Your workspace is something personal. It can be the biggest eyesore that I dread looking at, or something I enjoy going to everyday to get shit done. A few months ago, I shared my vision of my ideal multi-purpose desk setup, and while it’s been good. It hasn’t been the best work from home setup, so I’ll be trying to make it even better and at the same time share some things I learned in the pursuit of the perfect desk setup so that you don’t make the same mistakes that I did.

I want to be able to use whatever computer I want with this setup, So I focused on the magical connector we all know as USB-C which can hold power, data and display from one cable. So I went with this Dell 4K monitor because it’s very minimal looking with barely any labels, and bezels, and is actually a really good color accurate display with built in usb-c for display, power and as a usb hub. And because it has built in usb ports, I can actually power my BenQ Lightbar, loupedeck and the Insta360 Link directly from the monitor.
Since this is supposed to be a laptop focused setup, I like to use the laptop’s display, speakers and keyboard to supplement the monitor, and minimize clutter. But sometimes it’s nice having good peripherals I can rely on when I don’t want to rely on just the laptop. I keep the Keychron Q1 Pro around the desk. For mice, I’m using the trusty Logitech MX Master 3S which, just like the keyboard, is wireless, and can connect to 3 different devices for flexibility. I’m still using the BenQ Screenbar Halo, it adds a nice moody aura around the desk, especially at night when all the other lights are off. Last time, I recommended this Belkin 3-in-1 charging station to de-clutter the mess of cables that sit on your desk when you’re charging your devices but I found it so useful, it ended up on my nightstand. But I found a cheaper alternative for you. It’s less than half the cost of the Belkin, feels and looks premium for a no-name brand off Amazon, and the magsafe puck can be stood up, so you can choose to lay your phone flat, or have it sitting up in standby while it charges. It’s much better than what I expected for the price.
Standing desks are great at enabling you to control the perfect desk height for sitting or standing. If you’re budget conscious you might like a Vivo or Flexispot standing desk. I’ve had better experience with those for budget standing desk legs. Most standing desks will let you install casters on the bottom, enabling you to move the desk around. But these casters have enabled me to move the desk between two different spots in my office space, depending on how I’m feeling.
I’m using a Herman Miller embody chair that I rotate around the desk I use. It’s an expensive chair, but I got it off facebook marketplace for like half of the retail price. And trust me when I say this. Even at this discounted price. You don’t need to fall for the hype. I see the Embody in a lot of desk tour videos and it's a great desk chair but the Herman Miller Aeron is good too and costs a lot less.
So, that’s been my journey with this desk. It’s clean, minimal, aesthetically pleasing, and functional for whoever just wants to sit down and start focusing on the task at hand. You just sit down, plug in the cable, and everything starts working together. There’s been some snags along the way, but it does accomplish the things I want to do.

One thing I learned is that you really have to consider the vibe you are going for because there are so many awesome setups. For example I’ve learned that while they look clean, minimal is actually not what I wanted. Took me a while to figure that out. My current set up has a lot of plants and lights. Books on a shelf that sits atop my setup. My vibe is magical and cozy. As corny as that sounds. I achieve this with a mix of wood and plants, earth tones like green beige and even pink, and warm lighting.

Grovemade is pumping money into youtuber's pockets to shill their products. It's wild. I wonder how many viewers fall for the hype. If you want a desk shelf of similar quality, a local woodworker can pump one out for 1/3 of the price. Or you can order one off etsy for half the price of a grovemade.

If you're looking for a thick and soft desk pad that is comfortable for elbows / wrists, you may wanna have a look at Fusionstrike Original Limestone Desk Mat. Me and my friends have been using it for 3 years, so far it's been great so we made a whole batch of them. Ship within UK but could sort out international shipment too. The rubber is made from sustainable limestone rock (instead of oil/petrol) which makes it more environmentally friendly than most desk mats out there. It's laminated with super stretch smooth nylon so it's mouse compatible and very gentle to skin.

