    Ok. First off your videos are beautiful and I love them so much. Second, I’ve been very frustrated with my CO2 system, figuring my regulator is failing, but what I discovered is that my reactor is actually clogged and have been reading about different methods of cleaning them, which I was not aware was a thing, especially since I am adding calcium buffers. Maybe you could do another video detailing proper maintenance and optimization methods for our CO2 reactors and diffusers. Thank you again!

    Great video Balazs! I "accidentally" bought the Dupla S reactor and flooded the whole living room because the lid/cap popped off. It does not fasten with conventional threading but with a half bayonet-like closure which does not seal properly and, if tightened "too much" clockwise, the whole thing pops off. Very dangerous. Currently looking at the AquaCare reactor instead, hopefully it will work better.

    I don't think that there is a perfect reactor on the market. All are made of plastic, with these joints leaking quite often, there is a risk of flooding with all of them. But with that said, we only had like 5 leaks in 10 years with 15 big tanks. But special attention is needed indeed.

  • @dusk1947
    @dusk19472 жыл бұрын

    Having played with CO2 systems for nearly a decade, my favorite is still by far an in-line diffuser. The most challenging part is finding one which can be taken apart for maintenance. My favorite is one where the reactor can be disassembled, the o-rings can be replaced, and any ceramic discs cleaned. I did finally manage to find one after years of searching. But because how hard it is to locate one with that level of design, a simple reactor like the one you show here, would be far easier to install and maintain. And because it's external, hiding it inside the stand means function over esthetics. I also love that you included a pH controller. It's often overlooked but it really can save a tank, by removing any pH crashes. And it can save on CO2 costs. And yes, hose clamps are mandatory. This was a really good guide, you guys hit all the finer points.

    Have you looked at the inline diffuser from CO2 art? I think it hits all of the points you are asking for. Really enjoy the one I bought from them, and also bought an extra stone so that I can clean one and have one working without any down time.

    @@billcoleman782 That is the very one I am using, I just didn't want to name a brand name. It's very well made and the extra stone is a great purchase. It's the third in-line diffuser I've used, and it's the only one I've enjoyed using due to how well it can be serviced for maintenance.

  • @GreenAquaShop

    @GreenAquaShop

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, ease of maintenance is a big problem with in-line diffusers, glad you found one that addresses that issue. Another huge issue for me is that the outflow will blow all the bubbles everywhere in the tank, so it's worse than having a normal diffuser. At least for me.

  • @dusk1947

    @dusk1947

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@GreenAquaShop That is a fair point. micro-bubbles can get distracting, and I really adore the idea of a CO2 reactor. But I have not be able to find a retail version (in the US market) that looked even reasonably well-made. I did like the look of the one you showcased. It's just that every reactor I've seen which looked well made, has also been a custom build; and I haven't felt like taking the step of DIY building my own. All I really wanted was to see zero equipment in the tank. As I was able to find an in-line I liked, I stuck with it. But I do hope the CO2 reactor idea takes off, as I could really see using one in the future. A reactor is very likely the optimal way to introduce CO2. It's just that, the products selection isn't there to support it yet (at least not here in the US).

    @@GreenAquaShop I ran the CO2 art inline diffuser recently on a new tank. Initially, I didn't think it was working because I had no micro bubbles in my outflow. It wasn't until I lowered the flow of my Fluval 307 that I saw bubbles. I guess I was getting really good absorption with the high flow rates.

  • @Flyingdutchy33
    @Flyingdutchy332 жыл бұрын

    Nice! I've been using a reactor for a few years now in my hill stream tank. Because of the increased amount of flow (I have 2 filters on there + skimmer) it off-gasses fairly easy so this is absolutely a must for me, a regular setup would get my pH down by 0.4 at the most... However, the filter does indeed need to be strong. The Eheim Pro 4 600 didn't even have enough flow to fully dissolve the bubbles and that one already flows twice as fast as the Oasis 600. I ended up getting a Fluval FX4, which is just barely enough. So a word of caution here: Get something beefy, very, very beefy.

    Thanks! I don't really like to be a guru, I don't pretend I know enough for that. :) I'm just an average guy, but thanks so much for the support, it means a lot. You don't need a Nitrate reactor in freshwater tanks, the Nitrates are plant nutrients, and you can keep the levels at bay with the regular water changes. Cheers.

    So I used to have the diffuser in tank, the bubble mist etc. I then moved on to an inline diffuser on the outflow tube, and the mist reduced a lot. And then one day I had an epiphany and thought "why not put it on the inflow and use the canister filter as a reactor". And it works perfectly. No need for any additional technique, it works fabulous and there's 0 bubbles mist. I have two 60p running with that(one with an oase biomaster 350, one with an eheim pro 4 350) and it's just wonderful:) The only downside: it seems to require a little bit more co2 on the inflow than the outflow(not sure why): about 1bubble/s for a 60p, vs 2 bubble/3s before

  • @GreenAquaShop

    @GreenAquaShop

    There is another downside. The CO2 will decrease the pH in the external filter a lot and your filtration will stop. I would not use the reactor before the filter because of that. Also, the reactor will need more cleaning.

