Looks like a fun project. The good news is that you can buy any part that you will need easily and relatively cheaply new or used. Prices did blip a bit when Land Rover stopped production of the Defender and unscrupulous dealers tried to exploit that. One point to bear in mind is that the body panels are not aluminium but an aluminium alloy called "Birmabright". I've seen restorers on T.V scratching their heads wondering why they couldn't make a simple aluminium weld. While the aluminium alloy panels are resistant to corrosion they can suffer from electrolytic corrosion at the bolt holes joining alloy to steel. Basically the alloy turns to a powdery white dust and the hole gets bigger. If you catch it early a clean up, a larger washer to cover the hole and a thick coat of paint is usually sufficient to interrupt the electrolytic process. I used a small sand blaster, the sand /pressure tank about the size of a camping gas cylinder connected to an air compressor it saved me hours of cleaning and the cost of some parts. I tried one of those spot / sand blasters that look like a spray gun but it was useless. I can highly recommend joining a Land Rover club as the forums are full of knowledge (real knowledge no guessing) and are super helpful. Looking forward to watching your progress

What You got there is called "potential". Do not ruin it. Keep it original wherever it is in any way possible. No engine swaps, no upgrading, no changes whenever there's the original LandRover crap still available. They built all of it like they did back in the days for a reason. Keep it that way and learn what the reasons were. Thanks for sharing! And cheers, mate!

I think the way forward Dom is to get a good chassis and transfer the bits over as you clean them up or replace them. So glad I found your channel, you’re a natural, keep up the good work because this is the future of entertainment.

Got a Richards galvanised chassis for my 2a restoration, really happy with it so far. Went with a galvanised shielder bulkhead which seems to do the job. Get the land rover workshop manual or green Bible as it's known along with the parts manual will make the job a lot easier!

Awesome! The Series Land Rovers are one of the nicest things ever to work on, I've had them for years and repaired/rebuilt them a few times! They are so easy to work on being basically a big Mecchano kit! Best bet is just to strip off all the parts, see if the chassis is repairable, alternatively just get a new galvanized one and get that rolling first then rebuild back on it. Since you're doing a full restoration, I'd personally fit the aftermarket disc brake conversion. All the best with this, I'll be glued to your progress! Regards. Derek

If you don't go for the disc conversion which is horribly expensive, try to find a front axle from a 6 cylinder or a stage 1 V8 as they have drums with twice double width brake shoes and two wheel cylinders and set up properly, they stop the car very well. I'd opt to put in a 3.5 V8 on carburettors, and put 3.54 diffs from a RangeRover in place of the original 4.7 ones. Parts, best in my opinion is AEW Paddock, also John Craddock. Rimmer bros. As for a new chassis I think the best is Richards and go for a galvanised one . If you are putting a brand new chassis under the series 2A , you have no problems keeping the registration as far as the DVLA are concerned. There's plenty of info in the various Land Rover mags (if they have survived Covid of course) looking forward to this one Dom!

I'm jealous! my first Land Rover was a Series IIA short wheelbase station wagon which did need a fair bit of welding over the time I had it. Reading through the other comments there is a lot of good advice there. I would also add Rimmers as another source of parts, and Exmoor trim if you want to repair/replace the trim. Its also worth while buying one of the monthly magazines and browsing the classifieds. If you do go for an engine swap go with the 300Tdi, powerful enough, quick enough and reasonably economical. And its not true to say youve got no brakes, the handbrake is a transmission brake so works on all 4 wheels

GREAT choice of vehicle to restore Dom,no shortage of parts available and mostly cheap too . If you replace the engine, don't go for one that develops a lot of torque or you'll go through a lot of halfshafts and or gearbox layshafts,or fit the later Salisbury axle which has thicker half shafts. Love all the project's you tackle, you're a talented chap

Good luck with that one Dom, spent a fair while in, and under, Landys as a kid. Loved them. Only trouble is the straight 6 LWB we had used to do about 15mpg and the diesel Perkins not much more. We thought the fuel tank had a hole in, the gauge went down so quick.

You're way ahead of the game with an aluminum body. Very cool project.

Not directly connected with the restoration, but a little interesting fact about LR workshop manuals. In my working life, I spent some years as a freelance IT consultant, part of that time being at Land Rover. The project I was working on was to develop improved processes to produce, among other things, Workshop Manuals. This brought me into contact with the Technical Authors, two of whom were named Shakespeare and Bowdler - yes really.

Friend of mine did a similar re-build with his Land-Rover 20 years back. Had a new chassis fabricated and took cardboard cut-outs of all the non-standard brackets with measurements to get the same fitting locations for his particular vehicle. The story was that Land-Rovers have a "Standard" chassis per series and then variants that evolved over the time they were in production. I'm sure you you know of spares outlets where you are, but I have lost track of the number of times we "just popped in" to our local one when we car shared. Best of luck with the project.

