Technically Robert caused the war for not realizing Lyanna despised him and never wanted to be with him. Oh wait, he did actually realize that. He just couldn't bear the thought of her loving another man so in a drunken stupor he fabricated a lie that would change the seven kingdoms forever and send it into a massive period of instability.

I was always fascinated how Game of Thrones was all thrown into motion through the actions of a dead man. Although dead, Rhaegar was the most important character for the series and everything that happened in it could be traces back to Rhaegar. Just brilliant stuff

fleurgi Elia was the biggest victim of the war. First rhaeghar disrespects her by not crowning her the queen of love and beauty. Then he insults her house by eloping with lyanna. Then we find out that he anulled his marriage to lyanna,thus making lyanna queen instead of elia and making all of her children with rhaeghar bastards. There's also the fact elia ended up brutally murdered and raped(with her children killed as well) by a man rhaeghar knighted, due to a war rhaeghar started. As if to rub salt in the wound,we find out rhaeghar and lyanna named their son(jon) aegon,the same name as that of rhaeghar's first son with elia. Elia's entire story is basically rhaeghar finding new ways to shit on her

Rhaegar parallels Robb Stark in a way. They were both the sons of great men destined to inherit their mantles yet were undone essentially by marrying the wrong person and dragging hundreds of thousands of people down with them for their mistake.

Although I will say in Robb's defense he didn't start the war and he didn't intend on falling in love, plus his demands for peace were reasonable, it's just everyone around him ended up screwing him over. Rhaegar from the looks knew what he was doing, knew what it would cause, and did it anyway. I have more sympathy for Robb in this case.

An important part, if not the most important, of rhaegar's story is that he was a slightly weird/aloof child who suddenly was struck with a sort of divine inspiration to fulfill an ancient prophecy. His interest in the realm, his interest in history and knowledge, was not until he was inspired to pursue the prophecy. Before that, for all intents and purposes, he was a strange and unknowable child to almost everyone.

Great acting by the actor of Ned Stark at 1:05. Truly amazing. He EXACTLY displays the emotions of keeping a secret, knowing that what Robert was saying was not true. Ned Stark is the real GOAT of GOT.

A wise man whose an accomplished stage actor told me Sean Bean is a terrible actor but has a manly “presence”. He evidence was that Sean constantly does this downward stare to display “worry or concern” prior to his line. It’s endemic to him. It’s all he knows. I freaked out after watching his pathetic performance in GOT. That downward stare is all he is capable of ! He uses this weak acting in the Frankenstein chronicles as well.

I have never been so captivated by a character that had been talked about for 7 full seasons like I was with Rhaegar. Hearing everybody’s different views of him. It really helped paint a picture of him. His kindness, his braveness, and in the end, his selfishness. Elia Martel and her kids were butchered because of him and that is heartbreaking. Honestly, I really hope that we get a Robert’s Rebellion prequel.

Was he really kind? In the real world if a man leaves his sick wife for a younger prettier girl he's usually considered a douchebag and an asshole and the girl is considered a homewrecker. Not to mention that it is kind of implied (in the books) that he didn't really love Lyanna, he only married her to complete his interpretation of the prince that was promised prophecy, he believed that a line in the prophecy stated that the prince that was promised must have 3 children. The show kind of implies the same thing though because in the show we see Dayne try to kill Ned on sight on orders of Rhaegar- he didn't care about Lyanna or her family(after all he did ride out to fight her two remaining brothers in the battle of the trident), he only cared about her offspring. Lyanna isn't much better either - she literally finds out that her future father-in-law killed her brother and father brutally and still decides to marry into that family. Add that to the fact that she knew he was married to Elia and still decided to marry him, and this clearly shows that Lyanna didn't care about anyone's feelings but her own. LIke I said in the real world we would consider both of them to be the lowest of the low but in fiction, we see this as a tragic love story.

