TOAST performing "Everything I Own" at Bountiful City's Music in the Park, July 2018. We had such a fun time!
David Gates:
“That was written in memory of my father. I worked on the lyric so that it could be taken in a general sense and not be real obvious. Recording the song went really well, I was quite motivated to get that one done right. Larry [Knechtell] played a real interesting and complicated part on the harpsichord, and we doubled the kick drum to get that thick sound. I just tried to put as much emotion into it as I could.”
"This particular song stands out more than others, perhaps for the raw fragility in David’s tone during the opening bars. One can almost feel the emotion of his thoughts as he sings the first four lines, dedicating his pain on to vinyl, before the chiming unison of the acoustic guitars and the gentle bass riff introduce his colleagues’ accompaniment into the sound. Although the original inspiration behind the lyrics was not hidden away, many were to take the song at face value, with a number of successful cover versions appearing in subsequent years, leading much of the listening public to remain blissfully unaware of the song’s true sentiments." Excellent cover of one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
This song makes me think of my mom and dad who gave so much to me and my siblings and I were all adopted from four separate reasons and they gave us roots and wings and home and love.

White shoes... White belt... this guy was CRUSHING it even before the song started!
That was with no doubt the absolute best Bread cover I've ever heard. You guys were almost spot on with the exception of the drums being just a little on the loud side. The guy singing is almost a dead ringer for David Gates. Incredible!!

Delicate, powerful, just oozing "finesse". Very very nice, guys. I was a little disappointed at the crowd. Sure, they clapped... "lightly". But this really was an excellent performance - so much better than your average bar band. They deserved a lot more.

I am an amateur musician and I do play and sing this song at home, not an easy song vocally. This is a good Live version and it should have at least 500K likes.

Paying tribute to a Legendary band from the 70s 80s is touching but naming yourselves "Toast" is unwittingly discourteous and inappropriate!

Interesting story... Jimmy Griffin and others of Bread actually went by the name of "Toast" for a while after the breakup of Bread. Also the full name was "A Toast to Bread" but David Gates family actually contacted us and asked us for legal reasons to not use the "bread" name in our actualy band name. So we shortened it up and they have been very supportive of what we're doing.
