Charlie as a character represents emotional honesty, I think. I never expected such a silly, off-the-wall surrealist comedy to turn into such an emotionally intelligent finale.

I encorage you to go back... the themes were always there, just not as obvious as in the finale. and I think Charlie is an honest depiction of depresion against a world of toxic positivity

@@triccele I agree with you, if you watch the entire series together, the themes were always there. I also like the biting criticisms of capitalism, the incompetence of those in power, and the refusing to let go of the anger, and frustration you rightly deserve to feel at the state of the world, is the very thing that finally topples those systems, and frees him, for better, or worse. They're really talented.

Anyone who identified with Charlie at 16 might have been able to tell you it was coming, but it's nice to see other people eventually realizing that the Charlie the Unicorn stuff was more than just 'goofy randomness' The fact that Charlie stayed angry and that's what saved him is what inspired me to speak up against my abusive parents and tell them they couldn't treat me that way anymore. I worry that everyone who just looked at Charlie the Unicorn and saw nothing but surreal randomness are going to be people I'm going to have to fight to get them to see my personhood in the near future. It fills me with a grim dread I hope it's not as bad as my parents were

Unicorns are embodiments of hope and beauty. You know Charlie is the only real unicorn because anyone who still understands those things would never be happy with the world as it is.

His story has a lot of similarity to the plot of The Last Unicorn, actually. Both stories of the last, unhappy unicorn in the world leaving their forest and trying to figure out what happened to the others, eventually winning through the strength of their negative feelings.

I personally still take them because it honestly hurts to not take them I’m more easily angered and often have depressive meltdowns

Everyone is smiling cause everyone is dead Charlie frowns and accepts a dead world until the loop closes and his negativity banishes the demons that ruined the world, all simply because his dread was honest.

This is now my theme song. I cant explain how badly I needed a song that expressed that its okay for me to be pissed off. Oddly enough that makes me feel much less angry.

The truth is so well stated, there is no reason to belabor the point.

This song is fantastic, and was a real wake-up call for me. It made me realise how insidiously gaslighting works. When powerful people try to erase your feelings they are trying to destroy your most intrinsic form of autonomy. Feeling bad sucks, but often it’s an important emotion because it allows you to tell when you’re being abused. It’s necessary to not being passive and complacent in a terrible situation.

It’s all right, Charlie, your feelings are valid. You have every right to feel angry and sad and depressed.

I sing this all the time. love Charlie the unicorn. I still have my old hot topic hoodie back from when the first Charlie the unicorn was still new!!

this resonates with me so hard. as someone who's only available therapy is congnative behavioral therapy and is incompatible with it, this is what it feels like. that if I just smile all the problems will go away, but I psychically can't

Magic siphons work best when you think happy thoughts. People who aren't miserable cant be killed and taken by the chaos demons. Perfect allegory for toxic positivity.

They can be, it's just that miserable people are more fun for the chaos demons to mess with. Charlie's unwillingness to be complacent and happy is why they continued to have fun with him for so long, only getting bored by the time of the fourth episode.

After so many years, can't believe I watched the Finally now. Such a bitter sweet ending and a banger song to end this series!

I've been looking for a version of this song I can put it in my playlist without any dialogue at the start or end so this video was a life saver thank you

I love how this silly lol random animation from over a decade ago somehow managed to end with this absolute banger about depression and victim blaming.

Everyone is talking about the lyrics but this song is actually amazing purely musically

Ah yes. My abusive household the song. But seriously. This is literally my situation. My father is an undiagnosed narcissist. (Im not demonizing the disorder he 100% has NPD according to family members and medical professionals I have spoken to) who refuses to get treatment or change. He treats me horribly and has everyone in the family following and obeying him without question due to fear. My bio mother isnt married to him, so im not always there. "Everyone is smiling but youve got a frown" Is literally the truth for me. "Why should i smile as he tosses me around" Im the only one who sticks up for myself. Im now 17. By next year im blocking all of them and leaving for good.

I want you to know that this won't solve anything. I did the same thing, the moment I turned 18 I moved out and cut off all communication. They had bi-polar disorder and had caused me more pain than anyone else in my life. I had no bullies at school, my bullies were at home. I would dread the bus ride back home in the same way other kids dreaded the bus ride to school. When I moved out for college at last, I blocked them, deleted their number, I thought it was me taking charge, finally showing them I am an adult and I can throw the hurt back at them. I thought it would solve my problems, make the people in my life that hurt me 'pay' so to speak. I didn't do anything but make it worse. Hatred is a boomarang. Remember that the reason why it hurts so much is because he is your father. You know you are supposed to love him, and he you. The pain you feel is caused by the broken relationship, breaking it off completely is not the right call, especially not right away. Because I didn't realize that when I cut them off, they did it right back. They cut me out just like I cut them out. And it hurt. And right now you might be thinking 'so what, they hurt me I'll hurt them. I'm not looking for amends, I'm looking for revenge' well that is exactly what they are going to think and do it back to you, now you're back at square one and everyone is worse. And make no mistake, revenge is what you are looking for, not improvement. Your hurt and their hurt don't negate the other, they will suffer and you will suffer, nobody will actually feel better. You don't have to become friends with your family, your father overnight. In fact, in some situations if someone refuses to change it may be for the best to limit your interactions with them. Some people do refuse to change, but that doesn't mean people are incapable of it. I once thought my family incapable of it, but now I am talking to them after nearly 6 years of silence. Its possible, slow but possible if both people are ready to let go. And most of the time what happens is one purpose comes to make amends, but the other isn't ready, and by the time they are ready you are still hurt from their last rejection. Its sick but its the truth. Empathy. Above all else, remember the golden rule. Treat others at you would want to be treated, that whatever you do will be the universal standard of all interactions. I know the feeling of vindictiveness that you no doubt have, oh my gosh do I know it, you think it'll do something. It won't take you're hurt away. It'll just spread it around. Hatred is a coal that you throw at somebody hoping to burn them but it just burns you and them both instead. I won't tell you what to do, but I will tell you as someone who has already walked the path you have, it won't bring you happiness. Only reconciliation will do that. Seek it, while you still can. Because mark my words, one day the last chance will fade away and you'll be stuck with your pain forever.

That song is so deep and people that don't like the Klaus Shwab WEF moto "Soon YOU will own nothing and YOU will be happy" may identify as Charlie.(notice how in some episodes they took his stuff and his kidney!!!)And in the one episode they finally get tired of him and want to take his life away. You may interpret the quote "everyone is smiling" as "everyone doesn't notice,care or react" to all the bad things going on in the world.And there seems to be some appocalypse going on in the final wich to some people may be our coming futur if the people "keep on smiling" instead of caring like Charlie does.

Sounds great! Such a clean mashup of both the original and the reprise. Glad I can now listen to a longer version of Everybody Is Smiling on repeat. :)
