    Hello my lovelies, long time no SEE. I recorded this over a month ago, and I was halfway done with it when I went on my mental health break. But I hated that it was just sitting in my drafts for so long, so I decided to just finish it up! I've been feeling a lot better nowadays (although not completely 100% normal yet), so I'm gonna slowly start uploading videos again :) hope y'all didn't miss me too much!! The reason the Spanish isn't translated was actually a decision from Spielberg, he didn't want to make English the default language and discredit the importance of Spanish. It's an interesting choice and it is unfortunate that many don't understand important parts of the movie because of it, but I think it does highlight the role Spanish plays in Latino communities and the US in general

    This movie is 90% in English. The story and context is obvious enough that what they say in Spanish isn’t needed to be translated. Spielberg was right on this one.

  • @belmarshall9103

    @belmarshall9103

    This is totally untrue. Everything said in Spanish is either immediately restated in English afterwards, has enough context around it to make it make sense, or both. And 90% of the movie was English. Spielberg was 100% correct on this one, and it didn’t make the movie any less accessible to English audiences. My brother and dad both watched it knowing absolutely no Spanish except hola and adios and they understood it perfectly and loved it.

Ariana is spectacular (well deserved oscar win) basically everyone but Ansel impressed me. Also I believe they intentionally left out subtitles for the Spanish. First: in a joking way, Rita Moreno would be very insulted by you calling her role a cameo. In all seriousness, I loved how cathartic this was for her. This movie redeemed so many things from the original. Second: Steven Spielberg dod the impossible. He made me love West Side Story. While I still don’t like Tony and Maria as a couple, i enjoyed seeing the dynamics between the Jets and the Sharks in a more nuanced way. In the original, it just seemed like the Jets were just there to hate on the Sharks. In this version, I saw both sides were outcasts and because they could not go after the real Goliath they were angry at, they took it out on each other. Third: i do not watch the suite life of Zack and cosy a lot, but that “floss” song gets in my head almost daily. “Can’t eat a lentil without dental floss”. What is wrong with me? Fourth: Rachel nailed Maria. Her voice was fantastic.

Someone next to me at the time translated for me and I noticed with that, they did not repeat everything in English. Kind of related. I also heard they don’t pay the subtitles people enough so the subtitles people don’t put a lot of effort in it. That is why songs don’t have subtitles (sometimes) and other instances why. My point. It's a remake of the multi-awarded "Orfeu Negro" (1959), both adapted the stage play "Orfeu da Conceição" written by Vinicius de Moraes.

    Orpheus and Eurydice were the subjects of several of the very earliest operas, around 1600. Shakespeare's *Romeo & Juliet* was first written and published at about the same time.

    This is a very late comment, but better late than never. I really loved this movie, probably one of my favorites from last year (2021). I also really enjoy the original film for its own charm. But, this film just popped in all the right ways, like you said, the choreography, cinematography, editing, acting (for the most part), and of course how the music was adapted into this version. The orchestra POPPED big time. And I really appreciated how Spielberg and Tony Kushner (screenwriter) set this version apart from the original film or other stage versions of this musical, some of the small changes and developments made to the characters (like Chino, who was a non-character in the original) or plot, like how they introduced a gun into the story in a more organic way. So yeah, love this movie, and love your reaction as always. I hope you're doing better, Sophia, mental health breaks are always necessary. I feel it. I'm glad you're back.

    I was so excited to see this in my recommended videos! I purposefully rewatched the 1961 movie before going to see this one, and in comparison it's less intense and even light-hearted at times (the police presence is more understated, Tony was never in jail, he and Maria joke around in the bridal shop before "One Hand One Heart", the gangs aren't as openly aggressive at all times). Arguably, given the direction the story goes, this is an appropriate change. The main instance of this that I didn't like was the timing of "I Feel Pretty". I get that that's when it happens in the stage show and it's for dramatic irony that Maria's having these happy dreams while this horrible thing has happened, but...I dunno, I just like her having that chance to dream before it all goes wrong. As you say, it's good that they didn't just recreate the earlier film, and a lot of these sequences were really beautiful. That shot during "Maria" at 12:34! (and the fact that Tony wakes up a couple of other people before finding her window XD) I love the classic leads-singing-the-big-love-song-while-embracing, but Tony and Maria climbing all over the fire escape during "Tonight" and finally reaching each other as the song progresses is so visually interesting and creates a sort of mini-narrative within the song. The Jets playing with the gun really drives home how young they are and makes the fact that any of this is happening even sadder. "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love" is the scene for which I definitely prefer the newer version to the older one (which felt a little melodramatic to me). Mike Faist is SO good and desperate and heart-breaking as Riff - he knew just what would happen if Tony took the knife out : ( And Ariana DeBose 100% deserved her Best Supporting Actress Oscar - MVPs of the movie. Thank you for posting and have a great day!

