Thank you very much for your videos! I’ve watched literally ALL your NYC Marathon videos. I just ran the NYC Marathon this past Sunday, and it was the most fantastic experience of my life! Your videos and tips helped me immensely!! Thank you so much!! You’re amazing and deserve ALL the good things!! Also, the 59th Street bridge SUCKS!! Such an amazing experience and I can’t wait to run this next year again!! Also, I couldn’t wrap my head around the ridiculous journey to the starting village. The train to the ferry to the bus to just sit and wait for hours made no sense to me. I mean, I understand the logistics and the need for this process, but I couldn’t do it. I got a hotel room in Elizabeth, NJ, at a fraction of the cost of a Manhattan hotel. I slept in, had breakfast in bed, jumped in an Uber at 10 a.m, got to the start line by 10:25. Relaxed for a little bit, and then got to my corral when it opened at 11, and started my race at 11:30. So many runners I met at the start line were so exhausted from the train/ferry/bus/wait and they hadn’t even started the race yet! I felt so sorry for them!😢😢😢

This will be my first marathon 😬 I am so excited and nervous. Thanks for this great information.

Great video. It's the Army motto. Hurry up and wait. 2019 was my first marathon ever. It was the longest 8 hours of my life, but I finished. Hope to run it again in 2024 or 2025.

Great breakdown … I’ve worked it the last 10 years and haven’t been to any others…I agree when you come over 59th bridge it explodes and recharges the batteries historically people burn out at the end of 1st ave

Such a fun race. But not so fun when you’re not acclimated.

Great videos! This year November 6 2022 will be my first time running it. Im worried about it being abnormally warm and staying hydrated. Also worried about drinking too much water and needing to use the bathroom during the race.

Still enjoy your videos, Eric, even though I won't be out there again this year, not through my own choosing. Anyway... about the 59th Street Bridge. I always looked at it as a preserve of calm (albeit uphill and long), between the often extremely loud last stretch of Queens before the left turn, and the insanity of 1st Avenue. And let's just say it... it's a tough stretch. No question about that. But... I will remember the 59th Street Bridge as one of the last solitary spaces on the course, where it's just the runners, no one speaking anymore, and all you hear is the pounding of feet on the pavement. You'll hear the big crowds awaiting you in Manhattan before you will see them. And don't get carried away on that final part before the left turn off the bridge. Try to keep yourself as calm as possible because there's still 10 miles to go. If past years are any predictor, there's likely to be toilets under the Bridge on 1st Ave, followed by a massive water station and sponges somewhere nearby, if memory serves. No matter what, please remember what a privilege it is to be out there and involved in such an amazing event. Good luck Eric and good luck to all the runners. I hope I can be back out there with you all next year, or some time soon.

You're right - your memory serves you well. Toilets under the bridge, and a sponge station about three-quarters of a mile up the road from the bridge exit.

Great video! As someone who is coming from abroad to race new york marathon, would you recommend staying over in statin island to prevent travel disruption on race morning? How long does all the queuing last for would you say? Cheers for the content Eric!

I've ran NYC Marathon twice and only came across your video right now. I agree with what you said esp re crowds. NYC is amazing in terms of crowds. Boston and Chicago are amazing but the depth of the crowds does not compare to NYC. One race is similar to NYC though in terms of crowds - London.

Like the videos, thanks! It's always fun to relive the best day of the year. Done this 10x, this year will be 11. While I think the crowds are a sight to see on 1st ave, I don't agree that they roar. Clinton Hill and Williamsburg bring a lot more roar than anywhere else on the course.

That's a solid point. In 2019 it was louder in the BK than I've ever heard it before and I was bummed the camera I was using wasn't able to pick up the differences.

@@Dirtyoldsneakers everyone on 1st ave is generally "head on a swivel" looking for someone they know whereas those other spots are just rowdy town.

16 timer here... First Avenue may not seem as loud, I believe, because it is wider than many of the places in Brooklyn that attract large crowds. Right after the 8 mile "final merge" I have always found to be particularly intense soundwise. As you get to the top of the hill, the townhouses on both sides serve to keep the noise at very high levels. The school band that plays there always brings it "to 11", and there are plenty of people in that stretch that see their runner then get a subway to the UES. Further along in Brooklyn, probably at about 11.25 miles if I recall correctly, is another extraordinarily loud stretch. Lots of people on both sides of the street, which isn't particularly wide, creates a vortex of noise. "Joyful noise" as a lyric goes. Remember folks... One step at a time.

@@JackSheahan2012 Yes, yes, I agree with all that you said! The TV announcers make a big deal about the crowds on First Avenue, but you are completely correct about Brooklyn. I love the Brooklyn part of the course the best.

Just between us - I don't dare to tell my running buddies that I applied twice to the NYC lottery and won both times.. shhhhh

Try 9+1 if you live in nyc

I am running NY in 2023. I like Chicago there is decent fan support there. Very flat course. NY is very challenging. Getting to the race is not fun. That I know.

Never hear about that rumor before but I can tell you by experience (myself) Back in 1998 after the runners got their tags (timer devices) cut from their shoe laces, they have to keep walking to reach the UPS trucks and get their backs. If you're assigned as a volunteer in that area you'll see: runners (both sexes) taking their clothes off in front of everybody and guys (and some girls too) peeing on the side of the road (inside Central Park) with absolutely no worries in the world 😝

I assume you mean the one over my right shoulder? That was from the 2016 NYC Marathon. Not sure it’s signed but I’ll check on Monday when I go to my studio.