In the past i had an identical landrover to yours. Back then they were ten a penny i paid £150 for mine. If you are looking for a fairey capstan winch for yours there is one lying about here somewhere and an overdrive, a must have on a series Landrover in my opinion. Hi Dom, just recently found your channel. Doing a Series 3 up, it has had a 200 TDI engine from a Discovery 1 fitted. A very common engine upgrade, plenty of info on it online on forums and if your on Facebook on all the Series Land Rover groups. Also look up Britannica Restorations on KZread a Bloke called Mike in Canada but from Yorkshire originally, mainly does old Defenders but very knowledgeable. He has worked on Land Rovers for years and some Defender/Series stuff cross over, so will still probably be able to help you. Jealous you have a 109 LWB as mine is just the 88 SWB, be more room in a 109 for all my model boats (although not in yours as it has the second row of seats lol). When I found your channel I thought "He looks like that guy Dom from The Repair Shop", then was like "Ahhh it is that guy Dom from The Repair Shop this will be a good channel". So subscribed straight away.

When it comes to the harnesses, go to Autosparks in Nottingham. They make excellent, OEM spec harnesses for classic cars. Affordable, for what they are (electrical fires are a top killer of classic cars) however there's typically a 12 week lead time so work out what you need and get it ordered. As others have said, join the Series 2 club and any local land rover clubs too, they're full of knowledgeable people. The classic land rover Facebook groups are very good too, however the more generic defender and land rover groups are bigger and full of some wallys so are less good. That looks like an original diesel engine from afar but hard to say for sure. And please leave it on drums. They're perfectly adequate for an old vehicle like that once restored/replace, unless you plan on driving it like a goon. You've got a lovely unmolested example of a LWB station wagon, please try and keep it that way. It will look mint once you've done the work. And good luck!

A friend of mine is doing a 300TDI 5 speed conversion on one at the moment it all fits pretty easy if you use the defender gearbox with the skinny bell housing.

Dom, I've come late to this having seen your Ranalah videos. Get it secured or it will be nicked. Probably needs a new chassis, go for galvanised, go for a LR diesel (200tdi / 300tdi). I am so looking forward to seeing you progress as I've had ... a few Landies myself. Well done, Simon T

If you're not worried about originality I would thoroughly recommend a 200 Tdi engine out of a Series 1 Discovery. IMHO the best engine Land rover ever made and an easy drop into your 2a.

I fitted a discovery 200 tdi into my series 2, a very easy job to do.

Hey Dom, Go for a Galvanised chassis for longevity and try and pick up a 300 TDi engine for it, they’re bomb proof and can still be improved from standard, but are still completely mechanical, ( no ECU’s to worry about), and can be fixed anywhere in the World at the side of the road - believe me I know !

Richards galvanised chassis. Plenty of LR suppliers around. New bulkhead. 200 or 300 tdi.

Richard chassis is a good place to start for a new chassis and bulkhead. You can paint the galvanising after chemical treatment if you don’t want a shiny finish. This gives double protection. Places like Paddock Spares and Britpart will help, do a bit of research of what you are buying. Somethings it’s worth paying the extra for OEM, but other times when you buy the cheap part you are buying old OEM stock. Anything up to a 200tdi will drop in, but 300tdi requires more work, new gearbox and chassis mods. Personally I think if you are going to all the effort on an old Landy you should put the original motor back in. I’m not sure what it is off the top of my head but maybe 2 1/4 petrol or something? It’ll be slow and underpowered but that’s how the series were designed :)

Hi Dom, we’re so similar. I have a workshop near Tenterden. I’ve just started a company doing electric classic cars. Learning as I go. Currently have a classic fiat 500 and a Splitscreen. But your Land Rover would be great for a conversion.

That's a rather nice and seemingly unmolested machine. Be aware if you convert to disk brakes you can't use the standard wheels IIRC. I seem to recall they are too big or something. A station wagon should have a servo, and you could upgrade to six cylinder brakes if you wanted. Landrover brakes are perfectly good if set up properly with good quality parts. Keep up the good work 👍

@@DominicChineas You could do a "period" upgrade like a 3 litre six which the factory did experiment with. I personally prefer petrol to diesel in a series Land-Rover. Six cylinders had wider front brakes and servo assistance, so stopped pretty well. Sadly a lot of brake parts are absolute garbage and you will never get good braking. This is why folk claim they have rubbish brakes. Good quality cylinders and shoes/drums make all the difference.