I forgot who said it, but “Love is the death of duty” goes for the whole show. How many characters died acting out of love? Rhaegar, Littlefinger, Jaime, Dany, Robb, Oberyn (for his sister) etc and it was Jon who finally decided to choose duty over love

Sansa Lemon Cake Stark Oh, lord. Despite your little crush on Robb the facts remain. Rhaegar- Leaves his wife and children to marry another woman. Allowed people to continuing to believe he kidnapped her and caused a war that an abhorrent amount of people died in. Plus her father and brother were burned alive by his father trying to get her back. Then saddling her newlywed brother with her kid to present as his bastard. Robb- Makes a vow to a man to marry his daughter for his help. Breaks his vow and married another woman. He got a lot of people killed. And he accomplished nothing in the end. He didn’t save his sisters and he didn’t avenge his father. He got his wife and unborn child killed. His mother. If Tywin and Roose hadn’t ended it with that dinner the North would have been entirely ruined. All in all, they broke their vows and got a lot of people killed. And all over a woman.

When you think about it, it just goes to show how gifted Robert was as a warrior. Rhaegar unhorsed Barristan Selmy, one of the finest knight Westeros has ever seen, and yet he was killed by Robert on the Trident. I wish we’ll get to see this part of the story in a TV show one day!

I believe Robert was used to walking in the mud and blood that the trident didn’t really affect his fighting style, while rhaegar may not have been as used to unstable footing. Just my assumption of course

its very clear rhaegar and lyanna were in love. But how selfish were they to elope knowing full well it would start a war where tens of thousands would die. Why did Lyanna stay put when her brother and father were brutally murdered for trying to bring her back? Hopefully George will explain. Otherwise I don't understand why anyone would admire these two.

TheUndyingCrystal that’s the only reason I can think of as to why Lyanna would stay after everything that happened. She must’ve bought into the prophecy. I also think Elia Martel was supportive of Rhaegar & his obsession of the prophecy, perhaps even permitting him to seek out the right woman (Lyanna) to assist him with fulfilling the prophecy, who knows?

@@adw6894 1. Technically she was his wife not his mistress as he did formally marry her though in secret. 2. Remember he died in the Battle of the Trident which was before the sack of King's landing. At the time of his death Ella and her children were in presumably one of the safest places in the realm the Red Keep of King's Landing. Also the plan was for the women and children to be sent to Dragonstone prior to the war reaching King's Landing. However, King Aerys decided to send only his queen and son to Dragonstone and refused to allow Ella and her children to leave. Don't get me wrong, Rheagar did not do right by Ella at all! But from his perspective i could understand how he could not foresee the horrible end that befell them.

The fact Oberyn was right all along... Beautiful and noble Rhaegar Targaryen left his wife and two children for a 16 year old girl.

@@Zaneoo7 @Zane Connolly Unfortunately book Oberyn only avenged Elia and Aegon. Rhaenys still remains unavenged. She was killed by Ser Amory Lorch, who found her hiding under Rhaegar's bed, hoping he would protect her, and so Lorch dragged her out from it and stabbed her fifty times. Roose Bolton eventually fed him to a bear at Harrenhal, but it wasn't out of vengeance for Rhaenys.

+First Last Well, we know that Littlefinger knows that it is a lie. The look he gives Sansa when she says Rhaegar kidnapped and raped Lyanna while they are in they crypts says it all. In fact, we know that LF started the lie as a young boy as saw how powerful lies were as it caused Brandon Stark and Rickon Stark to go to King's Landing--where the Mad King would kill them horribly. Then came Robert's Rebellion. All of it Littlefinger's fault.

You can really see the inspiration this story took from Hellen of Troy, the Greeks destroyed Troy because they were told she was raped and kidnapped (like Roberts rebellion) but she and Paris were actually in love.

I though rhaegar might have made a good king, but it's clear he was pretty selfish, didn't give a damn what his actions did to the realm.

The fact that Rhaegar draws parallels to the worst Targaryen kings already screams that he is not king material: -Aegon IV: cavorting with a nobleman's significant others and the kingdoms bled for it. -Aerys I: His obsession with books and prophecies. -Maegor the Cruel: His delusional sense of self superiority, of "I am the King, I can do whatever I like." -Aegon II: His cheating on his wife Elia.

