Everything Goes Wrong with Your First Betta Fish

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Here’s the story of what happened when I tried to troubleshoot what was wrong with my friend Wendy’s betta fish tank. It’s sooo hard to help someone with their aquarium over email or text, and I definitely missed several key details that probably would’ve been more obvious if I could actually visit her home. 😅

    I completely sympathize with Wendy because when I was a beginner fishkeeper, I also did a ton of research but still ran into many problems. Wendy was gracious enough to let me share her story and will most likely see this video, so please - no mean comments down below.

    Wendy sounds like most beginner fish keepers. I encourage Wendy's MTS. It's a beautiful disorder, and one that can really educate you on the ingredients of life. Including the cost of your own food vs the live food for that fish you had to have. Here's the thing: Wendy is suffering from being new to a hobby that is supposed to be hands off most of the week. At least the betta girls are the same species she's dealing with. She's not like.. trying to put 6 rams with a school of neons in a 15.The fact it's not a community 5 gallon deserves applause. She's new. She wants to do, not just learn. And that's great for her and her local shop unless things start to die because she gets overwhelmed and then walks away. One of the things I do when I get antsy is cultures. Set up some brine shrimp, harvest some green water... depends on the species of fish. Maybe she's already got a green thumb and could handle a tank of anubias and java fern and rabbit snails so she can move stuff around all the time. Turn her on to Racheal and Secret History... I'm sure you have, and have your favorites. Maybe some of the nano tank people from Europe. She's being proactive by binging you. But you are not enough. Your videos are great, you do good work. but we learn best from consensus. And you would probably have more screen time if she had more sources. The life lesson that comes from fish keeping is how to troubleshoot. Every lesson has a cost. Unfortunately it costs most of us lives, on more than one occasion. Good luck Wendy! It's a curving road, but you want to know things. That can't be taught! Plan well!!

    One thing I’ve learned in the hobby and having a dozen tanks with a variety of fish is the importance of doing your own research well in advance of adding fish to tanks. Your video did a good job of showing just how bad things can get if you don’t plan ahead. Things can go horribly wrong even if you do plan but the poor fish have little chance if you don’t educate yourself on their specific needs. Thanks for your videos and I’m happy to see you’ve recovered from being I’ll last month.

    I feel sorry for newbies, which I technically still am. I went into Petco wanting one betta fish for relaxation. I was handed all the small tank, plastic sharp plants, etc. and told that is what I needed to get and that I could get the fish the same day. I listened to the pet experts. It never dawned on me that a lot of PETco employees don’t actually know about PETS. Luckily, they didn’t have a fish I liked that day. Getting and keeping a “regular” fish is almost always advertised as an easy and quick thing, especially when you look at the pictures on the boxes. Given the pictures, you really do think goldfish belong in small bowls. Anyway, I came home that day and went online to look for a colorful fish tank and that is when I went down the rabbit hole of information and Facebook groups and KZread videos, which can be dizzying at first because of so much conflicting info. After sifting through it all and learning some things, I now have MTS and balanced tanks that usually only need to be topped off. I had good intentions that first day. I wasn’t cavalier about the fish’s life. I just was ignorant and didn’t even know it and felt secure in trusting chain store “experts.”

    At the Petco I used to work at we were taught a lot about betta fish and when we would give customers advice on tank size and not to use plastic plants they would get mad at us for giving them the info many of them just wanted us to sell the fish and give them a small tank. Because whenever I would tell them 5 gallons would be the bare minimum they go over to a 1 gallon tank we were selling and say "well can't I just do this." We would also refuse a sale if you refuse to buy the proper stuff for the fish. I guess not all Petcos follow that motto and just want to make a quick buck.

