EVERYTHING Has Changed (Canon RF 28-70 f/2.0 6-Month Update)

A few months ago I made a review of the Canon RF 28-70 f/2.0 after using it for only one wedding day. Well 6 months later my opinion about this lens has changed... I LOVE IT more than I ever thought I would. It gives you all the advantages of shooting with prime lenses AND zoom lenses with almost zero compromise. I use it for 80%-90% of my images on the wedding day and want to share my experiences with this lens after using it non-stop for 6 months!

I"ve been a 35/50/85 guy for nearly 20 years. Finally managed to find the 28-70 in stock and I'm loving it. I've photographed maybe 8 weddings with it and managed to shoot entire weddings with nothing more then the 28-70 + 135. Dream combo.

Really need help with this My Ef 24-70 lens is broken. The repair is around 600€ I mostly use the canon R5 with the adapter and this lens and sometimes my RF 35mm I've been researching and I'd like to know what you think is the best option: Buy canon RF 85mm F2 and the new RF 16mm (since I already have the RF 35mm) or Just buy the RF 24-105 f4 lens (everybody seems to love this lens) The difference between the two options is just 100€ I can't decide between this 2 options. What would you do? Also which lenses do you think have the best quality and durability? Thank you ❤️

Seriously, this is the definitive review on the 28-70 F2. I 100% agree everything you mentioned! When you photograph events, travel and portraits: this lens makes your bag of primes obsolete. As opposed to the F2.8, this lens has the “look” that only primes have. I’m also around F2-F2.8 when I shot primes - because the narrow depth of field would throw couples or eyes out of focus. Have you considered the R5? Your R6 is already an amazing match but the resolution bump of the R5 is quite significant. Anyway, I’m in love with the F2 zoom as well. I think it will stay with me for many years to come, this baby is a keeper 🥰

Leica have these for their M mount cameras they have to click to each focal length since they work with and they need to be adjusted each time you change focal, which is done mechanically via the lens mount so the zoom lenses you find is like a 35-50-75 f4. I edited this post as the grammar just seemed terrible. I would also like to add you could use these lenses - to probably great affect on any modern day mirrorless system.

This lens still feels like it would be a compromise for me but know I could make it work. I also teach photography and often have students with slower zooms and will show them how to isolate subjects and find more bokeh (getting closer and/or finding backdrops with distance and pleasing shapes at any f-stop) but as a working pro, don’t want to limit myself too much. I’d have a really hard time not using the new 50 RF1.2 (incredibly sharp wide open). I’d love to see a comparison between it and the 28-70 f2 at 50mm, both wide open and stopped down a bit. I have the diminishing returns argument with myself all the time but by nature am always looking for a little bit better ..even if it means a lot more work.

I’d just like to say I think kit zooms are great for new photographers as well. I can also still work with full frame kit zoom. They’re just *too* slow for me at this point on APS-C when it comes to the subject isolation options on the wide end. I like to at least have… something to work with if I need it.

Have you ever thought of getting a battery grip for your R6 so your hand/wrist isn't sore at the end of the day? For me, the battery grip helped balance the heavy lens since it is front heavy.

I've been using a grip for years on all my cameras. I was going to ditch the grip on my new R6 because $349 for a grip is RIDICULOUS. The second I put my EF 70-200mm on my R6 yesterday I knew I was destined to put a grip on it. Yeah, it's extra weight but it's important for good balance with big lenses.

If you have a lot of soreness, try it with a grip. It sounds counter intuitive, but the extra weight shifts the balance hence putting less pressure on your hands. Ergonomics isn't necessarily about less weight.

I bought this lens for doing 4k video on my R5. Because it is an 8k sensor you can program C1 to shoot 4K in full frame with a 28-70 focal length and then program C2 to shoot in cropped sensor mode to basically double the focal length and still get 4K resolution. For run and gun situations this is great and a monopod solves the weight issue.

