Everything is Coming to Bitcoin with Zack Voell & Willem Schroe

SHOW NOTES:
www.whatbitcoindid.com/podcas...
“Bitcoin’s mandate to separate money and state, to disrupt an entire fiat financial system, and to act as the internet of money, that’s very broad and that encompasses a lot more than just what the Bitcoin base layer can do and what the Lightning Network can do.”
- Zack Voell
Zack Voell is the Director of Marketing and Communications at Botanix Labs and Willem Schroe is Co-Founder and CEO at Botanix Labs and the Inventor of the Spiderchain. In this interview, we discuss how and why Botanix are bringing an Ethereum Virtual Machine to Bitcoin, the culture clash and building on Bitcoin.

This is precisely what Saylor is in favor of: layer 2/3 solutions built on Bitcoin without changing the base layer protocol.

Spider chain sounds awesome. The reality is the world needs a way to use btc as the underlying collateral on side chains so it can scale, have more uses. Anything that strengthens the network without interfering with bitcoins design is ok with me

Just listened to the WBD's Saylor interview before this one - super interesting to hear the views and considerations. The more we discuss these topics and get a variety of stakeholders to chime in, the better off we will be. Remaining in silo's is the worst possible outcome. Great pod!

Enjoyed this episode. Don’t see any conflict with Bitcoin core values if building on a side chain. As Saylor says be extremely cautious with the protocol but build whatever you want on layer 2.

I'm fine with it. I think it's cool and hope that this achieves enough decentralization as is goal. It's not on base chain anyway. On base chain it's just settlement transactions in consensus which is always good for btc and what is created off chain will be done regardless. It's just more options for btc value accrual even if I never use it.

I like the idea of expanding the scope of what can be done with bitcoin directly. But what I want to know is how this will affect the operation of base chain, how much block space will it use up, if any. I'm sure Danny would've asked if he was there.

The guests seem well intentioned but misguided. What they are arguing is that everything in crypto/degen land should operate on a Bitcoin standard instead of a US dollar or some proof of stake alternative standard. Their premise is good, but they ignore the likelihood that this would occur organically by simply outcompeting other currencies. We do so by simply being the best money the world has ever created. Simply advancing the monetary function of BTC will - in the long run - achieve the very goals stated in this episode. And at the same time, that monetary use-case focus will help preserve BTC as the world's best money. We don't need to help the crypto crowd find Bitcoin. They will come when BTC is ready for them (i.e. when BTC becomes a widely adopted medium of exchange). And until then, I think maintaining a culture of conservatism is far more important.

Excellent show. I have no issues with it, from what I heard and understand. If people want it, they'll use it and it'll grow over time. If people don't want it, it'll fail. If no forks are needed, don't see an issue with it.

As I have already mentioned on many occasions, the proposal in terms of technological base surpasses the current ones. I have no doubts about that. The base layer is, undoubtedly, the safest. And multisignatures and the randomness algorithm promote two of the three characteristics of the famous trilemma. I hope (and I believe it will be the case) that the insertions in the blocks of the base layer of Bitcoin do not delay the transactional speed of the EVM layer too much. Without a doubt, a huge project...
