book than the 1971 CATCF, and Roald himself didn't really like that one because it was too happy; his wife says that if he was alive today he would have loved it.

I think the kid traps are SUPPOSED to be really obvious. Like, the kids represent 5 of the 7 deadly sins (excluding wrath and sloth). Augustus is gluttony, Violet is pride, Veruca is greed, Mike is lust, and Charlie is envy. The traps very obviously poke at each child's most fundamental flaw. Augustus is a glutton who loves chocolate, so show him a river of chocolate. Violet is prideful and is especially proud of her gum-chewing, so a gum that transforms the chewer. Veruca is a greedy little cuss, so show her something unique that her daddy's money can't get for her. Mike lusts for recognition and fame (he doesn't even LIKE chocolate), so how about a TV broadcast and being the first human teleported. And Charlie, well, he's the easiest. He's poor as hell, his home is loving but his house is shit, he doesn't get to have experiences that even kids just above the poverty line get to have. So the entire factory tour is one big temptation, and also a fulfillment of that temptation, since it's an experience that nobody has had before, something personal he will always remember. Anyway, the traps are supposed to be obvious, because it's a test to see if the kids can avoid giving in to the temptations around them and prove they aren't as rotten as they seem. In fact, you could even argue that Charlie is the most tempted of all the children, because everything he sees is something special that he would never have otherwise experienced. For the other kids, some parts of the factory are interesting to them, but for the most part they aren't enthralled the way Charlie is.

'Chewing gum is really gross. Chewing gum I hate the most.' I love that line. I find myself repeating it at random times lol. I love Johnny Depp, he is so great at bringing quirky off beat characters to life! I have watched this a few times and while it can never beat the original version, it's still pretty good. I like the fact that it shows all the kids leaving the factory alive. I always wondered what happened to them!! Also the part when Willy is with his dad is heartwarming. We were shown why Willy was so cold and withdrawn. It had a great message about love and family! I disliked some of the special effects, but it's a visually stunning Tim Burton film!

  • @isabel6759

there's actually a very interesting theory that Wonka was spying on the kids the entire time. he wanted to give the factory to charlie but it would be strange to just hand it over to some random kid (because he was spying on him) so he created this charade. he created things specifically to tempt all of the kids and show how good of boy charlie was. the $10 was planted, the cashier was probably in on it. there's more to go along w it too. why would Wonka send out a ticket to his own hometown? why did he pat the last candy bar before sending it out? Roald dahl's wife was actually a producer and wanted to get it as close to the book as she could. not to mention, Tim burton is a great movie maker. they removed elements from the first movie that wasn't in the book. like charlie selfishly indulging in the fizzy room and they changed the golden egg room to the nut room. also, the oompa loompas literally had a pre-recorded thing for when the one kid died in the tv room. it's legit insane but so interesting.

@shrimp 4 life ツ actually its because he didn't like gene wilder as Wonka and the studio went behind his back with the script thus cutting him out of the production of the film and Dahl had a bit of a fine with people changing his story i mean look at the witches adaptation they only really changed the ending and he still wasn't satisfied its the reason his wife retained so much control on this sequel
