Hello Hello Fiber Folks!
Welcome to everything I knit in 2023.
While there were a lot of super successful projects in 2023, there were also plenty that were frogged and some finished objects that just didn't hit the mark for me. So let's take a look at all these projects together.
If you're interested in the specific details of any of these projects, the best place to look is the Ravelry project page which will help you access the pattern(s), see the yarn(s) I used, and get info. on any relevant modifications I have made. www.ravelry.com/projects/High...

Also something I recently learned from a friend, to dry your knits you can use a salad spinner to gently get out the water without damaging the garment! It’s a really useful trick for me

Having been at the same place as you, I would advise to buy some needles and start furiously swatching stuff NOW until you figure this out 😂. You can do it! Jokes aside, you may want to start and watch some videos with continental method for beginners. You hold your yarn left handed so it will feel much more familiar for a crocheter. I have been learning since November after multiple attempts and I made my very first sweater...in December. I'm starting my second with a thinner yarn and my tension and understanding of the stitching has already improved A LOT by now. It's so thrilling!

As someone that has now knit*5* Tolsta tees, I highly recommend giving it another go! I live in Charleston, SC where it's HOT so I made mine with Truboo (100% rayon from bamboo) and it's *lovely* and so cool and comfortable. I will say that because it's bamboo, I did discover the hard way that I have to make the neck much much smaller than the pattern calls for because it's such a slippery yarn but it's such a quick knit especially in Truboo which is DK weight

Might I suggest you could wear the long cardigan as a coat in spring/fall. It would look awesome belted, with jeans. A scarf at the neck if needed.. seems a shame to hide a lovely cardigan at home

I soak all my hand knits then put them in the spin cycle of my washer. It takes out most of the water and makes them dry faster.

Commenting because it's something you've mentioned before: the needle size you need to get gauge does NOT matter. At all. It is only provided as a reference so people know where to start swatching. If you have to go down 3 needle sizes to get gauge, that's fine! Because think about it, the designer may be a tight knitter. So if they need a size 7 needle for what a "normal" (not tight or loose) knitter might use a size 6 for, a loose knitter will need to use a size 5 needle or even a size 4 needle just to get gauge. But their garments will all turn out the same size. I'm a tight knitter, I can't use anything below a US size 2 unless I want to get 9+ stitches per inch. I'm working on it 😂

Your assumption about using your washing machines spin is a good one. I recently discovered that I can put my hand knit woolen garments, my thrifted cashmere and merino sweaters and even my triple tied yarn hanks through the Drain & Spin cycle of my front loader wm. Always manually adjust the spin speed to LOW. Because I frequently frog thrifted sweaters for yarn, I have to soak the swifted yarn to get the kinks out. Then I press out just enough water to get it in a zippered mesh bag and put it through the drain & spin on low. Dries so much faster using the machine this way.

I put just about everything in the washer to drain and spin after blocking in the sink. I feel it helps to make the stitches more even because I don’t have the extra water weight and am not stretching and pulling the stitches trying to squeeze water out. However I used a salad spinner for years. It gives you more control and a similar-ish result.

I loved hearing your honest reflections about the garments you knit this year, Emily! Thank you for the valuable information pertaining to each project. I am interested in knitting a summer sweater with silk (specifically thinking about using "Knitting for Olive's" pure silk yarn. I would love to hear your frank remaks about using this fibre. I like the idea of a summer garment being lighter/cooler to wear but am unsure of investing in silk fibre. (I am thinking that a silk/merino wool combination might be a good compromise but again, am unsure!)

Silk will likely keep you warm in the summer still! I would suggest going for a linen blend to have some drape and breathability! I love the pure silk, but I don’t think it’s the ideal summery Fiber!

I am new to your channel, and enjoyed this 2023 recap very much. LOVE your work, and your thoughtful analysis of FOs. Just a thought: have you considered putting labels on the screen to identify the pattern names and designers? And maybe the yarns too? My old ears couldnt quite catch them all. And have you got a link to your Ravelry profile anywhere? (If you do, then i can look up your projects.) I look forward to your posts in 2024.

Hearing you reflect upon your finished garments is so helpful to someone like me who‘s new to knitting clothes for myself! I really want to knit stuff that will really go with my personal style, will be comfortable and last well. I’m tempted to knit a mohair+fingering weight sweater, but now I‘m scared I‘m gonna hate it and never wear it and don‘t really want to invest time+money in that case. What would you recommend? Also, I‘d recommend the clover beanie by cosmaudi! It‘s crochet but looks like knit ribbing and fits so well at the crown and doesn‘t do the weird pointy thing 🥰

Yay! I’m glad you find the content valuable 😁 tbh on the note of mohair, I would only do it if you feel it fills a gap other than that it has mohair and your other sweaters don’t. For me, there are only a couple days a year where I might wear my Auer pullover, but those might not even be the days I feel like wearing it. However it’s important to pay attention to if the pattern has been designed with mohair or not. Typically you can get away with a looser gauge when you have a silk mohair strand because it fills in the space between stitches. If you swap that out for just wool, you’ll likely get a different drape and look overall.

I have been wanting to knit a sweater / cardigan with KFO merino for so long, I even have a specific color in mind, but i haven't find a pattern that I'm 100% into yet (specifically since I can't tolerate any mohair or else in my knits) ! Always loving your uploads, this round up is so beautiful !

You could maybe try Ito yarns‘ „Shio“ :) it is 100% wool and super soft. The cones each have 40g and are similar to mohair in yardage. I also struggle with mohair because everything itches but shio as a second strand works really well for me. :)

I had the exact same issue with the weekend hat! Thought it was just me so glad to know you ran into same problem with weird fold. It’s a warm hat but I prefer many other other patterns. For the Noro Madara, so you find it scratchy or did it soften up with washing? I almost bought it but then felt it at the shop and talked myself out of it.