200 tdi conversion is a brilliant move doneit to my 109. 1961. That and overdrive gets me 30 plus mpg. 35 on a Wales trip. Pull in studs for the hubs. And grease the nuts so they come off in future not wind more studs out. Turbo and intercooler not really necessary for conversion but I did mine anyway. I’m actually sure it would be 96.4^% as drivable without it It’s the torque that counts going up hills at 40 to 50 mph the turbo will hardly have kicked in.

Nice project. My recommendations if keeping & using regular, Drew Wright acoustic matting for the cab, roamerdrive overdrive (faireys are all overpriced & risky). Depending on mileage dont overlook a well sorted mildly tuned 2.25 or 2.5 petrol engine. I dont like N/A diesels with modern roads...

Right, it seems to have an original 2.25 Diesel engine which will be underpowered for this the heaviest of the series vehicles. However do not swap this engine for a 200 or 300 tdi...many will tell you that’s what you need to do...but do not do it! With a tdi you’ll also need a new rad/oil cooler and electric cooling fan, a new bespoke exhaust and then as the engine is over powered for the running gear you will want up rate the gearing and then the brakes. This all starts to lose the cars historic originality and that’s the best thing about this vehicle. A 2.5 normally aspirated older Defender engine is the best option for a slight but useful power upgrade and fitting an overdrive, if it hasn’t already got one, helps with the gearing. This is a useful, simple and sympathetic upgrades without changing much of the original vehicle. It’s a massive project but relative simple if you have the time and space...good luck.

Have a look at "Land Rover Sophie" she knows her stuff and does it with basic tools.

It looks like you have a Land Rover 2.5 diesel in it they are fairly bomb proof engines but very gutless. I have just swapped one of these for a Land Rover discovery 300tdi in my series makes a world of difference and parts are relatively cheap

Hi Nigel, glad you've found us! it depends what the surface is, how rusty it is, how fragile/ size etc.. I do use electrolysis all the time, sometimes sand blasting, sometimes rust removing solutions, it depends on the situation

I'm coming to the end of my 88" rebuild. Any advice, you ask? Take...lots...of...photos! As you dismantle, I mean. Oh, and make preps to sell a kidney. Most parts available, easily, but not often cheaply. My project has taken over my life and was a bucket list thing. I am already itching to do the next one. These things are ROCKETING in value, so you won't lose money, at least, if you come to sell it. Good luck, mate.

john Craddocks in Brigetown Cannock is good for spares.He used to have a Pink Panther not sure if he still has it. I remember them in The Middle East in the 60s.

Glad you said just Land Rover as when these were made they were distinguished by numbers denoting the wheelbase, people often call the Defenders which they are not, the Defender name was not used until the 90's

Series Land Rovers are pretty basic tech, as you have found, the steel bits rust....replace the chassis (they are generally galvanised) and either rebuild or buy a rebuilt bulkhead.....there is plenty of info on Land Rover forums, many have been rebuilt...there are also many parts suppliers, I wouldnt recommend Britpart parts though, unless the part number ends with a “G”....some parts will now be unavailable, but with your skills you’ get round it

Hi for the brief moment that I saw the engine It look like the original 2.25 land rover Diesel engine. If that being the case if it was me, I would keep the original one. If it needs a rebuild I would do it as it would far greater value to the vehicle. cheers Peter

If you're still looking for parts and advice on fixing your Land Rover check out the series For the Love of Cars. They restored a series 1 but you should be able to find a good parts supplier mentioned in that episode.

Hmmm. This is definitely a long slow chew :) Sigh ... always wanted a proper Land Rrover.

The chassis looked ok, except for the connectors that hold the body mounts, e.g, by front passenger seat, that one appeared rusted out. But are you sure the main frame (the rails) of the chassis is gone? Your observation is obviously better, but if you had at least a starting platform to cut things off and fab new parts, that might be cheaper / better in the long run. Otherwise, you gotta find a good chassis off a compatible model / year, and that might be harder. Harder in the sense that you may have to spend more $$$ to get good donor, and then you still don't know if it's: 1. Straight (no accidents or repairs) and 2. any more rust free (in the long run) than the one you're starting with. Not to mention the time involved in finding the donor and checking it out. Floor pans and such for the passenger compartment should be simple to find and relatively cheap. Brake conversions (to disc) should be around for that model (by now). To my mind, keeping as much of the original is more desirable than simply mixing and matching. I'm no expert though, I never finished my 1950 Chevy, though the guy I sold it to did finish it. =) I faced many of the same issues, only I don't weld (yet). I'm gonna watch your intro to welding videos next. Sounds like fun!

You may need to consider what mods and upgrades you might make as to many could mean it's not road tax exempt anymore and that's part of the pleasure of running old vehicles is not pay tax on something you may only use a few times a year.