    18:18 Yeah I tried that excuse once when I was arrested, the sergeant at the precinct didn't buy it... So do we need reminders that racism is bad, by way of popular media? I mean when I was 7 I told a girl she couldn't play with my friends and I because she was Hispanic and my dad tanned my Hyde for that sh@t. He told me "different does not mean bad or good, just different". From there I built my own understanding of what it meant to appreciate people for what they are and to stop looking for things that separate us. It informed my ability to make friends, understand social inequities in my town and in other places around the world, gave me a standard by which to judge and/or accept what kind of behavior I would tolerate from other people. I find it difficult to hate ANYBODY for any legitimate reason, much less where they come from or how their skin looks compared to mine. So why isn't the message sinking in? I would argue that the USA has just as many issues with racial profiling, prejudice and persecution as it did 60 years ago, when the first film was made. This film perhaps highlights how garish and violent these prejudices can become, especially with the modern and vibrant filming techniques it utilizes. But the message is more or less the same. Even the ending is more or less identical, with Maria surviving Tony but remaining in a world where people will continue to rip each other to pieces over their differences (a departure from the Romeo and Juliet narrative). So WHY was this film remade? For the reminder that things really haven't changed since the 60s, they just take different forms? That gang violence is still relevant and causes needless death? That we would rather kill the 'different' and the 'not us' than learn or feel for them as we do for ourselves? That structured and encouraged hate is a systemic cancer that we will never cure? Don't get me wrong, the film is beautifully shot, the actors are selling their parts like crazy and the choreography is full of kick and energy...but why not take it a step further? Have Tony live and take Maria away, maybe? Hold a giant middle finger to the established normality of how the two gangs behave and say "To hell with you people and your hatred, we're going to make our own, better life, away from all this"? We've had two people die already, the tragedy is present and the Shakespearean parallels are there, do we need a final death to drive the point home? Or maybe Maria is so torn with guilt and loss that she fulfills the last part of the story and takes her own life, essentially saying "I'd rather die than live in place so screwed-up with hate and vengeance that it took the man I love away from me"? I wish this film had challenged something beyond what was established by the first one, versus repackaging it in something shiny and modern. As enjoyable and fun as some parts of this movie are, the heavy handed message is still HEAVY. Take the same 100 million dollars, the same actors and the same writing team and come up with something unique...Spielberg has the chops for that, Kushner's treatment of 'Fences' shows he knows the territory of subject matter pretty well and virtually every actor in this kicks ass. I'd love to see that original piece of work, even if it flops. This one certainly didn't kill at the box office...so why not take a risk? I'm glad you took a mental health break Sophia. I hope it helped. If you ever want to hear my version of 'Maria' using 'Sophia', I'd be happy to share. 😁Good review!

    Perhaps they thought that remaking this movie when there's BLM, StopAsianHate, etc. happening rn, it would feel relevant and drive ppl to theaters. But I feel like a lot of the general population haven't watched the original to feel compelled to watch this. Movie musicals just don't break the box office anymore! Doesn't help that Ansel Elgort had his allegations too

    @@SophiaPhannn Oh I see the need for a movie LIKE this, certainly, but think of how cool it would have been if the producers or studio had Green-lit something wholly new and original? That's how we get films like Zootopia and Ratatouille and Monsters Ball and American History X and The Joy Luck Club, properties that either didn't exist or only existed as books/ideas before someone took a chance on them. I think the name alone generated some buzz, but Spielberg could put his name on virtually anything and it will get some attention. I hope that kind of experimental Cinema grows, but I know Covid hampered a great number of projects. Elgort's issues certainly make the sexual content in this film...a little uneasy to watch. But star crossed lovers gotta consummate, I guess. 🙄

    About the Spanish parts not being subtitled: I strongly disagree with Spielberg on this one. I'm Dutch and I watched the movie with Dutch subtitles. The English parts are subtitled, but the Spanish lines aren't, because of Spielberg's "creative choice" because English isn't the norm. I don't doubt his good intentions, but this has the opposite effect. It merely feels like nobody should care about what is being said in Spanish; English is the only language that seems to matter. I'm glad that Spielberg acknowledges that English isn't the default language, but this to me is just the silliest way to deal with it.

    I had the same issue while watching it with subtitles in my native language. English is translated and Spanish isn't. So basically it was a creative choice to treat those languages "equally" becouse there is no default langueage, but then translate only one. So is there a default after all or not? Becouse they clearly aren't treated equally.