Hey Jim, I'm "hot-desking" in the office a lot. Though it never came to me, that I could use the same method at home. Unfortunately I cannot make use of the one-usb-c-cable to rule them all kinda thing. My personal laptop is so old, it doesn't take USB-C to charge. :D But I'll make sure this will be the case for the next one I buy.

i LOVED your video!! i just have one concern, do you have any fix for using a UPS? Those are kinda big and heavy if one needs the extra time to work while during a shortage, specially for those that live in areas where blackouts are a common thing during storm season, so im wondering if theres a good way to still make a set up like this work, not sure if you'll read this but it would be awesome if a next video could have this as a possibility and ways to solve it! thank you!

Hello, thank you for the content. I wanted to know if you could explain two things: First, how would you use a teleprompter with this camera? And second, are there any difficulties in synchronizing the audio from your external microphone and the webcam when recording offline (some people say that if you are not on streaming mode you can have issues when sinking audio and video, which wastes a lot of editing time. Thank you in advance and regards.

Hey Jimmy, love the concept here. Definitely inspired to try out the hot-desking idea for my family. What do you think about using smart monitors instead? Like Samsung’s M8 or LG’s equivalent?

  • @JimmyTriesWorld

    @JimmyTriesWorld

    11 ай бұрын

I've played with this idea so many times, too! Smart monitors are great. Turns your monitor into basically a TV with minimal effort, but you limit yourself to the software support the manufacturer provides and all the potential ads, and bugs too. I usually just use my own streaming devices like a chrome cast with google TV, or Apple TV, because if it's no longer getting updates, I can just get a new box. But that could add clutter and take up an hdmi/usb port on your monitor. So there's some trade-offs to both approaches!

The best monitors to use with apple silicon Macs are sadly Apple's own displays (LG ultra fine 5K, Studio display, Display XDR etc. But sadly, most of those are so expensive. So I'd opt for a good 27in 4K monitor. Good 4K IPS monitors are getting cheaper than ever!

I'm using the ASUS 2K ProArt 27 with my Studio Max and haven't experienced blurry fonts at normal viewing distance. Naturally is isn't as sharp as 4K, but it has excellent color balance, the I/O that I need, a hell for stout stand, and was affordable.

Personally I use a 32" 4k 60hz IPS monitor. I actually have two, my main monitor is the Samsung M8 and my monitor for work from home is an LG 32UD89 that is a little older but is just as pleasing to work on. With the 32" size you do not need to worry about scaling. I prefer to use usb-c to display port solution as it also charges my laptop (1 cable solution). Remember that you do not need to spend more than 500 for a new monitor, just keep an eye on the deals (Amazon is coming up with their Prime days). MicroCenter has some deals too, or if you are in Canada keep an eye on Canada Computers - I got the M8 there for 500 CAD - I think it was a mistake.

The setup would be better without the laptop. That's how bad laptops are. You get a slab that takes up desk space with a keyboard you won't use, and a monitor that aligns with nothing and is likely of a different resolution. There is definitely a product gap here. Laptop screens need to be detachable or laptops shouldn't need to be open for cooling. Those with that work hybrid would benefit from something of the form factor of a mac mini, there'll be screens at the office and other peripherals are cheap.

I simply have to disagree with your take on Audio - saying that people don't care how good your voice is in meetings is not true. If so, what your saying or communicating has no value (no offense). I working in finance / tech, and the amount of comments and praise I get for rocking an XLR mic is crazy. It also means that people can always hear me clearly, and actually listen to what I say. There are way less misunderstandings or minor errors because my speech is clear, and people are way more on point. That being said, if you can afford to have people loose or misunderstand just 10/20% of what you communicate that's fine, but I preach that the $2-300 investment for a USB interface and a XLR mic, is such a minor thing to make sure that people understand you clearly. This is specially if you work in a international environment where you have different accents and levels of English proficiency.