  • @craddocraddoc

    @craddocraddoc

    2 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't use an inline diffusor before the filter. The Co2 has nowhere to excape, will either get stuck in the filter materials and - as already mentionend - decrease the ph while dissolving there, which can damage the bacteria in the filter or - if it does not get trapped there - will get into the pumping chamber and make the filter rattle a lot and potential damage the pump on the long run. If you feed a lot of CO2 (f.e. in a tank with a lot of light) it can also make the filter "burp" CO2 occasionally, which can be quite annoying.

  • @maluskakrecik

    @maluskakrecik

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@craddocraddoc so from my experience so far on two tanks with this, yes there can be a rattle if there's way too much co2 being pumped(beyond the capacity of the water). Otherwise with any decent flow it gets disolved very fast and I don't get any rattle at all, a clogged skimmer/inlet that sucks air is much more likely the cause of gas stuck in the puming chamber in my experience:) Re the bacteria, that doesn't make sense, co2 does acidify the water, but unless you again are saturating the water capacity(very high co2), the co2 variation is negligible for the bacterial load in a filter. Last I checked I found huge loads of both microfauna in either filters. Again this is more of a matter of balance than it is of this being a problem in the absolute.

  • @williammcdowell6257
    @williammcdowell62572 жыл бұрын

    Sumps are a really great idea though not inexpensive, but if lit and full of hornwort they are really help water quality, but honestly I think reactors are the way to go regardless and bacteria in an external filter need the oxygen to do their work, CO2 on top of the CO2 they produce could very easily tilt the balance against them. Been to Sweden fantastic country, do continue to think and experiment.

  • @craddocraddoc
    @craddocraddoc2 жыл бұрын

    I've head an external reactor so I don't need to have that many things inside my tank. Still I never got it running well. It did slow down the water flow a lot and created pressure in the hoses and the filter. I ended up with compromise, an inline diffusor, which does work very well, does not put additional load on the filter and is a way to have less hoses and "additional technology" in the tank.

    Thank you for another timely video. I changed to the Sera Precision 500 reactor last week. I kept the bubble rate the same because I didn't know any better. The drop checker indicates that it should be fine. I suppose I will test turning on the solenoid a little later and dropping the pressure under 3. Also will remove the bubble counter which I had kept. There are however bubbles coming out of the lily pipe. They are much much smaller and a lot less than what you would see from a diffuser. I don't know if that needs to be remedied. What do you think? The move to a reactor was out of desperation to control algae by using a better method of CO2 introduction. Mostly I have what I think is green beard algae and green dust algae. I have a strong lighting Twinstar Ver. III SA Series for 120cm tank which only has the on setting. I run the light 7 hours a day. Should I get surface plants to block some of the lighting? When I first set up the hardscape and began to rearrange it some of the power sand came to the surface of the Amazonia ver 2 soil and was very difficult to remove without uncovering more of it. Can this cause problems with algae? I have 45fish(4 black mollies, 6 Celestial Pearl Danios, 9 Neon Tetras, 8 Bloodfin Tetras, 3 Albino Corys, 2 Green Corys, 3 Otocinclus, 9 Harlequin Rasbora) and a dozen Amano shrimp in a 272 liter 120cm X 50cm X 50cm tank. I run two Oase Biomaster external filters, an 850 and a 600. I have the Eheim 350 skimmer and of course the CO2 system. I also have the Twinstar Yotta+. I do regular water changes using RO water each week and sometimes twice a week. I believe with all the hardscape there is only 189 liters(45 to 50 gallons) of water. I use up about 130 liters(25-30 gallons) for each water change. I have large Seiryu stones and they raise the TDS considerably between water changes. After a water change should I raise TDS to 120 and then let it rise to where it may. Or should I add smaller amounts of Seachem Equilibrium and let it reach 120 after a few days? Daily I add 9 pumps each of ADA Green Brighty Mineral, Iron, Neutral K and Nitrogen. Recently I began to add Seachem phosporus and potassium twice a week the beginners dose for 189 liters of water. PH 6.4, temp between 70 and 72.9F, Nitrites, Nitrates, Ammonia, Free Ammonia levels all good. I completed a 5 day blackout 2 weeks or so ago and it worked excellently. Although the algae is slower to appear and grow it still mocks me.