It's so cool looking back at things and picking up things that you missed the first time. Like Sansa saying Rhaegar kidnapped and raped her aunt followed by Baelish's strange expression as though he _may_ have known more than he let on.

In the real world, Rhaegar and Lyanna would be seen as the lowest of the low but in fiction, we see them as a tragic love story. Any man that leaves his sick wife for a younger prettier wife would be destroyed by social media in the real world and Lyanna would be seen as a homewrecker.

In the books it’s theorized that Rhaegar only wanted Lyanna to birth the prince who was promised. A child with blood of the first men and the blood of valyria. He was apparently obsessed with prophecy and legend. He believed that he must have three children, but Elyia Martell couldn’t give him a third...

Actually I think he was trying to recreate the trio that conquered Westeros: Aegon and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. He already had Aegon and Rhaenys with Elia Martell but like you said, she couldn't have anymore kids, so he sought out a new wife to give him a second daughter, Visenya. I think he believed his son was the Prince that was Promised but to fulfill the prophecy, he'd have to grow up and marry his two sisters, just as Aegon I did, as that would be the only way to complete the three-headed dragon

Think about how things would be different certain GoT characters had managed to keep it in their pants, stayed faithful etc. I'm not advocating celibacy, by any measure, but thinking about the consequences of your actions before getting a room might help. I am sure some part of him wanted to betray the night's watch and live a long,happy life with ygritte,but in the end his duty won over his love for ygritte. If rhaeghar had been more like his son a lot of bloodshed could have been avoided

And yet, without Ned's example, how many people would have acted selfishly? If everyone acted purely out of narrow-minded self-interest, everyone would be screwing everyone else over, nobody would work together and they would all be easy prey for the White Walkers. People who are douchebags will always be douchebags, but if everyone was like that, when they need help, nothing would happen.

The more I learn the the more I think Rhaegar and Lyanna were scum bags. How many had to does just so they could be together.

I wouldn't say scumbags when you think about it in GoT's / medieval context. People are forced to marry people they don't care for or even hate just to make alliances. Here they loved each other and wanted to be together despite their family decisions, which is understandable. Could argue it was selfish for not thinking about the consequences but they were young. Kind of a Romeo Juliet scenario when you think about it.

like rhaegar didn’t have to love elia, but it was absolutely his fault she died. he could have set things up to have her protected but he didn’t, he just left her for dead without a thought.

He returned also for her sake. He didn't have any reason to return to fight Robert. He could have just moved with Lyanna to his ancestral palace and lived there, yet he returned for Elia's sake even after receiving an annulment.

It would be great to see the characters of young Ned, young Robert, young Jamie Lannister, young LIttlefinger, and Cat and Lyssa Tully, young Oberon, Elia Martell and others like Lord Commander Gerold Hightower, Ser Oswell Whent, and Ser Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy as well as Rhaegar and Lyanna. It is a great story

Characters like Tyrion, Jon, Jamie.... The Kingslayer had a phenomenal character arc before it went to shit. What a disappointment.

And that secret love lead to the birth of the character we know as jon snow. And that entire plot point got forgotten about, gg.

Little Finger is right, it all is Rhaegar Targaryen's fault, but it wasn't completely for nothing. After all, it was the son he had with Lyanna Stark who stopped the last insane Targaryen .

Eyerybody loves ned stark

Rheagar and Lyanna’s story gives me Helen of Troy vibes. Clearly that was the inspiration for GRRM. Rheagar and Lyanna were selfish and their forbidden love brought about the fall of the Targyrian dynasty and killed hundreds of thousands.

And season 8 just ruined everything and didnt explore so many amazing possibilities to make the show even more epic. Wish they spent an entire season of the Night King and wouldve loved to see them all fight together at Kings Landing. Wouldve been awesome to see everyone's reaction that Robert's rebellion was based on a lie and that Ned Stark was actually protecting his son this entire time, wouldve made him even more noble. Wouldve been cool to see how all the main characters react when they find out Jon is the true heir to the iron throne. Lot of folks in these comments talking like it was Rhaegar and Lyanna who set off the rebellion, and not whoever told the Starks that Lyanna had been kidnapped instead of running off of her own accord. Robert would've be plenty upset if she'd run off willingly, of course, but the Starks would likely have taken a very different view (and probably kept their heads in the process), and Robert wouldn't have gotten far on his own.

