Everything we LOVE about our 4x4 EXPEDITION VEHICLE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We overland travel in a 4x4 expedition vehicle which is very similar to a traditional RV but with off road capabilities. When building or buying one of these truck campers there are a lot of details that need to be considered. In this video we are addressing everything we LOVE about this overlander. We start off with the lifestyle of traveling in one of these amazing machines, move to the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter FG140 4x4 chassis and wrap things up with the habitat where we live on the road.

    This is a pretty dope habitat. I feel like I'd have an easier time with this since it's just myself. I'm definitely not ready for this kind of life, but it's something I aspire to.

    I bought a 90 model and traded it 3 years later for a new one. No problems with the 90 at all. The 93 just had a little more muscle and instead of 6:13 or so gears that the 90 had, the 93 has 5:88 or so. So the 90 did 62mph and the 93 did 72mph until..... I added a Mitchell 2 speed overdrive. The overdrive split each gear in half and gives me a top speed of 82mph. 93 you say... Yep! It's been my daily driver being a general contractor sometimes pulling combined weight of 24,000 lbs. Ergo the gear splitter. If you turn the hubs to "free" and put it in 4 wheel low, then you have a top speed of about 35 mph in overdrive. Love it for pulling 24k up some steep mountain hillside. Besides when you are cruising down the highway, then you don't have to travel just below redline and only go 55-60. Lovely! Mileage: Best I got was 17.9mpg. On that test, empty with all tool boxes full and a 425 lbs of passengers (about 11,000lbs), going over 2 mountain passes with my foot to the floor as I had to get places in a hurry. Was driving the truck hard. So for the money, I'm glad that I installed it back in 96 when my warranty was over. Best possible addition to my truck and yes, it is still in use. Has 134 miles on it now. Bed is getting a little rusty. Oh... maintenance? No new clutch or anything like that. In 27 years, I had to replace 2 little back up lamps for about .70 cents each and the oil sending unit as the sending wire broke off at the unit and could not be spliced. This excludes fuel, oil, filters, batteries and tires. I also had for 16 years a Dodge Cummins. Cummins is a great motor, but if I ever had to have make a choice of trucks, I would take the Fuso 4x4 any day of the week. Still starts with the click of the key. In the next few years, I plan to replace or rebuild the flatbed as the calcium chloride from the roads has been hard on the bed. Happy Travels, Proud 93 Mitsubishi Fuso 4x4 owner!

Call me a wus if you want, but I've seen enough snow and ice I in my life. That said, it is entertaining to watch people who have never driven on snow do it for the first time. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

    Thanks for your video I'm building my own Expedition Vehicle from an old Mercedes Unimog you have shown me somethings that I'm going to change on my camper box design. I do have an advantage that I have a 6 metre/20 foot chassis behind my cab, but your layout is more efficient than my design. So far I've pulled my truck apart and fixed the motor and transmission, the transmission like yours is manual but I have 3 gear levers that give me 24 forward and 4 reverse gears. I'm very jealous of your fuel mileage with an empty box on the back I get 5-8 MPG, but the 12L V6 diesel mean I've got more power than I need and I can tow a extremely large trailer with my truck.

    Having to get underneath with a grease gun to do the chassis lube is not a bad thing, many would moan about it but then moan even more trying to find where the pipe has been squashed on a central lube system, they would then become apoplectic if it resulted in a bush or bearing failure. Also no little oil puddles when parked up, good for the environment in not contaminating the ground. Heat/cold transfer will always be a problem with an aluminium frame, even a timber frame has its own problems such as increased weight and rotting if allowed to be damp, some trees produce wood that has natural rot resistance but are hard to work as very resinous and hard when seasoned, Japanese Larch is one, very strong and light but takes the edge off tools in no time. If it is charred needs no further treatment as the resins form a waterproof barrier.

    Hey Rebecca & Ben! Thanks for the video. I happened on one of your videos and I've been catching up on old posts as I get time. I heard you mention the short wheelbase of the FG140, but which length is it? Did a little research and the 2007 FG140 came with either a 112.6" or 136.2" wheelbase. Which is Denny? Both are crazy short considering my 2018 F150 SuperCrew with a 5.5' bed has a 145" wheelbase. Thanks for the info!

    How does the truck cruise on the freeway? Is it able to maintain 80mph comfortably?

  • @outliersoverland

    @outliersoverland

    Considering what it is, it’s not bad. The parabolic leaf spring and shock upgrade with super singles made a big difference. Definitely not reaching 80 mph. The engine governor limits you to about 3100 rpm in 5th gear, about 70 mph.

    If someone was looking to buy an EV and offered to fly you both out & pay you to to tell them if it would be good purchase or not, would you do it? I know if I was ever looking to buy an EV I’d value your opinions. It also seems like a good investment given the fact that EVs can be the price of an actual house.
