The reason Frank likes listening the jazz songs on the records instead of on the cds because the way they sound on the records is the way he remembers them.

No . It's because the record labels that were distributing JAZZ like Blue Note and Prestige used different techniques than you find on CDs. The CDs for Jazz are typically remastered and compressed so you're going to hear the Dynamic range of Brass seem higher than they naturally are. Sometimes the drum dynamics are washed out. THis is common sense in the world of Jazz collecting.

Nuri Abdi تاي طه In time you might understand but for older folks every little sound, not just the music sends them back to their younger days. I've experienced this When I hear old VHS & Cassette tapes being played cause that's what I grew up with. now days you can download stuff from a cloud & stream stuff & add things to your SD Card/computer, it's just not entirely the same

What makes this episode great is how it touches on several things. Throughout the whole episode, Frank won’t stop giving Ray crap about how he ruined his jazz record collection so Ray try’s to replace them with CDs which Frank hates. Even though everyone keeps telling Ray to let it go because Frank is clearly the one who cares more about his jazz records then his family, but no Ray has to prove he’s right. Then we get this moment where Frank is totally at peace as he listens to the record playing, showing it’s not just the music, but the nostalgia of when he was younger and listened to them after a hard day. This episode demonstrates how we reminisce about our happy memories and it’s better to let things go then wasting time and energy trying to prove a point, especially when your pain is their pleasure.

It's more of a generational thing than which is better. vinyl records were his day. just like there are people who miss cassette tape players & eventually people will miss compact discs. all the imperfections such as scratches & bumps & sound quality were part of the experience for him not just the music. I know when my dad played his old rock records & cassette tapes it definitely felt like I went back in time.

If you made a copy of the CD in WAV format - you would be able to have it forever and make as many exact copies as you want onto CD. You can’t say that about vinyl.

The ending is somewhat bittersweet. This whole scenario makes you wonder whether Frank would have been less miserable if he hadn't lost the comfort of his records all those years ago. Especially since it comes so near the end of the series.

I always felt it was the connection to the records themselves. Like it was Frank’s connection to life before the Korean War. Though it’s a running gag, it’s implied that frank has some form of ptsd and his jazz records reminded him Of a time before all of that.

As a musician I play four different instruments I grew up on vinyl when everybody was swapping from the CDs to MP3? I'll take my Hi-Fi stereo vinyl, there isn't really no sound like a HiFi stereo that's about 300 watts and you got a nice needle in a good set of speakers, I like that that was nice., no doubt vinyl has its own sound.

Chris Cordova Well, I like the fact that there's been resurgence of vinyl, analog synthesizers, DSD audio, etc. I wouldn't want to be confined to Apple imprisonment where there is no option but their option. So I like all the Hi-Res music push be Neal Young, Sony, and I like the fact that kids buy vinyl. That's a good thing to have more freedom of choice of format I want, not the one that Apple or commercials impose.

I actually have a Sony reel-to-reel, but I don't have it connected to anything. It needs new belts as it does not play at the proper speed. I just don't feel like investing in it because my favorite songs are not available in the format. My turntable sounds well more than good enough.