Nice editing and background music. Streamlined a tangled but important plot line with particular facts and character traits. Very helpful.

It's so cool watching game of thrones a second time and seeing how well the actors actually did at portraying that they knew more then what was being said. The look and smirk of little finger who clearly knew the truth, ned stark grimacing . Means more when you know the truth

Rhaegar fought bravely, Rhaegar fought nobly and Rhaegar died. This line is so good and basically tells you that how good someone may be, they can suddenly die.

The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. Kinda speaks to rheagars character, he didn’t like killing but he didn’t seem to mind other people killing each other for him. If you’re going to start a war at least fight in that war not wait until the last battle to show up with an army. He deserved a hammer to the chest whether it was for love or not.

Rhaegar didn't start the war, Robert and Aerys did. Years of pent-up frustration at the Mad King reached a boiling point and tipped over when Rhaegar and Lyanna eloped, giving Robert and his allies the perfect excuse (alongside the death of Ned's brother and father) to go to war.

​@@highlyopinionated5611 sorry, but it's a bullsh*t: he was the crown prince, the heir to the throne, so he should know that power comes from political alliances and stability with your vassals; so if you disrespect those alliances and your vassals's rights (by this move, Rhaegar insulted the rights in primis of House Martell, since he publicily humiliated and then cast aside their beloved princess Elia; House Baratheon, since Lyanna was betrothed to Robert; and in the end House Stark, since he took away Rickard Stark's daughter without his knowning and consent and ruin his alliance to the Baratheons), you'll have to face a rebellion.

I would love to see a prequel just based on Rhaegar. He sounds like such an intriguing character. And I know he ain’t got many fans in this comment section but he sounded like a decent guy. But problem is he chose love over family. I think if they ever did a prequel this is the most interesting story to do one.

Well a lot of people know he’s a decent guy. But even decent guys can do the stupidest things that hurt people. Like a decent guy can cheat or indirectly hurt another person. It’s never black and white. But the thing is that this situation could have been handle a lot differently. It wasn’t just Lyanna’s “kidnapping” that caused a riot it was the fact her brother died and her father died and then the king asked for Robert and Ed to die and so on and so forth. Maybe if Rhaegar had convinced his dad or overthrew his dad to then strike down Lyanna’s engagement to Robert and make her his second wife then things would’ve been okay. But the reality is that the only victims here are the men that died and Rhaegar’s wife and kids. That’s it. Not him. And definitely not Lyanna.

Seems to me that Rhaegar and Lyanna were an reinterpretation of Lancelot and Guinevere. Both loved each other, but because of their passions, members of the Round Table started to hate each other, King Arthur's authority was questionned to the point where he had no other choice but to make war to his best knight and loyal friend. Their love started a series of event that brought the end of the arthurian age. Both survived the downfall and both went seperately on a road of repentance for the remaining of their lifes at the price of their own selfish desires.

The whole war was a lie. The biggest question is, who started all the insane rumours that "Rhegar kidnapped Lyana". I'm thinking Robert because he couldn't handle the truth. The Starks went south and wound up being murdered by the Mad King and the rest is history. It is implied in the books (not sure if it was in the tv show) that Rhegar was getting sick of his father and his mad behaviour and was on the verge of overthrowing him, before Robert started the rebellion.

The editing and choice of dialogue is phenomenal… not to mention the use of Dr. Ford’s score! Game of Thrones will always be my no.1 show, despite everything after s6 ep10 ( A.K.A peakkk GoT). However, Westworld season 1 is also up there as the best I’ve ever seen and just like GoT, a lot of that was down to an amazing soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi. I can’t believe how good Westworld season 1 genuinely was, such a compelling story of the mind and reality itself. It definitely does NOT get its flowers.