    Well, never used Sera before, but usually when you see bubbles coming out of a reactor, that could be due to two problems: one, the reactor is not made in a good way, and the flow can push the bubbles through before they were dissolved fully (or you placed the reactor in a bad position, not vertically, and not with the outlet at the bottom), or your filter is too strong for the reactor. In that case, you can do a bypass with a tap, and regulate how much flow goes into the reactor. Yes, power sand on surface can cause algae. The light seems not to be the main source of the problem, you have to address the root cause, which is something else, so reducing the light intensity - while it might help by expanding your room for error - will not address the main issue. Your filtration seems to be fine (assuming you have bio media in the filters, not the pads). Don't worry about the TDS fluctuation, if you do regular water changes that - by itself - should not cause the algae. It seems to me you do everything by the book, I don't see any problems with what you described here. It should be another issue you did not think about (some wood leeching something into the water for example). pH is a bit low, did you measure that with full CO2 on? You could try to use a GH / KH buffer instead of just a GH buffer when remineralizing, maybe that can help. With that said, we do struggle with certain tanks from time to time - who knows why? But if you keep doing what you did, you should be able to address the issue. Good luck!

    @@GreenAquaShop Thank you for the thorough response and well wishes. PH with the CO2 and lighting on for a few hours is 6.8. Yes to having bio media in all my trays. I have GH/KH buffer but haven't used it. I'll try that first. Other things I'm thinking of are taking out a large seiryu stone (9 Kilo) and removing aqua soil from areas where only rocks are covering it and near the front of the glass where a layer of ADA Colorado sand covers a 2 inch layer of soil. It will let me remove/replace more water during my changes. I have "forest black wood" maybe will change that to something else too. Anyway, I get a lot of enjoyment working on the tank and trying to solve my algae puzzle. I have a very quick and efficient water changing system too so I'm not lifting heavy buckets of water all over the place. Have a great day guys and gals at GreenAqua!

    Hello! I have question regarding pH controller. My tank is setup with CO2 reactor and pH controller, but I’m not sure why CO2 is running 24 hours non stop! Shouldn’t it stop automatically at night? My water parameters are: pH 6.0 (6.6 degassed) KH 1 Tank size 180L CO2 4 bubbles per second From my understanding, pH should be lower at night due to plants releasing CO2 so pH controller should stop the CO2, however it just keeps running through out the night. I have strong filter and surface agitation is also kept at minimum. When CO2 is running pH is stable at around 6.0-6.1 but I don’t understand why it needs to run 24 hours for the pH to be stable. What is keeping the pH raising up at night? Is this normal at all? I have inert stone (black hill stone), and UNS Controsoil black which should keep the water at lower pH. Another question… it doesn’t make sense to have CO2 running all the time and it is ok to have a little bit of pH swing so should I set a timer to stop CO2 running at night? Or it’s better to let it run entire time? Thanks!

    Everything he said is true, I changed from conventional diffuser to external reactor then to inline diffuser and finally got back to external reactor again. Both inline and conventional got blocked in their ceramic ring/disc eventually, cleaning them can be quite difficult and sometimes you just need to get a new one. For external reactor I use insta max mix reactor which is cheap and simple, but as he said you need a strong filter pump to push the water. For my small aquarium (60 cm, 70 liter) , I use DIY canister filter and DC pump (12 volt). This DC pump has 800 liter / hour flow rate but has strong pressure (almost all dc pumps have strong pressure). And you can control the flow by controlling the voltage. As long as you control the leakage from the external reactor, this thing will serve you forever. It's also easy to clean (in my case the ista max mix reactor).

    I recently bought a COR 50 reactor including a fitting bypass that I have connected to my Oase Biomaster 600. No matter the bubble rate nor opening/closing the bypass valve it seems like 90-100% of the CO2 bubbles goes straight out into the aquarium and it's impossible to push the drop checker from blue to green. Made sure no air is trapped, it's mounted vertically to my cabinett wall. What could be the issue? I'm new to this so my only guess is that the biomaster 600 is way too powerfull even with a fully open bypass but the comments from GreenAqua on here seems to suggest that would be out of the question...? Everything is connected in accordance with the included instructions.

    Curious too. I ordered a C02 regulator with an inline diffuser to keep it out of the tank. An inline diffuser only benefits from the last point.

    What do you consider as a big tank? Is 250l big?

    I would go not with the tank size actually, but with the filter size. Anything below an Oase 850 or Eheim 2080 is too small (not strong enough) for me. Flow, flow, flow.

    @@GreenAquaShop ah okay, good to know flow is on this CO2 system so important 🙂

    I have an 65-70L tank running with a 1000Lph canister filter, can I use a CO2 reactor?

    It depends on the strength of the filter water pump. I would probably not use a reactor in that.

    Do you use Oxygen/ Air in night time in your aquarium? Please give reason for your answer.

    We don't, found out that the amount of the oxygen in the water that has accumulated during the day is enough to have a stabile ecosystem for the night. We have lots of plants in each tank though, and may are still raising the lily pipes or using oxygenation, fyi.