Thanks Katelyn. It's an insanely heavy but great lens. I use a peak design strap across the shoulder and body to distribute the weight while not actually shooting which really helps with potential fatigue rather than carrying in hand most of the day. For photographers that hate straps, I get it, but in this instance I think it's a really good idea. Loved your comment about zoom lenses and what focal length to use having had your experience with primes. The way I do it is to say, okay let's do some wide angel shots and I try keep the discipline of not zooming during this phase and vice versa for tele or mid tele end of the zoom, otherwise you can lose your way a little. Treating this lens like having 4 primes is the way to go imho. Cheers

Amazing lens. As for weight, I have found that instead of using a battery grip to improve ergonomics with a heavy lens, it is better to get a Promedia Gear L-bracket, which has an offset "L" vertical piece that sits forward of the ports on the left side, and can be extended out a few inches so that you can completely wrap your left hand around it as a handle. The advertised purpose of this vertical piece is for portrait oriented tripod work, but I found it super ergonomic to use during a long wedding as a grip. Not only can you grip the "handle" while shooting, but you can also use it to dangle the camera at your side between shots. Rather than using your finger strength on the camera grip combined with some bicep curls as you carry it around, you can instead just wrap your fingers fully around the L plate and let your arm hang limp at your side, and let your arm bones take the weight. This makes an incredible difference in fatigue for fingers, hands, wrist etc. As a bonus it takes a Spider Pro pin on the bottom edge of that L, and the plate itself has a QD port so that you can hook it up to a Black Rapid or Holdfast.

I had this lens for a few months and ended up selling it. Yes, I think it's unique and very well made. However, the bokeh/out of focus area looked messy and distracting to me (not as "creamy"). Like if the lens didn't know what it wanted to be. I'd highly suggest just going for the 24-70 instead.. and if you really want wider aperture get a prime. But obviously, if you like it you like it.

I have owned this now for 18 months and it rarely leaves my R5 for the vast majority of the wedding also. Shoot, RF15-35 on my second body and occasionally swap this out for RF70-200 f2.8. I think you need a cross body strap at least to take some of the weight while not shooting. I use a Holdfast money maker as I shoot two bodies and would thoroughly recommend this or the solo strap if you only shoot a single camera.

It's not ...not whole fstop like switch f4 to f1.2 . You get more problems like vnet distort aberration maybe focus problems wider focal length wider aperture along very high prices just as focus breathing at telephoto problems. You losing at least 24 focal length unless you also have 16-35 no is f2.8 rf 15-35 or 35/24 primes.

The "using it for 80-90% of the shots" when being a prime photographer normally, was totally the reason for me buying this lens recently. So happy with the quality of this lens. It really is a game changer. The weight doesn't bother me on a gripped body personally. I was mostly a 35, 85, 135 prime shooter before (and 100 macro of course). I can definitely see how this replaces most of the needs for the 35/85 range. Super happy with my purchase and agree with what you've said :)

I am a complete amateur and mostly a travel/tourism photographer and often get left behind fiddling with 2/3 lenses while whoever I'm travelling with gets frustrated so I either have to move on or compromise with a badly framed/low res shot. I first took this lens to a late night illuminated woodland and got shots just on full auto settings out of the box that would have been impossible on any of my many other lenses. Plus I could reframe take short video clips and move on carrying one camera and one lens. Cant wait to take this to my favourite landscape locations

No doubt that the 28-70 F2 is amazing, but I think the question I have looking to get a mid tele zoom is just how much is lost or gained compared to the 24-70 2.8, Gain IS, Gain wider focal length, save money, and lose 1 stop of light? With an R5 the ISO is so good that I do not think I need it for speed, so it comes down to background separation, and in that regard a 1.2 prime still goes circles around F2.0. So I really hope to find some other comparisons where someone used both for a while to give a full neutral view of both. I think I'll ultimately end up with all 3 2.8 zooms, 100mm macro, 85mm prime, and a 100-400 for long range stuff.

This sounds like a silly question. But how do you rest your camera (with 28-70mm attached) on a table (or flat surface) when not in use? Because of the heavy weight of the lens it always tilts forward (and rests on the tip of the lens). Does this cause a strain to the Camera-to-Lens connection point?

Most people know the difference but usually only shoot wide for a group shot and zoomed for a far away compression shoot. Would be good to know your take. I mean I see some amazing photos that draw you in from the veil leading to the face etc. I saw a half face portrait where the eyes was enhanced soo much - I know that image was probably done with a wide lens but I can’t repeat it. I just got rid of the lens altogether and find that I love shooting without any optical elements obtruding my sensor. The raw, pure image straight from the sensor is where it’s at. In total 3200 out of 3700 photos were made with 28-70L. For sure it is a great lens, however it doesnt like shadow situation, where light is very limited. I often find photos made In such hard conditions to be soft. I tend to use flash and have less ambient light than having softy photos.