    It is SO hard to give advice when you can't see the tank for yourself, observe the fish, and do a couple of water tests. Plus I hate giving anybody advice when they aren't going to listen anyway, lol. Example: friend with 1st ever tank, she wants pretty little fish, guppies, platys, etc, he wants an Oscar. After I get done explaining that no, NO, you can't keep an Oscar in a twenty g small fish community tank and why. She's like...oh OK, I understood. 2 days later she calls...so we took the 20 g back and got a 50 L and reset everything up and we got TWO Oscar's in there with the fish I already had. And I put pics of our tank on FB and everybody is yelling at me that my little fish are just swimming treats and food for the Oscar's and that the tank still isn't big enough for just 2 Oscars. So hubby said, bump 'em, we're just gonna enjoy our fish and tank and not even worry or care what "they" think. See...I can't give advice on situations like that. Bad things will come out of my mouth, 😂 You're very good at what you do, Irene, and very patient too. 👍❤👍

    I’ve learned to ask first and foremost: Did you cycle your tank? More than half of the time the people asking for help either did something like “deep cleaning” or switching out a filter cartridge to crash the cycle, or they straight up never cycled the aquarium in the first place. Experienced fish keepers take it for granted and beginners are often never told about it. It hurts my soul to hear “what’s a cycle?” AFTER the fish is already in the tank, but hey, anything to give a fish a better life, right?

I had a rule that I never put prized, rare or expensive fish in a new tank or with any new major equipment or systems. Throw in something cheap and hardy and let them take the risks. After things cycle and season then make slow changes. It's a very hard hobby for the impatient but it will save them so much grief. . .

    Living in Taiwan what I found was the water's volcanic so it pretty much kills off all tropical fish. For those of you who have water that's basically like acid the best way to fix it is let the water sit for 3 days and add in a piece small piece of dried cassava leaf or almond leaf. I don't even need to use chlorine and my fish are thriving my plants are thriving in fact when you put in your driftwood and if you don't boil it the tannins will release into the water so actually it creates a pretty good environment. Last year I haven't had any fish death. 3 years to figure out what was going on

    So, for future reference, what is the cause of the foaming after adding the wood? Is it because of the organic waste produced by adding the wood direct to the tank without boiling it or letting it soak for a couple of days and then dirtying the water column?

  • @GirlTalksFish

    @GirlTalksFish

    Yeah, I think it was the excessive tannins from the mopani wood, concentrated in a nano tank. People recommend boiling the driftwood in an old pot that you don't mind getting stained, but with mopani, apparently the boiling can take forever to leach out all the tannins. 🤷‍♀️

Can you put two female betas in a 6 gallon tank and again it’s a corner tank so there’s lots of room to swim tiger. Lily hates his reflection so I think that’s why he’s happy or in the rectangle or one but cerulean was more chill, and it didn’t bother him:( also, is there a corner tank filter that you can recommend? How do you clean those corner filters because there’s an insert that goes inside that is small and I just don’t know how to clean it without taking the filter out. Is a half inch the correct amount to leave without water so they can breathe? What are the best toys and chill stuff to relax on and is a must for a good thing to put in a tank and what kind of snail is the best? Also, what are the best tank mates if I just get one beta for the 6 gallon and do you put them all in at once? So many questions please help.

    Question: My water is really hard (19dGH to be exact) so I thought I was going to need an RO unit. However after visiting a local fish shop and asking them what they do they said they use tap water, so since the fish and plants (I’ll use fancy soil and supplements for the plants) are already used to the hard water should I bother with RO? P.s If you think I should don’t hold back.

  • @lenaneubert777

    @lenaneubert777

    2 жыл бұрын

    When I tested my tap water, it said 22 dGh. Because a RO unit seemed like too much effort to me, I tried several other stuff. And a "BRITA water filter" reduced my tap water to 14 dGh in one go, even slightly more, when I filtered the same water again. As the filter only fits a volume of 2.4 Liter at once, it's only suitable for smaller-sized aquariums. Most fish that don't necessarily require non existent dGh are fine with parameters up to 12 dGh. Especially when they are not wild caught but bred in water parameters similar to 10-15 dGh.
